The old Man Utd Thread

Looks like injuries are starting to pile up. Ferdinand and Giggs out of the Marseille game and Anderson could be out for two months with more knee ligament damage. Rafael and Fabio are fit though which is something.

I assume we'll now see Rooney line up on the left with Berbatov through the center tomorrow night.

I don't think there's a lot separating an 'adventurous' centre back and a very withdrawn central midfielder. A lot of clubs have players who can play in both positions, or who have been converted from one to the other at some point (the Touré brothers, Busquets, Alex Song, Essien etc). If he was successful, it would stop us being linked with Rodwell at least.

Phil Jagielka has successfully played both positions but as an added bonus is also a good goalkeeper and has played the position several times.

He was a player we really should have taken to South Africa.

Do ITV still broadcast football in such a low resolution you feel like you're watching a computer game from 1990? I haven't dared go near them since the World Cup. Not that I could online then, as it liked to 'buffer' every 20 seconds.

Which sad cunt negged that post? ITV are fucking shit.

However, I've experienced a vast improvement so far. I managed to watch 3 minutes of football before it froze. It's now 'loading', or so it says. I don't think it's an issue at my end, given I have about 12mbps free, and it's a low bitrate stream.

Pathetic.

EDIT - Oh, it was that sad cunt.

Only two positives to take from that game -

1) Compared to some of our away games this season it may have been spectacularly dull but at least we didn't concede any goals.

2) Smalling was bloody brilliant. He looks completely at home playing at the top level.

SAF needs to buy Charlie Adam or move Rooney into midfield. There is nobody at the moment who can command the park. Just look at the difference when Scholes came on, but how many seasons has he got left?

As said previously Smalling was absolutely fantastic. He is quite nimble for such a big guy and seems to have a natural sense about how adventurous he can be in attack without compromising defence.

I agree with the sentiment but definitely not the player suggested or further messing with Rooney.

In a dream world we'd sign Xavi or Fabregas.

By spending big we'd buy Modric, Sneijder or Hamsik.

Rodwell and Defour would do a job but I'm not 100% sure they'd be the instant success that we'd need and may struggle.

Swine whatshisface at Munich would cost lots and do well, but I'm not sure he's creative enough but would be an improvement.

Cleverley is a United player and I'd much rather give him a chance.

I'd rather try Arteta if a deal could be done, if we're talking shortish term. He's what, nearly 30?

Hell, I'd probably persist with our fatty in Anderson than their fatty. So, yeah, no thanks.

Is it an exaggeration to say this the worst central midfield we've had since the Premier League began? I'm sure we probably put out worse at some point during the days of Djemba Djemba but in terms of 'these are our first choice players for a big European game'? It's so obviously weak I have to believe Ferguson is going to bolster it in the Summer.

It's not weak as such in my eyes, but definitely lacks creativity and the ability or willingness to dictate play and be prepared to play the ball forward, Scholes aside. I think the problem is the three that started are so similar it's untrue, especially when they're not on top form.

There's the caveat that each brings something slightly different. Fletcher at his best brings energy, the ability to get stuck in and a willingness to get forward. Carrick is very neat and tidy in linking the player and reads the game well. He can play the killer ball at times. Gibson, err, I guess he can strike a ball really, really well 1 time in 5.

Problem is none are in particularly good form and all end up doing the same solid but lacklustre job that has zero magic or creativity. The team as a whole lacks the magic that we've had over the years. Carrick is the weird one for me. He has the ability to do it all yet doesn't. He seems timid, or scared of messing up, just something isn't quite right with him. Maybe it's his attitude or temperament or fear but he can do all what he was bought for, but seems happy to only do the defensive element.

The other thing I'd say is we've been spoilt with Robson, Ince and Keane, Scholes. That's four players who where superb, three all time greats and two who'd have a shout to get in a United best ever XI. So to say X isn't as good as those, whoich you've basically done by saying it's the weakest ever, is why I think it's harsh.

Will the manager buy? Does he have money? I said this problem was apparent seasons ago and it wasn't rectified I'm not sure what has changed since to make him now act. If anything it's worse now as the likes of Sneijder and Modric where available years ago. Will the manager even get it right though? He's consistently spent big on the center of midfield and how many times has he got it right of late? By giving Anderson that epic contract I think he's going to persist with him too.

Yeah you're right that's it's maybe a bit unfair to compare current players to some of the best we've ever had, but even by the standards of other top teams in Europe I think our central midfield looks weak. It obviously doesn't help that Fletcher and Carrick simply aren't playing at the standard they were 2-3 seasons ago. Anderson is a total enigma for me, I'm still not sure what his role in the team is. Whenever I see him play the behind-the-striker role I honestly think he looks quite lost. He seems to be better when he plays deeper and has more time and space to pick up the ball and run with it.
