Fallout 3 - Official Thread

The ending really is rubbish, isn't it? (Or at least, the two variants I just tried were.)

Ah, you know what? I like the lead up to the ending and as soon as you're given the choice, I kind of got a bit emotional at that point as I knew what had to be done. The ending wasn't really a surprise but I really did feel like good about myself

choosing to make the sacrifice

.

And I suppose the other ending isn't too bad either <_<

Should be, I've just closed my app down and reopened it via the link and it worked.

I do love how all the Ink Spots songs sound the same, so the playlist sounds like it starts with the same track as the Official Soundtrack.

Speaking of the Ink Spots - over the christmas break Sky showed a Simpsons Treehouse of horror that I'd not seen before - anyway, it ended with kang and kodos looking out over a destroyed springfield, the camera slowly panning out and "I don't want to set the world on fire" on the soundtrack. very redolent of the original fallout 3 trailer. the show was dated 2006, so possibly was inspiration for bethseda...

I think that song was supposed to appear in the first Fallout but Black Isle had trouble with licensing issues.

I couldn't believe it when I read the DLC was 360 only.

Is that a timed exclusivity or will it never see the light of day for PS3?

At least when I finally get the game it'll keep me busy enough as is.

No mention of it ever coming for PS3 but no stated denial for it either. The 360/PC DLC is set from now uptil March so if it ever does come out, it won't be for a while. They went to the effort of announcing it at E3 last year so even if its timed, it'll be a significant amount probably.

Oblivion never appealed to me, I'm sure it's a great game but the Fantasy setting just doesn't float my boat. Whereas Fallout 3 is just <_< It's the game I waited years for, the setting, the atmosphere.

It's currently my game of this generation by a long shot. Ocarina of Time was the last one that absorbed me as much as Fallout 3, it's just a pity it's taken 10 years for something else to come along. Roll on the DLC.

Oh yeah, what the hell was that all about?

It's not even an online game!?! <_<

People felt that with a game as large as Oblivion, with so many things to discuss, that it needed it's own folder and sub-folders set up in 'Discussion'. Everyone who played Oblivion agreed it was needed, everyone who didn't said no, so the bizarre compromise was to set up it up in the Online folder where this sort of folder structure is allowed.

I haven't had a chance to apply the patch yet but apparently Bethesda has also added shaders present in the PS3 version to the 360, meaning that everything is a fair bit shinier now. Anyone notice this?

I haven't played it in a while. I'll update today and check.

The gamma levels appear to have been reset back to their original positions post patch (had to change them again as I find the game looks a little too dark on default). It's hard to tell if there is much of a change because I believe the differences (outside of lack of AA and framerate) were supposed to be relatively minor between the 360 and PS3. It might be my eyes, but the faces of Ghouls seem to look slightly different now.

On the PC version the grass and plants look a lot nicer than on the 360. How's that in the PS3 version?

I'm playing the 360 version, though I intend to move over to PC later in the year when I upgrade. I'd imagine the mod scene by then will be rife with graphical updates, balance changes and new quests (if it isn't already). : )

I've read people say that it's an ugly game. While I agree that the textures can be decidely low resolution at times, the animations stiff and the NPCs still a little too inbred, I honestly think that environmentally Fallout 3 is one of the best looking games I've played on the 360. There's real warmth to the lighting, the image quality is super sharp, the draw distance is outstanding, the LoD changes aren't in your face, there's always plenty of geometry on the screne and the art style is drop dead gorgeous.

While I think the gameplay mechanics have been narrowed down and distilled from Oblivion in a way that GTAIV didn't quite manage from San Andreas, my main concern with Fallout 3 before release was that the technology might not hold up. I had all sorts of problems with Oblivion (quest lines failing, numerous crashes, stutters, weird graphical glitches, NPCs disappearing, music looping, you name it). Thankfully it feels a lot more solid in terms of design choices and tech.

A bit of a dry post but Astilius pretty much summed up my emotional reaction to the game. I've rarely felt exploration be so rewarding.

There's only one theme in the shop at a time, to stop you from buying two at once. To change the theme, talk to Moira about them, choose one, then trade with her and you'll see it. Personally I prefer the science theme, but that's just because my character is a massive speccy nerd.

Ah, that wasn't totally apparent. Heh.

So, if I were to buy another theme later on, surely I should still be able to keep my current one as it is an inventory 'item'?

I'd have thought you could just switch them on and off at will.

Or at least trade themes back with her for an even price.

Also, what is a verti doing in alaska?

I thought they never made it past the prototype stage?

Speaking of Quest faults, I got one involving Paradise Falls:

Basically, it's the mission given to you to capture slaves by the slavers. I caught one of them (Mr McSnipes in the minefield) so I could get access to the place. After a bit of piddling about the place I thought 'I'll be a hero!' and blasted the shit out of everyone. Now I've got a slave collar taking up 1lb of my precious inventory and I can't get rid. Any tips? I can live with it, it just irks me a bit.

I just read somewhere that you

can get a dog

- what the fuck?? I finished the game without even a hint of that. By not paying Moriarty to tell me about my dad I think I must have missed out on a huge story arc. I went for doing all Moira's quests first (and exploring stuff I came across enroute) and then followed the main story doing a few quests I came across on the way - in hindsight that was a mistake as I reached the end very quickly and seemed to miss loads of stuff. Boo!

While talking about this game at work today I was asked to describe what direction I taking my character. I said I was going for a balance between Science, Medicine, Repair & Small Arms with my skill points & perks & I had to lol when he then said:

"So you're a smartarse with an Assault Rifle?" :D:lol:

I can't get that description out of my head now & wish that "Smartarse with Assault Rifle" actually appeared as my Rank on the Status Screen.

Can you guys sum up your characters in an equally succinct way?
