There's a specific sound every upgrade makes that you hear the moment you enter any room. If there's no upgrade in there anymore then the sound disappears.

I did not know this! It must be quite subtle, because I’ve never noticed it before.

Cue me immediately noticing the very obvious jingle later this morning. :D

I listened out for it in a room where I knew there were things I couldn't get to, but I didn't hear anything when I came through the door. If you get close to the upgrade, like an additional missiles pick-up, it makes a specific noise, but there's no jingle when you first open the door. That I could hear, anyway.

I made the mistake in Dread and Samus Returns of backtracking for upgrades too early and then getting frustrated when there were still places I couldn't get to, so I think I'm going to wait until I've got all my equipment before I start mop-up mission.

This is one of the last of the 2D-to-3D franchise shifts and probably the most unique in the long haul. I’ve said before that Other M did an amazing job translating the core feel of a 2D Metroid in to 3D, but this is like Ocarina of Time or Mario 64 in retaining the spirit while completely overhauling the actual gameplay.

Agreed, and with this one it felt important also that it ran smoothly at 60fps, it’s paramount and just wouldn’t have worked on earlier hardware. It really was the perfect synergy.

The GBA games got me to upgrade to the Expansion Pass, and Goldeneye, and reminded me of that beautiful window where nobody had quite decided how a first person game should control. Love me some Doom controls.

How did this get an EDGE 9 when IMMORTAL got a 10? But who cares right?

Does this unlock a hard mode when normal is completed (I think this is based on the trilogy code)?

I was one of those who sadly originally gave up on the very last boss due to the silly long jumping section after each death.

Edge would give this a 10 these days. Same for Resi 4 and a host of other games. Prime came out in that period where an Edge 10 basically meant you were reinventing the wheel and revolutionising games forever whereas now it just means a game is really bloody excellent.

I’m loving this so far. My Metroid Prime story isn’t as exciting as most of yours I’m afraid. I bought it on UK launch, and to my shame never finished it. Got stuck on a boss somewhere and then gave up when something else came out. Looking at the UK release dates it was probably Wind Waker but I can’t be sure.

I then bought the Trilogy on Wii when it came out, never took it out of the box and sold it 3 years later for the same I’d paid for it. Not finishing it is one of my biggest gaming regrets (although these days I’m less bothered about abandoning stuff) and I’m on record here saying I would insta-buy a Switch release, so this is perfect for me. I’m a better gamer than I was 20 years ago (I can play Dark Souls games now) so I’m hoping I can finally do this justice.

Someone should make a touching JR Hartley / Werther’s originals advert out of my story.

Thinking back, this arrived the day of my biology exam and also when we got kicked out of student halls for Easter so they could be used for conference accommodation or whatever. So I got up to the plant boss, and then packed up, and then spent all Easter break playing it. And then playing it again on Hard. And then I got surround sound and it came out again for a demo of that and got cleared again. I think I rinsed it to 100% on normal and hard mode, and cleared it another 3-6 times on normal over the next couple of years just as a nice way to spend a week’s gaming.

Am I buying this again? I think I’m buying this again.

I didn't get this on launch, as I didn't yet own a GameCube. I'd end up getting Wind Waker several months before picking up the console, but that's another matter.

I remember playing this on a tiny CRT perched on a chest of drawers in the tiny bedroom I shared with my girlfriend, tinier console sat in all its resplendent cubeness just beside it, later to perch on top of an enormous Xbox. That is also another matter.

It was a wonderful game. Then I loved Echoes, and have owned Corruption for a decade and not once loaded it. So Metroid Prime still represents that time in my life when I'd buy a game and actually play it rather than feel like I've added another item on my to do list.

Not gonna happen with this one.

I remember buying the game and loving it until I got stuck early on. Then it was shit obviously. I decided to give it another go with the help of the walkthrough book that came with an issue of Games TM. That’s how my Metroid fandom started. The GameCube was such an underrated console.

OoT is due a remaster surely

That came out on 3DS:

I’ve just reached Magmoor. The way the classic Metroid ‘fire level’ music gradually kicks in is very rewarding. Total banger.

Remember how the big response to Samus Returns convinced Nintendo to go big on Metroid Dread? Big hopes for the resources getting put in to finishing Metroid Prime 4 given the huge enthusiasm for this.
