The old Man Utd Thread

So if Ben Foster goes back to you guys do you reckon he'll get a game? Van de Sar is getting on a bit but is still quality. From an England fan point of view I'd love to see Ben Foster get regular games at one of the big clubs as he looks quality.

Also from and England point of view I'd love to see Michael Owen go to you guys in the summer as was mooted in the papers at the weekend. A club partnership with Rooney can only help England. Then replace Ronaldo with Joe Cole or Lennon at International level and we may have almost got Man Utd's potent attck.

Any chance of either happening do you think?

Yep, Im sure Foster will get some games if he comes back next season. VDS is getting on a bit now and though he is Quality, we need to start thinking of a replacement. The Michael Owen thing is quite intriguing. One the one hand, I'd love to see him form a partnership with Rooney and if he's fully fit and ready the goals should come flying in. But on the other hand, he's a liability with all these injuries he consistently picks up. I don't want to see us splashing out on him and then getting no returns.

though I think it's been proven this season that we lack not in firepower.

I honestly think we've had a freak season with Ronaldo on such amazing form. We can't rely on him repeating it again next season we need someone we can fall back on, tapping goals in left, right and center... Torres would be an amazing signing - he's got speed, height and the ability to put the ball in the net, but he loves Atlético so a move could be questionable. I think we need a tall striker that can nod it in every now and again...

We need an adequate replacement for Giggs. He's been great this season but he is getting on and while Park is a decent squad player, he's technically far beneath Giggs. And don't even mention Richardson.

Imo we should hang on to Heinze, not sure if he's still slated to leave or not. Richardson should go, as should Silvestre. Maybe we should be looking at a right back...Neville is also getting ona bit and neither O'Shea nor Brown really convince me in that position, and they certainly don't put in the crosses that Neville can.

I think it will be a scramble for David Villa this summer. Did anyone see his goal against Sevilla on saturday? Fantastic composure.

Just an idea like, but what do you think to maybe Evra playing left midfield? He's got the pace and the crossing ability. And it would also mean Heinze could keep his position. I think our defence can remain the same for another season then changes will have to be made. However our midfield and attack need to be altered for next season IMO.

I always got the feeling that Carrick may have been slated to take over from Scholes, and Hargreaves from Keane, I could never really see any other justification fro signing both. Seeing how Carrick is playing recently it would be interesting to see how he would play in a more advanced role.

As for a striker, if they don't go for one of Europe's big guns then it wouldn't surprise me if they tried to get Tevez on the cheap. He's a good strong player and would (hopefully) perform far better with the players we have. I did mention Owen to the mrs but I can't imagine him leaving them after they've supported him for a season, you'd have to be Anelka a right cunt to do that.

I did consider Evra at left wing and Heinze at left back. Could be worth a go certainly.

What's going on with Rossi, anyone know? He's been down as the next big thing for a couple of years now but I'm wondering if it's ever going to happen for him or not. I know he used to bang them in for the reserves but his first team opportunities have been limited to say the least. How has his loan been going?

Re Hargreaves, I think many people speculated that Carrick was there to eventually replace Scholes and Hargreaves to replace Keane. Certainly Carrick has proved recently that he can finish well and his passing ability isn't really in doubt. If we do sign Hargreaves I would imagine him playing the majority of games in a holding role and Scholes or Carrick being used as the more attacking central midfielder. It might actually mean Carrick playing a lesser role next season than he has this season.

I don't understand the thing with Gareth Bale. Many are suggesting this left-back will come in the summer to become Giggsy's long-term replacement :(

Rossi has been doing really well for Parma, scoring goals and playing well. I'd like to see him back at OT next season, for extra cover to our strikers. I'm sure he'd get a good few games if things were going well.

I think Hargreaves would be a great signing, he could do the kind of job that Makelele and Essien do for Chelsea, that holding midfield role and allow scholes and carrick to go forward with less worry about what's behind them. And as we've seen these last few games, when Carrick gets forward he can really put them away.

First off Utd fans care so little for England, pretty much Ronaldo's one and only song revolves around him dicking England ;)

Plus you're forgetting the real star this season has been Scholes, though Ronaldo has been sublime...so you won't be replicating the attack really.

Personally I've had enough off Saha and his glass legs, hiring Owen would make dear Louis look like Gary Speed or something for league appearance consistency.

Then again Utd fans need fear not as the move won't happen. Utd showed zero interest when he went to Toon nearly two seasons ago- why would

he know seeing as all he's done in the meantime is sit on the sidelines?

So you're playing with 12 men, or dropping a defender, or Giggs/Ronaldo, or Rooney or our new £25 million pound striker (that won't ever materialize anyway?).

Like I said I don't see the point in Hargreaves and Carrick...neither are remotely good enough to fill Scholes shoes or are attack minded enough. Carrick can pick a pass as good as any, but he's not as influential as Scholes. Sure Carrick has scored of late, but then again so did Keane.

Just kind of depressing they're going to spend in excess of £30M and have two players not even close to the level of Keane or Scholes. Ideally it would have been Scholes and Hargreaves, with the Carrick money spent on a proper Scholes replacement. Alas, nope.

No, I'd be dropping a striker and playing with Rooney alone up front. With Scholes and Carrick being able to get foward more, they'd both chip in with a fair amount of goals and we all know what Ronaldo and Giggs can do in terms of scoring.

If you actually watch Scholes play he actually sits really deep, often deeper than Carrick, and makes good clever passes and maybe then gets forward. He's really not a conventional attacking midfielder. I think Carrick could do Scholes job quite well, with Hargreaves sitting behind him tackling the crap out of everyone behind.

I vividly remember jumping clear over the settee, (I was having to watch the game from behind it!) landing, and ripping my shirt off.

some night that was eh.

I remember running into the landing and diving onto my knees (rock and roll style) whilst shaking my fists like I was holding an electric guitar.

Indeed what a night!
