Greek PS3 tragedy!

After speaking to retailers and Sony Hellas, it is official. Read below for the GamesIndustry.biz lowdown:

Greek gamers asked to pay 60 EUR more than rest of Europe

For some critics it's already over-priced, but retailers in Greece have raised the RRP of the PlayStation 3 to EUR 659 (GBP 442 / US $863).

Sony has previously stated that the PS3 will retail in the majority of European countries for EUR 599.

Online stores in Greece, including the official Sony Centre, are listing the 60GB console package at EUR 659.

Sony has already confirmed that the PlayStation 3 will retail at a higher price of EUR 629 in Ireland, due to the region being "traditionally more expensive than other territories."

The PlayStation 3 goes on sale in Europe on March 23, with around 30 titles due in the launch window.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was unavailable for comment at the time of press.

We may be a small market, yes. And maybe we won the European Cup by playing the most awful football imaginable. But this is too much. Sony Hellas got the green light to raise the price of the PS3 here in Greece, to a whooping EUR 659. As always, the retailers here did not object and they found it perfectly logical to go along, no questions asked!

Why all this? For no apparent reason. Maybe it's because we will only get 5000 PS3s? Maybe it's because Sony does not care to bleed us dry? Maybe its because we here in Greece are stupid? Maybe all these three and more. I would actually been writing an anti Sony/anti Greece manifesto if I were buying a PS3 at launch. :(

Sometimes is better to just live somewhere else. :D

Just don't buy one, perhaps?

Well, I won't. I wouldn't buy one even at the EUR 600 price. But it has nothing to do with me buying or not buying. It is just illogical to be treaded this way. Sony seems to just trying to make the extra buck wherever possible. It should enforce a pan european price and not play us like this!

And don't let me start on the retailers!

So retailers have raised the price? And not Sony?

Another Sony-bashing non-story!

Congratulations!

Retailers have raised the price because Sony Hellas sells them the PS3s more expensive than in other countries. Get it now?

Most Greeks already import most of their computer hardware from the US because of the hugely reduced price. I'm sure they'll find a way.

You'd be surprised to know that here in Greece we rarely buy with credit cards. We do not trust online transcations yet.

Some will buy it online, yes, but not the majority. Besides, our gamer demographics do not reach the 18+ certificate, therefore not many are allowed to have credit cards.

As far as Greek Tragedies go, this isn't exactly Homer.

Actually, Homer is in the Epic poetry. Sofoklis is in tragedy. :D And It is a tragedy if you are a gamer who wants to buy a PS3...

I am still waiting for an official explanation to this though.

Yeah, the ones I'm in touch with all seem to know someone (or know someone who knows someone) who lives in the US, and can just buy stuff there and send it over.

Not really, tragedies were about otherwise great people unable to overcome some underlying flaw they have; it only becomes a tragedy when you go ahead and buy a PS3 anyway.

At that point though I think it qualifies as a comedy too.

Yes. That is the meaning more or less. As a genre though, Homer is considered an epic poet and not a writer of tragedies.

I can't argue with that. :(

If this happened over here the forum would have erupted in fury (even more than usual) so lets have a bit of sympathy for our little Greek chums.

They have my sympathy anyway.

:D

Yeah, I didn't mean to quote the first bit. Sophocles > Homer anyway. They're both better than the PS3 mind you.

Sure and begorrah, don't we only have a grand old tradition of buying overpriced electrical goods. There'd only be uproar if we were to pay the same price as you english bastards.

And there's me thinking Greece had a proud history of social conscience and intelligence. Ho ho - what an idiot I am! Good job Sony's on the money.

The more intelligent a nation is the more able they are to see that the PS3 is worth far more than Sony are charging. It's only the stupid people who can't appreciate that and have to be charged less to encourage their idiotic minds to buy it.

I'm going to apply for a job at Sony PR.

Yeah you are right, I am thinking of giving them just 200 euros more just for them delivering hot stuff. Poor boys they need to feed their families.. Aww

The more intelligent a nation is the more able they are to see that the PS3 is worth a pile of crap. :)

Buy an Xbox360 instead.

I wonder what Plato would say if they presented him a PS3 with a EUR 650 price tag on it:

"This machine does not exist. It is an idea, that's why you are paying so much..."
