How many missiles did it give you. I only got 1 when I killed one, and I find it hard to believe that the Super Mutant only had 1 missile left.

3 I think.. although shooting out its missle launcher backfired, as it was totally knackered and practically unrepairable

Not so far as I can glean from the plonker UI. If someone has 100 caps, you can sell them up to 100 caps worth of stuff. After that you're giving it away, though it doesn't make this clear at first. Considering the amount of handholding toward the start, I'd appreciate being told I'm about to give a few hundred caps worth of loot away for free (even if it is blindingly obvious once you notice!)

They've changed the barter system?

In the old ones you'd be able to give them a gun worth, say, 500 caps, and if they only had 100 you could just take them.

So in this one you actually wouldn't be physically able to sell the gun at all?

That's a bit poo.

.::: It's not buying/selling, it's bartering! Though I suspect the team might have overestimated available knowledge on the previous installments.

You're not giving it away for free: if you go over their cap limit just 'buy stuff' from them and it'll keep the correct values in the background. It'll only give you caps to a certain maximum if you don't trade it for other stuff. Caps are pseudo-money, it's all about swapping items.

So if I'm selling 500 caps worth of stuff to them anf they only have 300 caps, I can then take 200 caps of stuff for free off them? Cool. :)

.::: Bingo!

As said, it's been in since the original, but they really should've explained it a bit.

Thanks for the tip, think I might start again and see if it makes a difference.

Feedback on the combat? I'm interested in this but after watching some videos online, the combat looks really weak - why not just shoot for the head/weak spot the whole time or am I over simplifying it?

A little, the targeting system can only be used a certain number of times before it needs to be recharged. So far I'm liking it, finding it preferable to Oblivion. The death animations might start getting monotonous.

I'm only a few hours in, is everyone as annoying as the population of Megaton seems to be? I usually play as a good character but I'm finding it hard to resist the temptation to nuke them out of existence.

It's on Steam for $49.99, anywhere cheaper?

Well, as you can tell from my previous posts I'm in the minority of people who aren't impressed by it. However, the combat is easily the weakest part. The standard first person control is totally neutered and clinical, and the VATS system really doesn't seem to have any point to it. You're not strategically lining up sequences of attacks/items/heals, just shooting. Bear in mind that (at least at first) more than half your shots miss, and you're only ever aiming for the weak spot (which always seems to be the head or face). Plus, the end result is usually a comically bad, jarringly immature dismemberment, with the models coming apart at specific points of articulation, like action figures. I guess it's meant to be funny, but it just looks amateurish.

It's not bad actually, the real time combat starts off rather crappy but gets much better once you've levelled up a bit. Also, the grenades are bloody awesome in VATS mode.

The megaton inhabitants really are annoying and deserved everything they got in my game, the other settlements seem much less so, even the rich right wing types at tenpenny towers (although there seems to be a lack of quests there).

.::: I think that's how the setting is 'corrupting' you. Normally, I'm the good guy in RPGs when given the choice, but in this I've been both good and an absolute bastard. I'm as happy-go-lucky as can be in this game-world.

And I like it...

So I've cleared my backlog and I'm ready to delve into this properly. And seeing as a lot of you guys have either completed it or are very far through - can I safely be a sneaky thief for the whole game? Or do I need to get good with weapons/ have a tonne of hp?

Once I came out of the vault I set off in a random direction and came across dogmeat almost immediately. I shot him at first but then reloaded when I saw his name.

He's not very good at fighting giant mutant scorpions.

I got the PC version for cheapness' sake and was surprised to see that it's GFWLive-aware (so I can get achievements). Of course, there's no hope in hell of it being able to connect. Piece of shit.

Dogmeat, find me some ammo! Good boy, Dogmeat!

:)

Also dear God it never rains but it pours. Making my way to the first metro station so that I could make my way over to Galaxy News Radio, I started being shot at from across the river by some raiders with assault rifles. I sniped them until I ran out, then used the hunting rifle to finish off the surviving raider. Anyway, I crossed so as to harvest their ammo and suchlike, and a second group of raiders appeared before I reached the corpses of the first lot. These ones were chasing a poor doomed wastelander, who got mown down very quickly leaving me to fight them alone. Managed to fight them off, using up many stimpaks, nuka-colas, and most of my stash of purified water (so many grenades coming my way...). Finally, I thought, a lull. Went to loot the bodies of those raiders who first shot at me, and I start getting shot at again, from across the river (pretty much exactly where I started off). This time it's a super mutant squad with miniguns. I hid behind a bin and picked them off with the hunting rifle but I didn't dare go over to nab myself a minigun. Christ, I'd probably have been in yet another battle before I knew what hit me.

VATS really is just the big brother to the combat in the original fallout games except for the fact that you can target individual body parts. If anything though, the fact that you can freeaim after using up your action points is fantastic.

Um, you could target individual body parts in the old Fallout games. Complete with amusing flavour text when you inevitably ran around shooting everyone in the crotch.

Christ I wasted so much time trying to

escort Cherry, (the whore from Dakov's place) to Rivot City. I didn't know how to get there so ended up walking to all the wrong places, the amount of times she got shot and I had to re-load. Anyway finally made it an hour later, oo what could my reward be from a dirty whore.. she didn't even suck me off! All I got was some good karma.

(Small side quest)

Real sweet moment happened to me as I stumbled across a waster and his hound, above me on a hill.

Killed the waster and the dog ran at me. I backed up a little to let some more action points regen then, as it jumped, hit the RB and targetted its head, one shot.

The slowmo kicked in, the camera switched to the profile shot with me and the leaping mutt in the frame, and its head exploded. The momentum carried the headless body on and it cartwheeeled right over me, skidding to a halt about 15 feet down the hill.

I WISH all games had the halo-esque replay..

So I bought the CE edition looked at the lovely artwork and then switched the game on...

How come the lovely artwork in the book looks absolutely nothing like the game? How come the game looks just like Oblivion with its washed out browns and greys? The combat is dull as fuck.

Am I missing something?

People were complaining about the combat in Fable 2 but at least the combat in that game is fun!

Blowing someone's head off with a crit - in slow mo - with gore a plenty? Not fun?

If only it had been released by Microsoft eh?

Actually it isn't that much fun simply because it is not a nice looking game.

It's got Oblivion's horrible looking weird humans. They look like hey have a plastic sheen on them.

I'm only a few hours in so will crak on with it.

.::: If you don't like Oblivion you really shouldn't have even looked at this.

And it's post-apocalyptic. Let that sink in for a moment.

For me, there's nothing quite like shooting someone in the FACE as they come towards you, seeing their head tear off, and watching their corpse ragdoll to the floor.

Also those bug things - attacking them unarmed is great. STAMP. DEAD.
