Loads of stuff I've omitted. 10 choices really isn't enough. I've got no Scorcese for a start, or the 80's actioners of my youth , no Carpenter either.

Meh.

EDITED

If I dwell on it too long, I know I'll think of something that SHOULD be on there.

Three to be added, I need to ponder.

You need to watch some movies made before 1990, man.

I'm not gonna criticise, especially as I love the Big Sleep.

But have you seen Maltese Falcon? It's the much better noir. Especially as it almost makes sense.

Yes I've seen The Maltese Falcon. I love them both, and if I could have done so I'd have included both. I just preferred the atmosphere more in Big Sleep, the chemistry between Bogart and Bacall was fabulous and Martha Vickers as Carmen is one of the sexiest performances in cinema ever.

Having read the book I had no trouble following the plot to Big Sleep, not that it matters. It's pleasure is in watching Bogey, Bacall at the top of the game.

Mine is, generally, a pretty generic list. And yes, if you ask me tomorrow it'll be a different list for sure. The next time I watch Jackie Brown I guarantee that'll be wedged in there somewhere, for example, and the same with The Big Lebowski and a bunch of other films. Anyhow, in Alphabetical order:

Films 1 - 12 Angry Men

Films 2 - Alien

Films 3 - Aliens

Films 4 - Amelie

Films 5 - Annie Hall

Films 6 - Brazil

Films 7 - Christmas Story, A

Films 8 - Cinema Paradiso

Films 9 - Dumb & Dumber

Films 10 - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Films 11 - Fargo

Films 12 - Fight Club

Films 13 - Pulp Fiction

Got to say, I'm tempted to up the limit to 20 choices because 1) 10 just ain't enough, and 2) It'll give a more varied top 100 (or at least not end up containing dozens of single vote choices). Whatcha think?

Oh, and you don't have to list your choices in order (unless you really want to) - each film will get 1 point per vote, regardless of how high you put it in your list.

Tokyo Story

Casablanca

Ikiru

This Is Spinal Tap

Groundhog Day

Grave of the Fireflies

Jaws

Citizen Kane

The Big Lebowski

Aliens

Star Wars trilogy (original)

North By Northwest

12 Angry Men

Mony Python's Life of Brian

Ghost in the Shell

It's completely wrong though. It doesn't have space for Hitchcock, or Python, or 12 Angry Men or plenty of others I could also include. Maddening.

Amended. Though probably still wrong.

Have to say, were it not for the book, I'd have been completely stumped by The Big Sleep. In fact, even reading that I had to read around it to understand some of the censorship issues that created plot holes!

Agree entirely about Martha Vickers, she's unreal in that film and yes, Bacall and Bogart are sensational together.

But I dunno, if I had to pick one, I'd probably go for Maltese just because it's that little bit more cohesive, that touch more 'macho', it's not concerned with things outside the film (Big Sleep had a couple of re-edits after test audiences wanted to see more of Bacall and Bogart) and it just defines so much that is right with classic Hollywood cinema.

At least today.

I'll probably change my mind tomorrow and go for Gilda.

I always thought it was because Bacall's people didn't feel she was very good and she was completely blown away by Vickers.
