The old Man Utd Thread

Is this the same Ferguson that said Seba Veron will not be sold on a Wednesday for only him to join Chelsea on the Friday?

I guess he thought it unlikely he would find anyone stupid enough to buy him eh. :o

What a dour match tonight. We lack any attacking verve or fluidity when Rooney or Tevez are absent. I missed the goals as I fell asleep around the 75 minute mark.

I don't think its a case of lacking without Tevez or Rooney playing, I think it's more a case that Saha just hasn't got the presence or fitness to make things happen at the moment. I'm not entirely convinced he will ever have that presence again

It did rather feel like a different game once Rooney was on. Just showed us the creative and attacking threat that we needed and that Saha had been lacking. I mean, Louis is good when he's on form, but that appears to be once a season now, which is a shame.

Carrick did little to justify starting though. I'd still pick Hargreaves over him anyday.

Still, nice to have young Mr Park back though.

Wrong, he does a dirty job but he does it well

I still think from watching today he slows down the play a lot. The ball came into him and 9/10 times he would stop, turn around, turn again and then pass side ways or backwards

It's probably a confidence thing. Last season his passing and his range of passes was excellent. It's what really made him standout in the latter half of the season. I'm the biggest Hargreaves fan going, but passing and making the most of the ball isn't his strong point. More often than not he will square the ball or knock it back to Ferdinand.

Amen.

Despite being out of the side for ages, he was one of the few players who did show our 'cutting edge' - good movement, passing and chasing down EVERYTHING with a 110% workrate - something we lacked without Tevez, Hargreaves and for the most part Rooney.

"Stand out"? Hardly...

Anyway I thought he was dire yesterday. I know the whole team were, but he was the main reason we were playing such sloooooow football. And some of his "passing" was awful. He no longer has a foot to stand on to start ahead of Hargreaves or Anderson and when Scholes comes back at the end of the month I can't see him starting many games at all.

I'm afraid Louis will never become the player he used to be before all the injuries. He just has no presence about him anymore.

The whole team looked very tired yesterday, as they did against Birmingham. Completely understandable considering the amount of games they've had to play over the Christmas period. I hope they get a rest now and find that sharpness of passing and finishing that we were seeing earlier in the season.

I thought Carrick did alright yesterday. He tracked back well and did the best he could going forward. Villa clearly had no intention of playing football and he always struggles without a striker dropping into the pocket to pick, and hold, his passes. Defense was awesome again, made Abonglahor look mediocre for most of the game.

O'Neill is starting to get on my nerves a bit now too, he's like a softly spoken Warnock sometimes. Was in the paper quoted as saying "we didn't deserve to lose". How the fuck do you work that out? You had no chances and we created 3 or 4 decent ones.

There was a period early last season where Carrick was playing far more aggressive - through balls, daring beckham esque passes, taking shots, even scoring a few long distance. It seems the longer he's been at Man U, the more defensive minded he's become. I'm sure its not a coincidence, and part of the Carlos master plan, but he seems a less well rounded player than when we bought him. Now that we have Hargreaves they should urge him to push forward - find a first team niche.

I may have mentioned it previously but I was sure Carrick was purchased as a replacement for Scholes with Hargreaves bought in as the holding midfielder. The delay in bringing in Hargreaves meant Carrick had to play the defensive role rather than an attcking one.

I think the problem this season is partly the 'second season blues' and also being unsure over how good Anderson was going to be (with Scholes injured). Obviously Anderson has been nothing short of excellent (still needs a few goals mind) and I think Carrick should be pushing up more and making the incisive passes he was last season.
