Killzone 2

Has everyone here completely forgotten that the original Killzone was rubbish?

Why is there all this interest in, and optimism about its sequel?

It was shit!

:)

Well, some people liked it and even more people liked the PSP version.

I haven't played any of them.

Because - pre-rendered or not - the first video of Killzone 2 was a graphical and action-packed splurgefest.

I really liked the first and felt it was restricted by the limitations of the hardware, thus I'm interested by what they'd be capable of on the PS3.

Understood. But one of the hardware limitations, the dualshock's woeful suitability for FPS's, has not been resolved in the sixaxis: Deadspot hell and shit triggers.

And all that action button to jump over a 6" wall malarkey? Rubbish. They'd need to really revamp this game to make it fun. A facelift, which is all we have been exposed to (prerendered footage or not) won't save this game. In fact it's the last thing it needs; the original was visually stylish and individual, the 'look' isn't the problem.

Killzone 2 being a PS3 flagship title and coming off the back of such an average predecessor, does not bode well whether it is graphically amazing or not.

It's hard to see why people are confident about this game.

As valid as Shook's opinions are, I can't help but notice his avatar while I'm reading his insightful views and feel that he's somewhat biased.

Heh, no I'm not. I really wanted the first Killzone to be great but it just wasn't.

I don't care for videogame/console allegiance; Killzone simply has many superiors in its peer group.

I do think that the first Halo is probably the best FPS there is, but I'd love it if someone managed to beat it.

I bought Killzone for a fiver at morrisons last year, put it on, and thought it was quite good (Although I was dissapointed at the lack of coop). I remember hearing about it before its release and how it was supposedly a "Halo Killer" and I think that became the basis for many people's judgement. Obviously it's a pile of shit compared to Halo, but I think on its own, if it had never made those claims, it would've probably been viewed better.

Yes probably. I'm sure the developers didn't start that 'Halo Killing' rumour though. That Edge cover was what first caught my attention and the question mark that covered their back also put a lot of pressure on the game. A silly move, wherever it came from. Killzone felt to me like a game with its own agenda... Just not a very good one. The game I mean, not the agenda. It's interesting that Resistance: Fall Of Man, a leading PS3 title, a brilliant FPS and much more of a relation to Halo than Killzone ever was, has escaped such comparisons. Killzone 2 has its work cut out in bettering Resistance.

The comparison between K2 and H3 will be inevitable, and probably unfair (especially considering how honed and accomplished H3's multiplayer mode is). Aren't they both due for release later this year?

I think the reason Resistance (and also Gears of War, I guess) has managed to avoid the Halo comparisons is because Halo 3 hasn't been released yet, so anyone saying "not as good as Halo 3" etc will be replied with "well at least it's out". In which case, all FPSes released so far could be considered a "while we wait" sort of game.

So any FPS released around and after Halo 3's release will be the ones to recieve the Halo 3 comparisons. Is anyone going to still be playing Gears of War after Halo 3* has been released? Just a (badly written) thought.

*Assuming, for now, that Halo 3 turns out to be the game everyone is expecting

The beta bodes well, for the multiplayer at least. An online co-op mode would be the icing on the cake, intricate user-designed spartans the cherry on top. I really hope the campaign delivers.

Anyway what was the point?

Oh, that Killzone was lacking. Here's hoping for better things from its sequel then. Even if it ends up looking like it does in that now infamous video (which I'm guessing it won't?) it will be shit if they haven't worked on the mechanics.

When is it out?

Sony E3 invite hints at Killzone 2 unveiling

killzone2_invite_small.jpg

We love receiving mysterious packages at Joystiq HQ and are particularly enamored by the ones that don't violently explode upon their opening. The card pictured above matches the latter description, though it seems to indicate that demolition and destruction is nevertheless in our near future. The card glibly invites its recipient to attend a unique two and a half hour Sony event on the evening of July 10th, just as Min-E3 gets underway.

Unless Sony has taken a very interesting approach to promoting the next SingStar, the disagreeable fellow on the card implies that Killzone 2 will be the event's focus. Considering the event's length and the game's brief showing at GDC, a playable version of the anticipated shooter seems increasingly likely to appear. Once we finally see whether or not it lives up to the infamous 2005 prerendered trailer graphically, we can move on to more pertinent questions like, "Is it any fun?" We suspect we'll have an answer next month.

it better be good sony or you will look like 'tards... (again).

True. Ten minutes with Resistance is time enough to realise how much better the 360 pad is.

.::: That better be two and half hours of new stuff. Not the debacle of last year. Four tracks of an HD GT4; what bloody moron thought of that?

Though Halo 2 learned us that attending press will howl at anything holding a gun. Or two.

  • 2 weeks later...

My chums in the know say the demo is 'impressive' and implied 'better than heavenly sword'...

But that screengrab doesn't look too hot really does it. Lets see what the demo looks like (bearing in mind that shaky cam footage always looks better than direct feed :o )
