The old Man Utd Thread

It seems that fate has decided that we will win the league, no matter how shit we are

The league is contriving to make us look imperious. There's not a single other team with a goal difference larger or level to their games played, and considering the game in hand (2 over City, even) we have a nice bit of breathing space. I still think Chelsea will probably regroup and finish the season strongly, but it will be far too late by then. They are losing the title right now.

If this season carries on as perfectly as this, I might have to start taking a deeper interest in football again. Have you seen how shit Liverpool and Chelsea are these days? Literally laughing my crayfish and rocket sandwich up at them.

And that Mexican guy who's known by at least three different names, he's a bit amazing. Have the Glazers fucked off yet? Is Owen Hargreaves still being paid? Is Rooney forgiven for being a despicable cunt?

And why has Macheda been sent to Italy to learn how to play in Serie A instead of following Welbeck's mission to help other Premiership teams beat our rivals before returning to base?

Macheda wasn't going to get past Berbatov, Rooney and Hernandez in the pecking order, plus Owen is fit now too. I always thought if we sent him out to Italy he wouldn't come back, but his agent is saying it's just to get experience, and he's not interested in angling for a move. I think he is unlikely to develop in the reserves, he is at that point of maturity where he just needs games. Equally though, if he does well at Sampdoria we'll get offers coming in, but it's worth the risk I think. If we loaned him to an PL club, that would obviously have been ideal, but I guess there was no interest either from the player or clubs.

It's nice to see your team playing well (not that we're wanting for that) but this is a really bad reason to support a team. I know we've been a bit crap most of the season so far, but that'll just make it all the more enjoyable when it all comes together, and we go on one of our unstoppable runs. This season has been really interesting, basically no games have been foregone conclusions, and this applies to our title rivals too.

I've never had the impression that Macheda will become good enough for a first team spot. If we loan him out to Serie A and sell him then so be it.

I know you won't be surprised by this but I agree. He's merely ok, nothing special and I can't ever see him reaching the levels needed to become a first team selection.

When you look at players like Hernandez, who's come in, settled right in and is banging in goals instinctively, then there's just no need for somebody as average as Macheda.

Saying all that though, it's been a policy of United for years, where they take young, raw talent, bring them through, then sell for a decent profit. Whereas occasionally, players like Hernandez, Ronaldo, etc will actually blossom into the real deal and find their way into the first team on a regular basis.

It's a strategy I don't mind them doing, just as long as we've got a solid first team to rotate them into. Something which I'm not all that confident about at the moment, regardless of our league position.

Hernandez is what, 3 years older than Macheda? It's become quite popular in the media to say he hasn't developed but considering he made his debut at the arse end of the 08/09 season (at 17) and then spent at least half of last season injured (when he probably would have got some games due to other injuries) it amazes me when people expect more. My opinion is that once he's bulked up he'll be a lot more dangerous, while he suffers from the expected trying too hard syndrome he gets brushed off the ball to easy. If he can phyically compete with defenders in the league then I think he could be excellent.

Also it wasn't that long ago that Hernandez wasn't doing so well and was thinking about giving up football altogether. No matter what happens to Macheda he's always going to be greatly remembered for his part in our last title win.

Yeah, I agree that he's got time to mature given his age, but I just don't see the raw potential in him. I suppose in a lot of ways it is down to te fact he's trying too hard to impress a lot of the time that lets him down, as when he seems more relaxed he plays better.

I don't doubt that a loan move will be good for him, but whether he's developing at a consistent enough rate, or if he's even got the untapped ability to cut it at United remains to be seen.

And please don't mention the ever-average Rodwell.

Cleverley will make up for wing-play that Nani has taken over from Giggs already and hopefully provide something in midfield alongside Anderson and Carrick.

Rodwell isn't average is he? I'll admit he's not had the best of seasons but he just oozes confidence on the ball and he can play with either foot. He should have played for England already as the holding midfield because he's one of the better ones, at 19 years of age.

Not to mention, I think its a certaintity that Sir Alex fancies as a player and it considered a matter of time before he follows in Wayne Rooney steps and leaves to join us.

I've never had the impression that Macheda will become good enough for a first team spot. If we loan him out to Serie A and sell him then so be it.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't to be honest. You can never tell if a player is going to make it or not apart from the super special talents ala Ronaldo (even people questioned him in his early years) but he does have something. He's got the arrogance and confidence of an Italian and I think thats always a good thing to have a striker as long as he channels it right. He's a big lad and has two good feet and can finish with aplomb.

I've watched countless times in the reserves and it's just too easy for him there but has struggled at times with the odd outing in the first team so this loan move is a fantastic opportunity for him to progress as a player. You have to remember he's only 19 years of age!

If he can get a run of games together at Sampdoria I reckon he'll score goals and with his confidence and self belief (which is already very high) improving he could come back and be twice the player. Just look what at what Welbeck is doing at Sunderland.

It helps Kiko as well that Fergie as earmarked as a future star of the club. If you want belief from anyone as a young player then you won;t do better than Fergie as he'll be given as much time as he needs to fulfill his potential.

It's a good job too as many good players would have left had it been the choice of fans.

I reckon that's aimed at me, right Trigg? ;)

It was aimed at anyone in particular really, all be it you're a passionate and glass half empty kind fan it as to be said ;)

I've noticed in the last few years people seem to want to write a young player off before they've even began. It's for that reason I'm always willing to let them mature as a person and a player to see what they can do.

Nani being the obvious one who's surprised many in the last 12 months or so. I've always like Nani as a player and I've defended him many times to fellow fans, probably have done on here a few times too. I've always thought he'd come good, but never to the level he's at now (irreplaceable for me at the moment in the United team) and I can only see him getting better.

It's easier to write a player off than have patience and I just wish sometimes that fans had a bit more patience with players.

Haha that's true. Still, the way Evans has regressed this season worries me.

I hope our boys are up for this today because no doubt the scousers will come out all guns blazing, lifted by the change in manager.

Will be interesting to see how Liverpool's defense does, my guess is that it is pretty much every Liverpool fans first choice (maybe an argument over Kelly/Johnson although the former is a better defender) yet all bar Skrtel have barely played this season. A quick check shows Agger, Aurelio and Kelly have played in a combined 12 league games this season while Rafael alone has played in 10.
