You need the perk to use the Pre-war books right?

Also difficulty in this is a complete mess. There seems to be no "way" to find out how tricky an enemy will be before you fight it (And see what damage you do).

There is. If you highlight an enemy in VATS and pick some attack points, the damage it will do on their health flashes. You can do this from a distance/sneaking before engaging.

.::: I think people are expecting WoW colours or an actual number, but that's absent here.

Then again, you could also throw the difficulty down and enjoy.

Does the silenced pistol let you kill stuff stealthily without being noticed, or what?

I've got one, just haven't used it yet.

I've not used it myself either, but I think it would let you kill an enemy without others nearby (in audible range) detecting you. Keeping your sneak bonus possible then?

I'm enjoying it so far. Only an hour or so in mind you.. just wasted the guys at the Super Douper Mart. The first time I tried something was there attacking a raider ... it came after me with something that fired blue lines ... first shot crippled my leg, second vapourised me. Seems a little unfair to let me meet something like that on my first foray out of Megaton. Fortunately it wasn't there when I loaded my save and tried again.

Hmm. Given this another shot and I retract some of my more negative comments, although it's frustrating as fuck with its invisible walls where you should be able to climb around the rubble.

It's not bad, seriously lacking the lovely atmosphere of Oblivion though, although maybe I should just get Oblivion.

Question:

How big is this game? I'm concerned that every quest (be it main or side) is an Achievement.

Given there's also been a couple of other achievements, that seems to suggest the content of the game is extremely limited, compared to Oblivion.

Is this an accurate guess?

In seven hours of play this has crashed on me twice. I take it this is normal?

Nope. Try loading 3 different games to clear the sysytem cache before you play it again.

In 6 hours of play I managed to get around 40 achievement points, so out of a 1000 thats not bad.

After looking through the strategy guide there aren't actually a huge amount of quests (28) but what quests there are (Main, side and freeform) and pretty big. How many have you done? The only small ones I've done so far are Moria's and they're all listed under the one entry in the strategy guide.

Um...pass. I'm up to Scientific Pursuit in the main quest, and have done a couple of the others.

Also - Bobbleheads give some IMPRESSIVE bonuses. I've only found 3 so far (no guide). Given the size/style of the world, I think anyone would struggle to get them all without a guide.

There are quite a few small tasks which don't count as quests (like delivering the naughty nighty or whatever) but would have been listed as quests in, say, Oblivion.

Also regarding finding stuff in the gameworld, I noticed that at Level 20 there's a perk called Explorer. Which reveals every single location in the game world. Would be rather helpful for finding stuff, I bet.

Three different games? Saves?

Just to clarify further for Lorf - he means actual games, e.g. play a game of Fable 2, Rock Band and Soul Calibur IV before trying Fallout 3 again, so your 360 loses its cache of it.

If that fails you could always try completely wiping the cache (check google for the how), but hopefully that shouldn't be needed.

Ah bugger, I'm absolutely detesting this. From the amount of dialogue that goes on and on,best example of this so far is Three Dog or whatever his name is - just say "get me a satelite dish and I'll tell you where your dad is" rather than him essentially saying the same thing over and over, and I don't want to skip it in case he says something important (chance would be a fine thing)

The biggest thing I hate is getting around, not only does it take too long, the level design is horrible, being forced to always take underground paths is a real kick in the teeth - I thought it was an open world game. And all that rubble that falls neatly between two buildings, how convenient.

An amalgamation of these things I hate is Three Dog explaining how to get to the museum, go out the back, through and out the underground, then into through and out another underground system and then walk the rest of the way to the museum.

Hold guide button > Shut down console.

I so wanted to like this.

funnily enough, i felt the exact same way as this last night. everythign you said holds merit. So i decided to have another go this morning at 9am. I decided not to plough straight on with the story and pissed around in Megaton. 12 solid hours later. I'm in the "this is surely game of the year" camp. It's amazing.

as for everyone else -

Who's done the oasis questline and how awesome is it? the tree dude is awesome.

.::: Ehr... It's not that far, the stuff near the monument is quite fun and I believe you can just fast travel back to GNR once you've installed the dish.

But yes, the dialogue has some weird 'motivations' at time. Moriarty I could understand, but the mechanic breaks completely when Three Dog uses it. His personality doesn't fit. Personally, it feels like Blood Ties was written by the same guy who did The Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion, but that might just be my imagination. In general the characters work, but Three Dog is really an exception imo.

I was also annoyed that the West kid had a voice that was 20 years over the age his looks implied...
