Killzone 2

By the way, I do think that the EG team are the best videogame writers out there. But they got it badly, tragically wrong on that occasion.

Lots of journalists, not just Eurogamer, were blown away by Sony's lies press conference, and the Microsoft conference that year was terrible by comparison. I thought Sony's show was really impressive myself. You could argue that the ongoing backlash against Sony dates partly from all of the promises they made back then, and their singular failure to live up to them.

I wonder if Sony look back on that press conference as a terrible mistake, or if they think their inflated claims and unachievable release date helped slow down the adoption of Xbox 360.

Why is their first screenshot right up against a featureless wall like that?

Either it's a little taster before they blow our socks off with something that does match up to the original trailer, or Sony are trying to lower our expectations. And given the fact that the special Killzone conference is for a select number of journalists, I'm inclined to think it's the latter. Having said that, the 1UP guys pointed out that CoD4 doesn't look too far removed from that prerendered trailer, so maybe Guerilla will pull it off after all.

People did claim in that infamous thread that the trailer was "better than Pixar" and we wouldn't see realtime graphics that good "for ten years". Gears of War and COD4 must be hallucinations then. :D

The KZ2 trailer still does look like GC movie.

Gears and COD4 are still nowhere near that quality.

Yes it's the first screen Sony have officially released. I would also like to take this chance to retract my statement about Killzone 2 single player looking better than Halo 3 single player. If the character models are anything to go buy then Halo is going to be a lot more detailed.

killzone-2-20070710042144618.jpg

halo-3-20070705005846973.jpg

but then Killzone 2 could be a while off yet. I mean in the first image of the Chief released, the one where he was standing against a wall, didn't have as detailed a character as the one above. There's always time for another level of polish.

Or there going to announce that the screenshot is from the next Killzone on PSP and blow us away with the PS3 game.

.::: It's still 'ouch'.

I completely agree with you.

Hmmm... I'm unsure. Could be a mixture of both. It certainly acted as a pretty good "spoiler", particularly their insistence that the machine would launch in Spring 2006.

Graphics wise Gears is there and animation wise Call of Duty 4 doesn't actually look that far off. Some of the troops movements are incredibly fluid.

Yeah, but movement animation has been good for a long time, its all about that facial animation, and the little detail of the hands moving, etc.

Even the recent vid of Heavenly Sword - as amazing as it is for in-game 'acting' - Killzone 2's vid was still leagues ahead in terms of render/animation quality.

The graphical comparison between Killzone 2 and Halo 3 is going to be one of those "internet explodes" moments whichever way it goes. The understood balance that has to exist between level of detail and the size/scale of the environments will be thrown out of the window as soon as the fanboys spot a few more polygons on either game. I'm far more interested in the scale and intensity of both games than how much bump-mapping is on Master Chief's arse.

Get with the times! It's all about normal/parallax mapping these days. Those buttcheeks should have real definition now

most of sony's problems date back to that E305 conference.

they wanted to spoil MS's launch party and they did. but they also fatally damaged their creditablity - by out and out lying.

their arrogance in feeding us any old crap though choose to - and thinking we would just lap it up - was outrageous - and its poetic that it has come back to haunt them.

I haven't played Motorstorm so could someone tell me if these in-game screenshots from the Motorstorm trailer in 2005 match the in-game graphics of the game which was released in 2006? The developers had a further year to work on it after the trailer was released, so i can only presume the graphics are EVEN BETTER!?

Thanks

It's made by Guerilla. I don't think there's any doubt it'll look good at some point.

As for how it'll play? . . Well, it's made by Guerilla.

If its better than Halo 3 or Halo or even Halo 2 I will be completely and utterly dumbfounded.

And Simmy...they come nowhere close

That wasn't in-game footage. Just like the Killzone 2 vid it was pre-rendered. It was made by a UK company called Realtime UK (http://www.realtimeuk.com/). They did a talk at Animex (at my old uni, Teesside) around that time and basically fessed up to it, along with there being pics from it on their slides.

What the final thing is like I don't know as I've not played it, but from the shots I've seen i'd say it's nothing like.
