PS3: Too soon to buy?

I really struggle to understand this forum with regards to Halo. I'm not saying it's a bad game, but pc games were doing it as well long before. For such a fussy bunch of people you sure have a soft spot for Halo

Lets move on, no one here is ever going to be anything other then dismissive ;)

It's the only FPS up to that point which was essentially just a sandpit for facing off against AI, in a single player (rather than faux deathmatch) setting. Chess with guns. It presented a different approach to doing a single player FPS, rather than introducing any whizzy new features. PC FPSes at the time had become this technical arms race where the core gameplay wasn't all that far removed from Quake 2.

It was still insanely over-rated at the time, but most people have seen sense (about the mediocre workmanship of the 1P game once the novelty had worn off) since then.

Single player Halo > Single player Resistance > Single player Halo 2

There.

I've spent all day playing MLB 2K7, thanks to the PS3's lack of region locking. I'd have preferred to have got the 360 version really, but being in PAL I didn't have a choice.

Halo came into a genre dominated by the PC and shook it up, introduced so much of what we now take for granted in the genre. I have to agree with every other person here and call you a nutjob.

I love this thread. First the Crackdown fun, now some Resistance Vs Halo. Everything but PS3.

Personally my gaming habits have changed significantly in the last say 5 years. I have much less time to play and have finally accepted this after a period of buying loads of games and not playing them. So firstly I probably won't buy all three consoles this time around, not now anyway. Secondly the PS3, to get the best out of it IMO, needs a HDTV which I do not own. Thirdly the price, which wouldn't be so bad for what you get for that, if I didn't know that I would be letting the PS3 sit idle due to my lack of time to get the best out of it. Lastly the Wii seems to suit me much better at the moment. Short bursts of gaming and multiplayer is a big part of gaming for me now.

This is not meant as negative PS3 post so please God don't take it as one. Was just trying to answer the initial question and why at the moment the PS3 is not for me.

Everything but PS3.

Because, deep down, everyone agrees on the ps3. The least controversial launch ever. nice piece of kit, too expensive if you're not interested in blueray or don't have a hd-tv, nice launch line up if you don't have a 360, not enough exclusive yet, and an old controller.

And that's it.

This simply isn't true, is it? Post-launch release games I can think of that aren't movie tie-ins: F.E.A.R, Oblivion, Virtua Tennis, (possibly) Enchanted Arms, (possibly) Dark Kingdom, and I think one other I can't recall (and certainly aren't going to waste time looking up.)

I didn't mean to exaggerate, I took the info from 1Up.com, a US site where those games must have already been released, but it still isn't much, and there's little coming until July.

And as for the Halo vs Resistance thing - Sony fans get thrown one decent FPS in ten years and think it's Gods gift to the genre. It's not that great, it emulates Half-Life 2 rather poorly and in the shallowest way possible, doesn't get good until about three hours in and doesn't bring anything new to the table.

Interesting weapons: Perfect Dark

Gameplay: Halo

Story: Half-life 2

You could replace "Sony" with "console FPS" and be talking about Halo.

Yeah sure, if Halo was as bleedingly average and by the numbers as Resistance is. I've had powerful pcs and consoles over the years, and Halo is a refinement of what was a great distance between the two platforms in the past. It might be a suprise to people that Halo got the praise and following it did because it earned it.

And while we're at it, Crackdown isn't a killer app as it didn't push hardware (actually it might have next NPD, although that would be more to Halo 3 Beta).

The only two games to do that were Dead Rising (slightly) and Gears of War. Whether they appeal to you or not is irrelevant.

Halo was the best FPS since Half-Life. Which is no mean feat, really.

The shield, two guns, co-op, vast levels with dynamic saving, vehicles and decent AI. On top of that, it actually played great on a platform which it shouldn't. By contrast, on PC there was Deus Ex, Operation Flashpoint, and Tribes 2 which were all very different affairs to Halo, and didn't "do it as well long before".

Nothing is a "killer app" if the machine isn't selling.
yes, unfortunately the ps3 hasn't *any* particular title that has had a large attach rate compared the sales of the actual hardware.

it's sort like the launch of the ps2 in japan, where a lot of their population were purchasing the systems simply for dvd playback since it was a cheaper solution than an actual dvd player (at the time). but unlike the the ps2 driving sales of dvd's, it's not like either blu-ray or hd-dvd are burning up the sales charts and are going to drive the regular dvd format into extinction anytime soon.

I think Lost Planet sold more units than Dead Rising did. Post Christmas sales would have been a lot slower, I think.

The ironic thing for me is that I would most likely be completely blown away by Resistance & Motorstorm seeing as the last FPS I played was Half-Life 1 on the PS2 & The last racer was Ridge Racer type 4 on the PSOne.

Whether I would continue to play them after the HD shininess has worn off is another matter though. Even though I was'nt playing it on a PC I enjoyed Half-Life 1 & could see the cleverness of it's design, but I had to make myself finish it & never went back after I did.

I suppose the acid test would be something like Halo on a 360 or Half-Life 2 on a PC as to whether I really could "get in" to these games, but I'm not willing to buy a new PC or 360 (or PS3) just to find that out.
