It is such an amazing game. I replayed it last year on the wiiu using the wiimote controls and it was as brilliant as ever. Still looks incredible too. I'd love to try it with VR.

I thought I'd check out how this'd look running over 480i RGB on a PVM and it looks absolutely incredible. So good that I couldn't put it down and involuntarily started another full play through despite having loads of new top-drawer RPGs for the Switch.

 

I'll try not to go too John Linneman, but the motion resolution here is a sight to behold. As it's not the fastest moving game it feels like it's running much smoother than 60Hz with the way the CRT is scanning every other frame into view, rather than flashing/flickering it as a flat panel would. I've been doing most of my PC gaming at 144Hz for the past five years now, and this doesn't look/feel that far removed. On the other hand F-Zero GX absolutely would benefit from 120Hz and higher.

 

Coupled with the insane levels of geometry on show, even by 2022 standards, the whole graphical presentation is utterly spellbinding. This is the zenith of 480 resolution gaming, alongside the likes of Gran Turismo 4 and Super Mario Galaxy 2 - after twenty years it's hard to argue that graphics actually needed to get any better than this. Genuinely, this is both technically and artistically the best looking game I've played since Cyberpunk 2077. There's not one spot of grey area anywhere.

 

Why did we ever move away from CRTs in the first place?  Higher resolutions do not automatically equate to a higher definition.

I think there's a gap in the market for Sony to dedicate a low-blur TV range to the PS5's performance mode. Sony Performance 55, etc.

 

Because most PS5 games can handle 1440/120 (else 1440/90), and that's a great foundation for the rolling scan from their current PVMs without flicker. They've got the tech on both sides!

Had a quick go of this and dual stick + gyro is wonderful. Classic feels like a relic! Thankfully the dual stick controls don’t feel like a regular FPS, and it still has that platformer feel to it.

 

Torn between casual/normal difficulties though, and I notice you can’t change mid-game. Found the bosses a bit frustrating in the original game, although the game was fine. I don’t want the game to be a cakewalk, but I don’t want to have my enthusiasm zapped every time I reach a boss. Gah!

I can actually make out details on the space pirates now!! So much better.

 

I’ve settled on dual sticks with gyro as it has a lock on as well. The game is designed around the lock, so that makes sense.

Can you still subtly see Samus' own face reflected back at you within the visor sometimes? That was one of the coolest effects in the original.

Ah, that makes more sense if it also has a lock-on, the game is very much designed around it. Any time people talk about Prime with Wiimote or Dual-Stick controls, I just think of that first wasp-factory boss and go "Hmmm".

Looking at that comparison video in the Direct thread, I'd forgotten how the level of quality and polish that pervades the game is apparent as soon as the game loads. Something about the marriage of mysterious visuals and audio in the introduction means you just know it's going to be special.

I do. I also don’t trust Nintendo not to shutter the eshop at some point so I won’t be able to download it in the future on a replacement Switch.
