PS3: Too soon to buy?

Its MGS4 that the system NEEDS RIGHT NOW.

I won't deny that it'll be a big name title, but does anyone think the franchise still carries the same weight it did back during the MGS2 build-up hyperbole? If the system is still £425 I don't see MGS4 doing much in terms of flogging extra hardware, by the time MGS2 arrived the PS2 had already dropped in price from it's £299 luanch price.

The thing that worries me is that if loads of people are waiting for MGS4 and/or FFXIII to buy a PS3, then these titles may be held back or made multiformat, thereby diluting their worth as exclusives or compromising their feature sets. That at least doesn't seem to be happening to MGS4 & would hope not FFXIII either, but the longer the PS3 underperforms the less certain anything is.

This worries me because I want these games to be the best they can be by using the PS3 to it's utmost, which is unlikely if they have to be made with porting to other formats later in mind.

Motorstorm and Resistance are already more than worthy of picking the console up for. Could a sequel to one or both be due this Christmas?

Insomniac are concentrating on the PS3's Ratchet & Clank, so you'll be lucky. As for Evolution's MotorStorm, Rushy is the man to ask. Though, again, I don't think it's on the cards to be frank. They'd have to work very quickly.

Rubbish, it pisses on the PS2 launch and plenty of others.

Buy Virtua Fighter 5, download some movies and watch them through HDMI, get a copy of the Planet Earth Blu-Ray, download porn and wank yourself silly, play Resistance online, ditto Motorstorm, get hold of Oblivion if you've not played it before, bring a mate round for some Virtua Tennis, check out Flow, put together some HD slideshows of your holidays, pre-order Heavenly Sword and GTAIV, mop up all the great PS2 games, blah, blah, blah...In terms of solid games in the first few months it's following more the PSone launch than the PS2 thank goodness.

This month, PS3 had two retail games released: both licenced movie tie-ins, this follows on from April which had four releases: all licenced movie tie-ins. Two months of all-shovelware isn't a stellar line-up whichever way you spin it, and online content isn't great either - with Europe getting Joust and er, that's it.

The PS3 has very little to offer me, all of the multiplatform ports are inferior to the 360 versions (Oblivion excluded), the online service is inferior (online service > online multiplayer) with a complete lack of desirable content in the store.

Calling all Cars may be the best thing ever, but it's one game, and if I don't like it, then there's nothing else on the service. XBLA has what? 98 games by now, with two more a week? PSN is averaging one a month, and one of the drums I've banged is that I expected the PSN service to launch with a best-of the third party softography to date - just like it did with retail releases. Surely the point of these small download games was to encourage small developers rather than be another outlet for first-parties?

Resistance is the my favourite shooter since Half-Life 2 and Motorstorm brings back the same sort of buzz that Wipeout did for me on the PS1. They justified my purchase of the PS3, along with F1, but apparently I'm insane. :)

The rampant fanboyism in every PS3 thread on this forum defies belief.

The rampant fanboyism is on both sides of the divide. I haven't played Resistance but have played Motorstorm and was underwhelmed by it. I think my expectations had gone way too high and I was amazed at the loading times etc. I still think that the PS3 has yet to justify it's price, when it does I'll get one. For me I reckon that will be spring next year.

Not on this specific forum it isn't.

No he's right, every camp is covered on here. Some people used to get real touchy if you even dared criticise anything to do with the PS3, screaming fanboy from the rooftops. I remember bemoaning the lack of content in the original Japanese MotorStorm. I got called a moron for asking for simple things like a Time Trial, it'll never work they screamed at me before calling me an xbot. Oh look the developer announces a Time Trial mode as DLC and the same people who bitched at me now love the idea.

That's the kind of idiot who lives in Sonyville on here.

See what I mean.

What, you don't think the people who were bitching at me for daring to criticise anything are a little bit stupid? At launch the PS3 owners on here were overly defensive, complaining at the merest hint of criticism. It was terrible, every post in every thread about anything on the PS3 had to all roses and sunshine or the posse, usually lead by Strafe, would descend upon you like a bunch of teen girls unable to believe their favourite boy band were miming.

It would have been like a 360 love machine shouting down anyone who dare said that the 360 was louder than silence or that Live Arcade was amazing.*

*This was back when it was shit.

...labelling everyone like that isn't very helpful either. I got one at launch and had a brilliant Christmas as a result, I've regularly criticised things that have bugged me about it but all in all it's done me very well the last six months.

Seems to be the only console I can remember where people complaining about it are those that haven't got one. Actually I remember the same with the Dreamcast come to think of it.

Hmm. Wasn't the Dreamcast owned only by rabid Sega Fanboys who'd not criticise a machine for merely playing host to a few arcade ports, and Skies of Arcadia? The kind of people who liked Shenmue because it cost a lot to develop, and simply ignored the fact that it was as boring as pigshit?

(I've obviously failed to get off disk two of Shenmue 2...)

I don't see the unfairness, really.

So you're a fan of blind hypocrisy then and agree with them? I didn't think you were that silly. Still I did laugh when the Time Trial content was announced so people like that do serve some purpose.

Still I love it when morons call me an xbot, no idea where it came from.* I remember the last time and I posted this.

*well of course I do, the label was given to me by blind defenders of Sony who had a cry every time the bad man said something nasty about their system.

I think it'll catch on eventually. It seems to be following the same pattern as the PSP. A bit underwhelming at first but the games will come and it looks to be sooner this time around. The only reason I haven't bought a PS3 is because I got burnt with the PSP. Sure I like it now but I could have waited and gotten it cheaper and we all know the PS3 will be getting a price cut. Besides I can play on my mates for free without being mugged by Sony for one.

I agree, although Angel moans about it and he's got one. Mind you, he moans about everything.

I do remember the PS2 getting more abuse than anything I can remember, but most of that was from actual users.

To be honest it thoroughly deserved it at the time, I just don't think the PS3 merits such pathological hatred as it works pretty well, has some decent software and can do some useful other stuff.

It's quite expensive is the only glaring point, everything else seems to follow from there. I wonder if other companies employ people to slag off each others products on forums under bogus accounts? Actually it's a no-brainer I suppose. I wonder what the going rate for a professional flamer is?

Be fun digging up these threads in a few years :)

Wish I could find the old PS2 threads, can't remember if they were on the old Edge forums or old Rllmuk servers.

LOL

A few months ago I decided to lay off Rllmuk for a while until all this daft business with the PS3 had died down a bit, and I swear you were posting the same nonsense then Beertiger. Keep on sticking it to the SDF dude!

Shit sucks. *Closes browser for another few months*

They've all gone on holiday :)

The only thing I've said about the PS3 in this thread has been positive, so erm... not sure what you're talking about. Do you think it's going to have a bad selection of games this autumn? I was just repling to Vezna's comments about how the PS3 gets jumped on in here when in reality everything gets a bit of stick and every format has it's few blind defenders.
