Errr, another list with which I'll probably change my mind two minutes after posting.

Well, here goes - A list with which I could sit down and not complain about watching;

Seven Samurai / Shichinin no samurai,

Red Bead / Akahige,

A Better Tomorrow / Ying hung boon sik,

A Better Tomorrow II / Ying hung boon sik II,

Infernal Affairs / Miu gaan diy,

Oldboy,

Hard-Boiled / Lat sau san taam,

American History X,

Yojimbo,

Sanjuro / Tsubaki Sanjûrô,

Clerks,

Mallrats,

Dogma,

Any Given Sunday,

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Hmm, tough one where Goodfellas, Apocalypse Now, The Hidden Fortress and a couple of others could be changed for one or two in the list but I think I'll leave it as it is.

Three John Woo films! And I thought I was a fan

..and Four Akira Kurosawa films

I thought I would create a list with which I could sit down and not complain about a single one.

However, A Better Tomorrow & One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest could be changed for something else now I look at the list.

Did you ever purchase the "A Better Tomorrow Ultimate Edition" release?

Speaking of that ultimate edition, what is with these weird tin box/keep case hybrids that are all over the place at the moment? Someone obviously thinks it's a good idea but we'll be fucked if they break and we need new ones.

johnT - More obscure and foreign films have been quite inaccessable until quite recently so it's inevitable that they're not going to feature much on these lists, I think most people are picking things they've watched and watched over many years. When I was first started looking outside current mainstream stuff it was difficult and expensive to see foreign films, plus there was nothing like imdb where you could go and see if the film you were debating buying on an £18 Artificial Eye VHS was even any good. That wasn't long ago at all but it's so much easier now, you can pay much less and know exactly what it is you're spending your hard-earned on (or not spending anything at all on, even). I wouldn't be surprised if the opposite to what you say holds true and people under a certain age actually have more foreign stuff on their lists. If we were doing lists of the films we feel are the best I'm sure there'd be much more of that sort of thing too, I know mine would be almost completely different. 'Favourites' is ridiculously subjective anyway, Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom is my favourite of the trilogy even though I know it's the worst, just because I've got memories of watching it every single time I went to stay at my auntie and uncle's when I was a kid.

If I'd have seen something like Stalker, for example, earlier than just a few years ago I've got no doubt it'd be on there, but at the moment it would seem kind of fickle if I left out one of the others I grew up with to accomodate it. I feel like I need to have lived with a film for quite a while before I can truthfully say it's one of my absolute favourites.

Do the Right Thing

Annie Hall

Citizen Kane

Pulp Fiction

Bambi

Insomnia (the Nolan remake)

Lost Highway

Stand By Me

American Beauty

Se7en

A One and a Two (Yi Yi)

Mysterious Skin

Home Alone

LA Story

Rushmore

A list I'd treat with suspicion, missing out loads that for whatever reason I'm not thinking of now probably. It's got a nice balance though. A lot of these I remember in terms of the impression they made, and how it felt watching them as opposed to how impressed I am critically, or what characters and dialogue I can remember. 'Mysterious Skin' is associated with my summer between the second and third years of university, listening to Slowdive and feeling really happy about life, whilst slipping at the same time into isolation and depression. It's got this gorgeous glistening, suspended feel to it. 'Do the Right Thing' has this wonderful offbeat, sun-bleached colour (take that pun if you want) that makes it so unpredictable and fun to inhabit for its duration. 'Insomnia' also has this chilled, misty hushed feeling. Without wishing to sound too much like Crispin in his current habit of slightly unconvincing bold statement-making, when I think about it I think about the icy blueness that pervades the film. It's so-so storywise, but fantastic as a visual evocation of atmosphere. 'A One and a Two' is another gorgeous film - to watch (with those in-car nighttime scenes) and in terms of pace (it's not got that title for any old reason). I can see how that can put some off, but it feels really confidently patient - unhurried but still focused and observant. It's also really sad, which works with me especially: I make more of a connection (more of an intuitive personal investment) with films and music and books when I'm depressed. They end up meaning more to me, and this impression remains.

And then there are others that are smart or well-directed, or have brilliant characters and dialogue: 'Citizen Kane', 'Se7en', 'Rushmore', 'La Story' and it's east-coast counterpart 'Annie Hall'. 'Pulp Fiction' is such, such fun - it has this real Chaucerian delight in the telling of tales. And 'Bambi' is literally stunning to watch.

I'm assuming that there's just a couple more days for people to vote or change their vote. Also when presented with the results, will it be like channel 4 and take six hours to find out number 1?

Don't go expecting the results tomorrow is all I'm saying... I'll peck away at it as I get time, but it might not be done for a while.
