Fallout 3 - Official Thread

One of the major criticisms I have of the game is that it's too easy to course-correct. The amount of books, bobbleheads and stat improvements offsets a lot of the initial impact of following a certain path in leveling up your character. When they allow you another ten levels, Bethesda are also in real danger of gimping this even more if they enable you to continue to spend skill points on all your other attributes. I'm kind of hoping they'll make it so you can't. Another problem I have with the game is the acting. I don't think their writing is terrible, but I wish they'd stop spending (what you must presume is a significant percentage) on 'Hollywood' voice talent no one gives a damn about and do a Rockstar and screen voice actors who can a ) give better performances and b ) change their voices convicingly. Better voicework would have helped fight the awful animation, because as things stand, the storylines in Bethesda's games are usually like watching a school play in terms of movement, drama and engagement.

In the end though, this doesn't really harm Fallout 3 in a significant way. The reason why? Well, it's because the game has a inverted focus where it's all about you, what you choose to explore and where you end up on a tangent.

I haven't really read through the thread but why on Earth can't I download the Operation Anchorage expansion for the PC?

You can, but it's a hell of a slog to get it and Games For Windows Live makes you jump through a good six different hoops before you can pay for it and download it. Begin your epic journey by actually clicking on the bit that says 'No New Content' when you're logged into Live and on the Downloads section of the menu.

I get onto GFW Live Marketplace but when I select the dlc it says 'Error a problem has occurred with this request'

I came across a little abandoned shack. Inside it was very neat and tidy but its occupants seemed to be well departed (some notes were left which mentioned escaping to a vault). Weirdly they were keeping rad roaches in cages. What for, experiments, pets? After searching the apartment a bit more I realised most of the ammo was locked away, perhaps they had children around or something, there was a teddy bear on the bed. I felt a bit sad in that old shack and rather than kill those roaches dead as I normally would have done without even thinking, I let them out, shut the shack door behind me and continued my trek out onto the wasteland.

FFFFFUUUUU moment, I keep forgetting to put 25 into my explosives so I can't defuse the Megaton bomb. Need to level up again now, and I want somewhere to keep my stuff!

I had the same problem. There's a helmet you can get from one of the raiders in Springfield Elementary which ups your explosives. That did the trick for me.

Why the Daily Mail actually has a chance of getting 18 rated games banned right there.

I thought that '18' on the box meant 18 months :)

Anyway, I finished the Nuka Cola challenge (which was excellent as I needed to clear out loads of enemy territory to obtain the bottles due to drinking most of the regular store supplies earlier on) and that means all the quests are done now, except

Taking It Back

. I think I'll try to get those last couple of achievements (only terminal hacks, weapons smith, behemoth death and speech challenges left (although I'm not sure if there are even enough speech oppertunities out there)). And 10 bobbleheads too.

I haven't played this since I went into tenpenny towers and failed at one of the speech things then got auto-saved and I hadn't done a manual save for an hour.

Is it possible to complete that quest peacefully once failing one of the speechies?

Yes, I think there is.

Apparantly there is some literature dotted around the Tenpenny Towers which contains letters you can use to blackmail certain people with

. I haven't tried it myself, but read it in the guide. I suppose you can find it on the Fallout Wiki as well.

I pulled back the wizards curtain last night (ooh err)

Continuing the main quest after having spent ages doing my own thing I decided upon visiting Rivet City. It was late and I was a bit tired so I just ran about having fun - planting lives grenades on people (for which I unlocked an achievement) and basically being a murderer. So imagine my disappointment when instead of dying some doctor type character was just left 'unconscious'. Now, I'm pretty high class with a rifle and I'm used to motherfuckers not only dying, but exploding in showers of gibs and gore. It's put me off the game a bit to be honest. There hasn't been any other occasion where someone has failed to die on me up until now. My freedom suddenly feels, less free.

I thought I could do what I wanted?

The doctor you mention is main story line important and just like with oblivion they can only be knocked unconcious, so that if you do what you were doing you can still finish the game.

Hmm, so after doing my stuff at Oasis, I scouted out the Bomb Storage Facility.

Encountered an odd bug where either the game would freeze once I'd entered another room which required loading (I think due to something with my NPCs), or if I quickly about faced and went back before they spawned it would just give me a black screen.

Ducked back an hour to Oasis again, seems to have worked.

Annoying, but it's the first significant fuck up I've seen in 85 hours.

Scientific pursuits.

Has become quite the burden.

Initially the achievement did not drop because:

I had been to rivet city and met Dr.Li before going to GNR plaza and meeting 3 dog.

So while I am waiting for the (now delayed level cap increase) I thought i would redo it.

I went back to an earlier save, pre rivet city. Went to GNR, did the big fight, met 3 dog, did his quest, picked up charon and the lincoln repeater en route, went back to 3 dog, went to rivet city, met Dr. Li.

One of the dialogue options said - "I've already been to project purity"

Oh, crap, thinks I.

So I plough on, as I'm almost there, go to the arlington memorial, or whatever its called, find the tape, go to vault 112, get in the lounger, Quest completed Scientific Pursuits, no achievement.

I look back to the original start point, my pre rivet city save, and its outside the arlington memorial, after being in there and looking around.

So now I think i need to go back to an even earlier pre arlinton save and do all that again.

This may test my love of this game to breaking point.

But if i dont do it now i doubt i ever will.
