The old Man Utd Thread

I think Smalling has been fine for the most part. Yeah he was out of position for the goal, but it was hardly the only error in the buildup.

I'm impressed by Hernandez's part in that goal. He works a bit of space well, and picks out Nani with relative ease in a packed final third. It was a very nice move.

Hernandez goal just gets better the more I see it, his overall play isn't there just yet but I think the elements are all there it just needs a little tweaking.

The Nani and Raf combination is looking great, the only bad thing about Nani's form is where does it leave Valencia. He was one of our best players last year but Nani doesn't deserve to be shifted to the left (where he's not as good) and Valencia is so one footed he cant play there.

When Valencia is fit and able he'll occupy the right hand side with Nani on the left. I don't know where the idea of him not being able to play on the left or as good as on the left came from. He's perfectly fine to play on the left and as played very well there on a number of occasions.

Nani has 11 assists for the season, Valencia had 9 for all of last season.

Valencia is a highly specialised player whereas Nani is all over the place. I also don't like the way people are starting to boil down how good somebody is to these numbers - it's a horrible American import. How many times did Valencia tear down the wing, overlap a right back, pulling away a defender for the right back to pop it into the box I wonder?

Wasn't his goal with his left foot last night?

Probably a similar number of times to Nani. When Valencia does come back i'd like to see him and Nani swap wings every now and again, playing wingers on the 'wrong' side is quite common and there is no reason why he can't be dangerous cutting in from the left.

Overall the performance was decent enough last night but 1-0 has never felt safe all season and that proved to be the case again. With two inexperienced players on the right of defense Stoke might have done a lot better but there are still a few issues when Ferdinand is out. Smalling was strong in the air and he does have an eye for a pass but he doesn't seem to recognise when the best option is to just aim for row Z. Rafael had a good game but one thing i've noticed him do a couple of times is that he has a penchant for coming into the centre of the pitch when on the attack, regardless of how close he is to the box. It cost us a goal against Milan in the CL last season and he caused problems once or twice last night doing the same. He's improving by the game though and is beginning to offer more in attack now his defense is getting better.

Great goal by Hernandez, on course for 15 goals in his first season in the PL as a third choice striker (probably 4th when he arrived). Great game by Nani too, both in attack and defense, keeping him fit will be key to us winning the title this season.

There's no way that Nani provides as many and as high quality crosses as Valencia does - and he also works well with Rooney (how many of those crosses were headed in last season?) Nani could be the true successor to Ronaldo and be given licence to roam.

For a long time I have thought of Nani as a mini Ronaldo, except that he is a better team player.

Also Evra and Fletcher seem to be the engine of the side now. 2 really great players that are one of the reason ManU can grind out results when things aren't going well.

The big thing SAF has to face is losing a lot of senior players, as many as 4, in one go, maybe at the end of this season. Sooner or later he is going to have to do some more buying. Jack Rodwell must surely be making the move.

And it is very nice to see his buys of the last few seasons doing so well now, he can really develop players who are willing to learn.

If these half time scores stay like this until full time then I'll be very happy.

Arse 0-0 City

Blackburn 1-0 Scouse (edit: 2-0  )

Wolves 1-0 Chelsea

They won't of course :(
