Have a smaller, focussed world. Amp up the hostility and loneliness, make it feel real. Keep the soap opera to a minimum. As few friendly characters as possible.

Yeah, it's all about the solitude. The only friendly characters should be long dead, or holograms.

Ideally from a race whose idea of a laugh is genetically manipulating a young human girl to the point she can contort her body into a sphere the size of her own helmet.

I've found that this gives you far fewer pointers of where to go next compared with modern games in the genre. Even in something like Metroid Dread, I had a good inkling of where to go after getting an upgrade and which areas I now had access to, whereas here the critical path is far less obvious.

Finished this tonight. 80% completion rate and took about 11 and a half hours.

Literally the best time I've had gaming for a good while. Loved every second (again). I hope they do Metroid Prime 2 soon :)

Dread was pretty much linear though. Blocked paths etc usually meant in most cases you just had to go forwards.

That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy Dread, after a few false first starts and initially hating the EMMI, I loved it.

Absolutely, i think I'm over half way through and I've made zero decisions about where to go, it's actively stopped me when I've tried to explore so I gave up bothering quite quickly.

Fun twist in Metroid Prime 4, Samus got middle aged and it turns out the suit was doing most of the work lately.

Isn't that the plot of...

Dread seemed to abandon the exploration of metroid games. You typically complete one section and get a power up, and then there's a transporter to take you to the next bit. For this reason I really hope Dread is not a template for future metroid.

You guys should have returned your defective copies of Dread as mine seemed to come full of exploration. More so than either Zero Mission or Fusion!

This game is the absolute bomb, I love switching between different beams, transforming into the morph ball, zooming about, double jumping, and basically laying down the law.

There is always somewhere to go, some hidden upgrade to find, and you never feel like you’re being harassed to go and do something else. You are always left free to explore. The reason this works is because everything is so tightly designed, and the map system is brilliant, you can be anywhere you want to go quickly and with ease, there’s no fat at all.

I like GMTK. Don't necessarily agree with him, but he's got an interesting niche and it encourages me to think deeper about why a game is good.

Are we talking "awful takes and opinions" about things outside of game design?

No, nothing like that. Purely the content within the videos.

It’s possible for someone to provide a cogent analysis of a game and reach an opinion you disagree with. If you need every insight to agree with your personal outlook you’re gonna have a bad time with much beyond a superficial take.

Speaking of hot takes, apparently this doesn’t credit the original developers, there’s just a screen saying thanks to the developers of the original and the Wii port. When will developers realise they need to unionise?

I'll never forget when I first played this in the Summer of 2003. Rented a copy with my best mate, spent all night trying to get as far as possible before the rental period of 24 hours expired.

Literally couldn't sleep because images of the Hive Mecha, Incinerator Drone and (mostly) Flaahgra kept me awake, even in my mind when trying to catch some sleep.

Then came the fiery drums of Magmoor, the gentle ambient tunes of Phendrana and - most notably - the haunting siren of Space Pirates AND Metroids ambushing me in the dark in Hydra Lab after the power cut.
Very powerful and the stuff of nightmares for 14-year old me

This one still sends me shivers:

So yeah, I got here again last night. Specifically 'saved this moment' for when it was later at night. Handheld mode, headphones on and in we went.

What a thrilling experience yet again. Sneaking in at first, ensure I grab/scan as much as possible so to never have to return.

Reaching the centre, grabbing the heat visor and then carefully dashing back to the daylight as SP's and Metroid are all over me.

It was easier than I remembered, though 20 added years of gaming experience may have helped and I found using a Wave Beam charge and missile takes care of every pirate with relative ease (the charge stuns them).

Completely forgot Metroid are gone after one Super Missile which also helps.

Still, so grateful for reliving one of my most vivid (gaming) memories from my teenage years.

Observing someone's opinion, judging that it's bullshit then ignoring it and getting it straight to fuck and no longer giving it any attention is something that more people should be doing.

I’ve only ever watched a little bit of Game Makers Toolkit. I found it very, very dry in that he dissects the games on an anatomical level without really saying how they make you actually feel. Even so I did find it quite interesting from a design standpoint, if not much else.

What did he criticise about Metroid Prime? (I know I should watch the video but tbh I’d rather just have it summed up and spend more time playing the game itself).

I don’t think that mouthing off about how much you hate someone’s takes as soon as they’re mentioned is ignoring them.

Feel free to join him in the bin.

GMTK does have a lot of interesting content, but he's from a game critic background and does the thing where he observes something and doubles-down on it seemingly without thinking why it's been implemented that way. It's such an obvious critic thing of thinking you caught a "flaw" and are going to skew and spin things to present it and get a nice wee pat on the back. His Elden Ring video is absolutely maddening and the final straw for me, so I just don't watch the videos any more, just like I don't read Alex W's posts.

What ‘flaws’ does he observe in Prime, then?
