Fallout 3 - Official Thread

The much maligned Radiant AI sem-works in this, I've noticed, especially in Rivet City. Folk having an old natter about stuff I just did, like telling the priest Diego was shagging that other girl.

It's kind of strange though that the the quest journal is crapper than Oblivion's very detailed journal, especially in that there are mini-tasks which aren't proper quests, and are only listed in your notes and are easy to forget about. Things like the bloke in Rivet City who wants me to find evidence on his rival. There seem to be a few things like this, whereas the fully fleshed out quests seem fewer than in Oblivion, but larger in general. Although I just got an achievement for completely skipping a quest -

The blade runner-esque one, some woman gave me a part to enable me to lie about it, only got 50 fecking caps for doing that, and the woman has disappeared

It's odd, I enjoy this, even though it's a wee bit... boring? I'd probably have a lot more fun playing Dead Space, need to borrow it off a mate.

In a back room of the station there is a manhole cover you can open, I think it is marked on the map, but you know how unclear THAT is. Yeah, that bit is hard to find.

Ive got that far, gone through there, all the traps and everything. But there is no one there.

You've probably taken a wrong turning somewhere in the underground bit - I did that and ended up back outside at a railyard. From what I remember it's along one of the curved side bits, where you should come to an area where a guy who is guarding a door challenges you.

Once you get used to the way the arrow always leads you to the next door you have to go through it works better, but that is a really confusing quest for so early.

Well I've invested about 15 hours in this so far and I.. I don't know if I've really enjoyed myself yet. There's a lot to like but my general impression after 15 hours is "is that it?" :( It's literally Oblivion, but less epic feelin'. No way I'm giving up on this bad boy yet though.

20 hours I've stuck into this, upto the second from last chapter and been loving every second of it. Although, anything located in the inner D.C area tested my patience at times, since anything is only accessible via the subway tunnels.

I've built up a decent amount of good karma, but have been setting about

enslaving people using the Mesmatron, best 'weapon' ever! :(

Hmm I ended up not finding that out as I got to a point where the lock pick skill/computer skill required was too high for me to continue. Is it worth going back in then? As it WAS bloody scary.

.::: It's not that essential, just made it 'fit in'. A small touch that was kind of nice. :(

The best way to get to the family is to follow the burning oil drums.

I HATED the end of that quest, the massive shootout in the underground station. About 8 bad guys to kill, nowhere to hide on the approach once they see you... I got raped at least 30 times. It took me over an hour and a half of dying and reloading to get past, and in the end I just spammed all the stats modifiers I had in one go!

Oh, and that manhole cover surrounded by radiation-filled barrels (I didn't even inspect it because of that, and was tearing my hair out wondering where the fuck the map marker was leading me) was a terrible piece of design.

:(

I simply talked to everybody,

they turned out to be very friendly, gave me access to a new shop and a nice new perk

. Or are you not talking about the quest where you have to deliver that letter? If you are, why did they start shooting you? Or why did you start shooting them?

I loved the opening hour or so of this, and my first trek from the Vault to Megaton was great. The place is so damn dreary though! :(

It's both very like Oblivion and somewhat harder. I've already run into a gang of guys who attacked me that I could barely scratch. The "dungeons" seem more unique and actually laid out rather than random generated. It's also a bit less "directed".

I've spoken to both the Sherrif and the guy in the bar at Megaton and am not sure what to do!

If I destroy the place, I assume that means the quests I can get from Megaton residents end prematurely? I quite like the crazy woman who wants me to research stuff.

Is there anywhere I can buy nice clothes? :( My woman wants a hot dress like the prostitute in the saloon wears, but is finding killing her unseen pretty tricky.

But but if you talk to the drug dealers living there about the Family they tell you to go into that manhole :(

Yeah it's damned dreary after the wonders of Oblivion, but I guess this is something to get used to. As a game though, I can't help but think that the setting just doesn't lend itself very well to an FPS-RPG. So far I've been reminded very much of Hellgate: London which I'm sure isn't such a great thing. I know the world of Fallout is meant to be frickin' depressing but man, it hardly invokes joy when playing and I feel like it should.

I think my main gripe so far is that the feeling of potential 'n adventure just isn't there like in Oblivion. The world is full of invisible walls and barriers, and it's made the experience feel quite limited so far. Either way, I think this is a grower and not a shower, and I'm sure it'll have its hooks in me soon enough once I start deviating more from the beaten path. It is good for reals!

Brilliant game, nice graphics, atmosphere etc etc.

The mission with "The Family",

does the lad ever emerge from his meditation session or do you have to fight the vampires in order to see him?

There are tons of options:

you can hack your way in there, you can get the password from one of the ladies with the lady killer perk, you can convince the guy to let you in if your speech skill is high enough, or you can find the password somewhere safely locked away if your lockpick skill is up to it. There might be other ways, but those are the ones I managed to find.

I've found Fallout pretty open so far, actually. I've meant to be finding info about my dad from the Saloon owner, but I've already got at least four other things I could be investigating or getting on with. The only problem is it's hard to work out which ones I can actually manage to do at the moment. After Oblivion being piss easy, this is kind of disorientating! I could try and find the leaks in the Megaton pipes and fix them, but I don't have a high enough engineering score, for example.

And when I went to the supermarket for the research lady, I find killing the people there a real struggle at first. But was that because I was only level 2, or my weapons being rubbish, or me not using the combat system properly? I didn't have any of these problems with Oblivion!

I'm liking the plot more than Oblivion too. Already some good mysteries about whether or not I was really

born in the Vault

, etc.

Oh, and do you need to worry too much about what skills you picked at the start?

Plus, one more question, do the stats like Strength, Endurance etc stay pretty much the same throughout, except from Perk bonusses? It's only your skills that actually increase with each level, right?

Still my main memory of this at the moment is killing that old whore who wouldn't sleep with me.

Somehow I also found a minigun and fatboy early on. All very good.

From my experience in finishing the first two games and half way through this, I'd suggest tagging small guns and repair so you can repair your own weapons easily and you have a good aim quickly. The third whatever you want. Pick a high intelligence for lots of ability points. Don't make your strength high unless you're a melee character. Your main stats only change through perks and the odd bonus from a quest so choose carefully.

My small guns is at 100 now at level 10 and I can basically hunting rifle kill a Super Mutant with two head shots from pretty far away with no reply.

I chose the perk that lets you up a stat by one point six times because that's a pretty huge bonus in Fallout terms.
