Alan Smith is still a fan favourite

Too right - and being sent off for abusing the ref isn't likely to change that anytime soon. In all fairness, the goal that outraged him probably shoudn't have been given, but when it's one of six you've got a to be a passionate soul to give a toss.

Yep, that's what I love about him. They are already 5-0 down but he still cares enough to get sent off for disputing the sixth.

Because Kaka was better than him last year.

Debatable.

Also, I know a few people have slated Carrick asking what he brings to the team. Well hopefully the performance against Newcastle will go some way to proving he has a future at Utd. He was top quality today, in both attack and the little defensive work he had to do.

That's not overly true, he has the same tendency to go missing in some games like Ronaldo.

Verry true. I wonder if United had their normal back four he would have been stopped. All of his goals came from Heinze screwing up alone or with someone else.

Against Liverpool, Mascherano had him in his pocket.

Saha injured again. Quelle surprise: BBC Story

I didn't think we'd be buying anyone but I wouldn't be surprised to see us try for Berbatov.

i'm not too concerned about saha getting injured these days, it'll just hopefully make them sell him a bit quicker and get someone decent in his place.

my real worry is hargreaves. he's always injured and we've only just got him.

Is he worth it for 30M? The way Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney are playing at the moment he won't get a start. Huntelaar wouldn't be a bad signing for something like £14M.

I've wanted us to get Huntelaar for ages and I still love the idea but he's too good a player to not get a regular run out and like Berbs I'm not sure where he'd fit with Rooney and Tevez playing so well together, but still, having someone like Klaas to bring on when needed would never be a bad thing as we don't really have a lot of striking cover at the mo. As class as Berbs is I think Huntelaar would fit better with how we play, anyway.

To be honest such criticism of either player, especially Kaka, is a bit harsh. How many players on the entire planet manage to not occasionally have occasionaly off games?

You'll often see Gerrard disappear in games/big games/England games. He's done it his whole bloody career, although he does seem to have a habit of turning up when it counts on the odd occasion.

Kaka was easily the outstanding player of last year. He scored 3 against you guys in the UCL Semi final last year, effectively dumping you out of the competition. Ronaldo scored in the first leg, yes, but Kaka got two at Old Trafford.

And, yes, I'm aware what happened in the final! Kaka won the free kick that led to the first goal and had an assist for the second (good old Wiki :P).

He was also top scorer in the competition. Considering what he did last year you can't take that away from him. Easily the player of the year. That's hardly "going missing in big games" now is it.

The guy is effortless sometimes. He looks like he's gonna be slow but just drifts pasts people with such ease.

I was at the Emirates back in 2006 when Brazil played Argentina...not only did I see Elano play and think he was bloody brilliant (and was very surprised when Man City got him/surprised no one had heard of him) I was witness to Kaka's fantastic goal where he picked the ball up in his own half, waltzed past a defender or two (beating Messi for pace easily), and arrogantly rolled the ball past the on rushing keeper into the net. The whole crowd was off it's feet, and at that point we cared little that Ronaldinho wasn't playing. An awesome way to finish the match.

Hey it was a friendly but it was an awesome thing to watch.

I've never seen that before, it's quality, i'd like to add this as an example of fucking up a 'world class defender' http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JqJhvToS3qM

Anyway, i'm not arguing Kaka deserved the acclaim for last year, I was simply defending Ronaldo and his very occasional bad game. I've not seen one defender inparticular able to stop Ronaldo, whereas both Ronaldinho and Kaka can be kept quiet with the right personnel.

Kaka deserved the award ahead of Ronaldo for his performances in the Champions League and carrying Milan to the final. I don't think anyone can argue that. But if Ronaldo keeps up the form he's showing this season and keeps producing the goals then I think we'll be very hard pushed to find anyone more deserving of the "player of the season" award 07/08. I think it was the commentator last night who mentioned that Ronaldo hasn't gone 2 games this season without scoring at least one goal. That's an astonishing statistic for any player playing in the Premiership, let alone a winger.

The first statement is a bit of a tough one. Usually games between the top 4 are all close, cagey encounters with the defenders been the star players for the match. No one likes to lose so they usually set out not to concede. The one open game I can remember was Highbury a few years ago when he bagged a brace.

He's performed consistently well in the Champions League for the last 18 months, also scoring a goal every game I think this season.

Kaka doesn't choose when he want to perform. He was marked out of the game against Liverpool, and Hargreaves shackled him the last time Milan played Bayern. He's like every other player in the world, he haa good games and bad games.

Both quality players, that there is no doubt. I just feel FIFA favor the other Leagues. Ronaldo score an incredible amount of goals last season not just for Man Utd, but also for his national team from out wide. Most people feel it was an injustice - but it could have gone either way and you really cant say Kaka didn't deserve it.

This I agree with, attacking players are normally nullified through better defenders and double/ triple marking. This means they'll have one or two flashes which prove pivotal.

Ronaldo did nothing in the Arsenal game bar score one and make the other, he also created the winner at Anfield last season which won the league. He's progressively been getting better in Europe, too. He was good against Roma (then again so was everybody). For the home game against Milan he was good, particularly the second half. He (along with the team) were eaten by Gattuso in the second game, though he's undoubtedly improved from the season before when the Crespo-Milan games showed both him and Rooney up. As mentioned, would a fit Vidic and Rio coped better with Kaka? I think so. It's an excuse, but the number of games around the Milan one can't have helped him rest, unlike Milan who rested everybody. Remember it was 2-0 down made into a 4-2 win away to Everton prior to Milan away, next game being City away (which he scored the winner).

Hasn't he scored 5 or so in this years CL so far too?

He's been flying for Portugal, too, probably the best young player at the WC. One moment stopped him getting the award.

Basically, watch him fly at the Euros for Portugal and after Utd have hopefully won the league (and maybe done even better in the ECL), he'll get it this time.

Scholes is still the best player at the club, though :(
