He developed and released an iOS game after (or possibly during) his Pocket Gamer stint and before starting GMTK, iirc.

On top of that, I suppose, he had also played about with things in the past. At least according to his Developing series.

Wait… hold on… does this GMTK person not like Metroid Prime?

I believe Mark had some mild criticisms of the game, but this being the internet, things got out of hand quite quickly while discussing it.

At the risk of sounding like a stuck record - my goodness this game is good, isn’t it. You can tell when a game’s got its hooks into you. My measure? I’m finding the time to play it during weekday evenings. There isn’t usually time to play games in the evenings. But for Metroid Prime? I can find it.

I booted up the Trilogy version of this earlier and did the opening section. I actually don’t mind the Wiimote as a pointer at all. Never have.

I also had a quick go on Journey to the Savage Planet.

For about four hours.

What a great game to fill the wait until my physical copy of Remaster arrives. Thanks for the recommendation everyone.

Another nice touch for this remaster which I don’t think I’ve seen mentioned yet is HD rumble. It’s pretty subtle for the most part which I like, you don’t feel it for every shot or movement, it’s used more sparingly and effectively; the nice metallic clank as Samus lands after a jump, or the jet propulsion of the space jump. My favourite thought has to be the super missile which feels like one of Boba Fett’s seismic charges as it kind of spreads outward. But it’s never used too abrasively, it always feels like the sounds and motions it’s depicting.

HD Rumble is criminally underused in many switch games. Granted, 1,2 Switch was pretty bad but it gave you a great taste of what it could do and they never really went anywhere with it beyond a few first party games. I’m not sure if it’s as good as dual sense rumble now but the sliding ice cubes around the joycon thing in 1,2 switch was pretty amazing.

And into the Phazon Mines.

It's odd I don't recall there being quite so much across the map back tracking after upgrades - which whilst they open new doors don't often make a real shortcut - but also I'm tearing through it.
Memory must really help a lot. (Were the scanned "XXXX detected in Room Y" in the original or a Trilogy addition? I don't recall them)

Finding weapon switching (X+dpad) and super missils (R1 + R2 or A + R2) trickier than I'd like in combat

Yes I keep messing both of these up too. I really miss being able to switch guns with the C stick. Although not enough to switch to classic controls, admittedly.

I can't remember what the button mapping was like on the GameCube but I'm finding some of the choices a bit weird here. Like, why is jump B when you're on foot but X when using morph ball. Took me ages to realise jump wasn't hidden behind an upgrade.

Definitely in the original. I *think* that the game tried to detect if you were lost and offer those tips.

Have we all just leveled up as gamers or is the dual stick control scheme just that good? Because this is definitely easier than on the GC and even Wii. Am about to face the Omega Pirate and I’ve only died once. Once! WTF?

They better be remaking Echoes as we speak. That game kicked my ass back in the day but with this new-found confidence I’ve become more than willing to venture into the Dark World again.

Anyway, this really is just straight-up one of the best games, isn’t it? And despite being 20 years old, it still feels fresh, original and exciting when compared to the current gaming landscape, somehow.

I had been clamoring for a simple HD re-release of the Wii Trilogy but I’m happy they went down the remaster route. The series deserves it.

I’m finding the pointer controls to be even easier still! The dual sticks works well, although the famously stubby Switch sticks can be a bit imprecise at times. But this is nitpicking - the fact that we’ve got not one, not two but three control methods to choose from is just brilliant.

With this and Goldeneye, it’s a great time for classic console first person shooters. Time to grab Turok? :D

OK, I’ve no intention of joining the boxless wanker brigade for a first party release so where’s the best/cheapest place people are using to get a physical copy when it’s out over here?

Hit. Used to be Base, I think.

Despite different button placement on the Switch, I keep hitting Y when wanting to fire a missile, causing Samus to go in morph ball mode at the worst of moments

Bit annoyed you can only swap Y and X functionality on the Classic control scheme, which feels a lot less fluid to me for this remaster.

IIRC Retro were working on a complete trilogy remake but the other two games were put on ice when they were drafted in to do Metroid Prime 4. If that does well I can see Nintendo sending them back down the Phazon mines to finish the trilogy for Switch 2. (I’m assuming an MP4 port is a sure thing as a launch title.)

I’ve just got the gravity suit and I’ve died once (seeing if I could make it through the lava without the grapple hook in Chozo Ruins ).

I think it is easier, but I’ve heard they did tweak the difficulty in the Wii version.

Spoiler

Also, the trek from Phendrana Drifts to the ice beam to the frigate dead end, back to Phendrana Drifts once again to get the gravity suit and then back to the frigate was an absolute mission. Desperately needed an elevator to Phendrana hidden with the ice beam, just outside the frigate entrance.

There is an option to swap visor/weapon switching in control settings. I changed it when I got to Phazon mines (wish I had done it sooner). So much easier swapping weapons with just the d-pad. Visors I don’t feel need to be swapped as quickly so doing them with x+dpad isn’t as bad.

Haha I’d completely forgotten you could jump in the morph ball state. I’ve just been using the bombs!

What I do like though is that jump is also on L1 so you can jump and keep directional control with the right stick.

You fucking what????

I’ve been using bombs too, specifically the triple bomb trick, to get to higher places.

I was thinking it should be that way around but didn’t even consider checking, brilliant advice and should be the default option tbh.

Those first few games that got an Edge 10 always had a special kind of “feel” associated to them that’s hard to define. It’s a unique and rare sensation, constantly being quite conscious of the fact that you‘re playing somethinf genuinely special.

The strange thing is that replaying Prime now evokes that same kind of feeling, whilst the game didn’t really do that for me in 2002 (it also didn’t get a 10 of course). Maybe it’s because in hindsight it truly was a unique title that has never really been replicated, let alone bettered in what it does.

I agree (but I also felt that at the time). There is definitely something about the game that seems to transcend the genre and becomes very special. I do personally believe a lot of it has to do with the fact the game works very hard to make you believe you are actually wearing a spacesuit. Obviously the eyes reflecting, and rain has been discussed already, but other touches like the way samus will move her hand when you change beam fire modes, so her fingers aren't caught and other stuff like that.

I think it's the pacing of it too tbh. It's amazing exploring the world but you're never far away from finding a new item and the item collection jingle(?) Is just impeccable. Proper serotonin hit every time.

Yeah, it makes everything so joyous. That sound when you turn into the morph ball, the ‘wananananah’ when you get an upgrade, it’s all so perfect. Along with the soundtrack I can’t think of a game that has better sound design.

Addicted to this absolute banger too:
