The old Man Utd Thread

"I think SAF has messed it up. So what he's won all these honours but thats in the past. We United fans live for the present and today confirmed to us that yet again SAF has failed in the transfer market. This means that the money we have put into the club has been wasted. Without people like us MUFC would not have any money to spend.

SAF is a disgrace, and the tactics and selection are a shambles. SAF has passed his sell-by-date and needs to go and go now. He's starting to get like Big Ron and we all know what happened to him."

A quote from the bbc website. Sigh.

Anyway, first game of the season a bit disappointing but there's a lot of promise in the side. We should of scored - but give it a couple of games, a load more training sessions and we'll be finishing. We still managed to get through Reading all match, we just couldn't get the ball in the net. I think there's more positives from this game than negatives, so I'm not to worried.

Rooney being out could fuck things up a bit (especially my ff team), but hopefully Tevez will prove himself.

Maybe the foot-breaking incident was karma for that pathetic dive he made to try and win a penalty earlier in the game.

I'll expect Gerrard to receive an axe to the head next game, you know, as fairness for tripping over a non tackle and talking the ref into it. Just like he did to Sheff Utd last season.

Then again, what I'd really expect is fuck all to be said as he's English, and only foreigners dive.

Still, I'm ecstatic. Starting the season with one fit striker and selling two really was a majestic decision. After never replacing Ruud.

Best of all, Pompey away mid week and we have no one up front. Lets stick the big Irish fella up front! That'll be great.

I don't understand why Fergie didn't put Scholes as a striker. Scholes seemed very reluctant to bomb forward and it was up to Carrick to get forward. He also should have put Anderson or Tevez on the bench.

Also anyone notice Saha has kept getting injured since he signed a new contract last December. It was like he was playing for a new contract.

Yeah, I'm sure he loves watching every game from the bench instead of being out there scoring goals.

Yet he shouldn't be immune to criticism.

He's fucked up massively this summer in my eyes. He's sold two strikers which have angered me greatly, and is reliant on two players coming back to save the season. He's said we're covered and nobody will be bought. Then again, it's sort of gone unnoticed that when Heinze goes half of the £50M spent this summer will have been reclaimed.

Except Saha has played 69 games in 4 seasons... it's just not good enough and I'm sick to death of him. Irregardless of his quality when fit, he doesn't play enough. He should have been fucked off ages ago, but no, he's given a new contract. His bottling it at Celtic Park last season suggests to me he isn't all that anyhow.

Ole, I dearly love him. But come on, be serious, he can't play a full game anymore.

So we have Tevez to come in tonight. Except he can't be fit and Ferguson has said he's been rushed back. I think it's a massive ask for a new player to come in and carry the attack, especially as he's unfit. Sure he may do this but I have a nagging doubt he's going to come in and get hurt from a lack of fitness. Everybody bangs on about how important pre-season is, but now it's not important for Tevez?

You say it's only one drawn game. What if we fail to beat Pompey away? We hardly have a decent record there.

I'm sorry, it's not acceptable after one game to be relying on a big lad to be stuck up front like on Sunday to score as we have no other options. Especially considering the money spent.

I just dearly hope all this is wrong. We beat Pompey and City, Tevez starts well and Rooney is back soon. We can't have it all ways- last season everybody claimed the title was won because of the storming start. We can't start poorly and it not be a concern.

Your first two points are correct and quite simply Saha hasn't been sold on probably because he's never fit during a transfer window and who is going to sign a currently crocked player?

Why can't Tevez be fit? His season was extended by Copa America and he's hardly been off partying for the past month.

I'm not a footballer, but they always bang on about match fitness and the importance of a decent pre season. Are these factors a con?

When I say fit I don't mean I don't disbelieve he can run around for 90 minutes, I'm just worried that chucking him straight in is a massive gamble, especially as he's basically leading the attack on his own. Sure he had Copa, but what about the 4 weeks of nothing after that?

Guess I'll find out soon, I just can't think of a much worse place to be at than Pompey away.

Premiership titles are won over a season, not one off day sunday afternoon. RVN was/is a great striker, who for whatever reason according to SAF surplus to requirements, we won the title playing exciting football the majority of the season.

Football is a team sport, just because there is no 25-30 goal striker playing for Man Utd, it did not stop us being the highest scorers in the league last season did it..

Brilliant. When did I say the league was over?

I'm just angry that a brilliant player in Rossi has been flogged without ever being given a go, a tryer in Smith has been shafted and we started the season with one striker. That striker is now injured and we're heaping a shit load of pressure on one player whose preparations have hardly been ideal.

He's said the cover is fine, nobody will be bought, when it patently isn't fine. You can keep saying it's only one game, you're a fuck load more confident over Wednesday than I am.

Reading were exactly the same against us last year. It's never a good result when you fail to beat someone at home, but there was plenty there for me to feel that the team is as good if not better than last season.

AC Milan won the Champions League last season without an out-and-out striker, so I'm guessing that's Sir Alex's plan for this season.

I think Man Utd may have problems this season against teams who just sit back and defend in numbers. You'll happily win most games and if you score first. You'll then be well away with your talent on the break. I just think if it gets to the last few minutes and you need a goal you've got nobody in the box to bang balls to. Man Utd on the charge in the last 10 mins is a an awesome sight and something that has won you a hell of a lot of games over the years. However with your current forward line I think you may well struggle in this aspect this season.

I agree with much of what Bowser has said. His views on Saha are very much like my views on Robben. Great when he's fit but thats so rare whats the point in having him.

I don't think we will. Off the top of my head we had 2 definite chance in the last game. Carrick missing the volley in the first half and O'shea through on goal forcing the keeper to make a save. Now if any of our attacking players had those chances all this talk wouldn't be happening. It's just very unfortunate that Rooney got injured, because imo he would of been in the same position as O'shea - and slotted it away. Furthermore it's unfortunate that another striker wasn't available when Rooney was taken off. Every big team struggle this week - most only just getting a win. Give it a bit of time, and we'll be back to the premiership pace.

I assume that's a typo and you meant "wasn't available".?

There was nothing unfortunate about it, it's the managers decision to sell two strikers, not buy any more and have nothing on the bench.

He started the season knowing Saha and Ole were out, it's not like say the end of last season where endless defensive injuries conspired to Fletcher and Richardson in the back four.

You can say Rooney would have finished O'Sheas effort. Maybe he would. Then again, Rooney had 3 chances himself that whilst not clear cut, were very decent that he maybe should have scored once from.

I totally agree with Spud, though I'd go further and say it was an issue last season too. West Ham twice, Newcastle away, Celtic away, Boro in the cup, Arsenal away to an extent are a few that spring to mind. I can think of very few times where a late surge and bombardment brought goals, with all those games featuring lots of pressure and the odd really good save, but never really the overwhelming tide like of old.

He should be. I expect him to play the holding role and, as you say, allow Scholesy to push further forward. I think that was lacking against Reading, he seemed to hang back a bit too much and Carrick was the one trying to get involved in the play.
