Since Capello has just signed a 'new' contract with England, does this mean Benitez is on his way to Inter?

The full article does allude to that. I don't expect there to be a quick resolution to this one though.

This summer is going to be horrible.

Just heard a rumour that Rafa has been sacked... watch this space!

The Times have an article on their site suggesting Benitez is going to be offered £3m to leave early. As usual no direct quotes, but it's a Tony Barrett piece so should carry a little more weight than the norm, and if rumours elsewhere are circling, then maybe this time there is some fire creating the smoke?

Damn, was going to have a nice chilled couple of hours playing RDR, now I'll be F5ing sport pages until bedtime.

Poor Ramone isn't here to celebrate :(

Well there's no indication he'll accept the payout yet. Though he'd be mad not to, since he won't exactly be getting any support from the board, and he could probably walk into either of the Milan jobs.

Might not be true... it's just a rumour... for now.

The article I linked to is written by Tony Barrett, who used to write for the Echo - so I suspect a source at the club has leaked it. Though as I said, whether Benitez accepts it is another matter.

God. I absolutely hated last season and the style of football we played, so in any other circumstance I'd want this change. But the problem is the whole money thing. H&G have set a completely unrealistic price - they're never going to get £600m - so I doubt we'll be sold before August. Which means we'll have to get a manager in on the cheap, who will hardly have any transfer budget to work with, and have to convince the likes of Torres, Gerrard and Masch to give us another season.

I think I may be invisible...

Mate who works for a sports channel oversees was drinking with Ian Rush last season and Rushie reckoned King Kenny would be the short-term go-to option.

Shit, this makes me one of those people who says, 'my nan's friend's son cuts the hair of this guy who works in a garage that fixes the cars of some taxi driver who shifts players in and out of Melwood and he reckoned Carlton Cole was driven in for a medical this morning'.

Either him or Sammy Lee would make sense, but only for a few weeks hopefully, just to oversee any transfers. We'd definitely need someone full-time in at the start of pre-season.

I suspect they want someone good. If Rafa was wanted by anyone big they wouldn't be offering him £3m to fuck off.

One of the sticking points with Juve was that they didn't want to pay a load of compensation to us. Waiting for us to get rid is better for them than paying £Xm for him.

This is true. But I do think Rafa is pretty good given the right conditions...Well, quite good at least. Although him disappearing to mid-table Spanish team at some point next year does seem equally likely.

Ha ha

He's still a very good manager. He's probably become our Sven if Liverpool were England. He probably needs new scenery.

They'd be the most stable options for now.

Mixed feelings if Rafa has gone. Like him but it was plain to see something wasn't right last season. If true can only hope this is the only major exit of the summer and not the start of the exodus.

Last one for the night, tweets from the Telegraph's Merseyside reporter:

Would suggest that the "Rafa sacked" headlines are pushing it a bit. Negotiations still ongoing tonight. He's also not been sacked

Not because he won't go - that looks pretty much nailed on - but because he's not been given the pay-off. This is mutual consent.

Final word tonight from #LFC sources is that Benitez has not been sacked, but just a matter of crossing the ts and dotting the lower case js
