PS3: Too soon to buy?

Even though the 360 has more games just now, i'd easily choose the PS3 over that system because:

1) I know its not going to die on me 10 minutes after switching the machine on.

2) The build quality of the PS3 is of higher quality than the 360.

3) Its got an HDMI port.

4) Its quiet.

5) It plays PS1/2 games.

6) Its a Blu-Ray Player.

7) I can upgrade the HDD on the PS3 to my wishes and not be tied to either 20/120 gb drives.

 It'll play host to more Japanese content over its lifespan than the 360 ever will.

9) Xbox/MS customer support is awful.

10) Its region free (games)!

The reason the PS3 is more expensive is because its a far superior machine. The release of the 360 Elite (with HDMI port, bigger HDD, etc) only backs up the claim!

Firstly, GTA IV is not a PS3 exclusive. Secondly, MGS4 has slipped to March next year. Thirdly, if you consider SOCOM, Folklore and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune "pretty packed", then you'll be blown away by the 360's run-in to the end of 2007.

I'm pretty sure that Saints Row 2 got cancelled for the PS3 as well.

Edit: Nevermind, it was Saints Row that got cancelled, not the sequel

BioShock, Mass Effect,

One confirmed coming to the PC (which I personally believe to be a better platform for FPS games, but that's another thread), the other strongly rumoured to be hitting the PC, especially taking into consideration their previous games (Jade Empire and KOTOR both hit PC after being announced as Xbox-exclusive).

It seems that the ease of porting games from PC -> Xbox leads to the same as last gen, namely many of the Xbox exclusives hitting the PC.

I mentioned GTA IV because you had it down on the release list you copied - one that seemed to consist of PS3 exclusives. At least I thought that was the point of your post. As for 360 titles this year, Halo 3, BioShock, Mass Effect, Forza Motorsport 2, Too Human, Splinter Cell: Conviction and Project Gotham Racing 4 are the ones that immediately spring to mind.

Incidently, the impressive LittleBigPlanet is down for a 2008 release on PS3 the last time I looked. I'd also like to see your list of the "lots of 3rd party titles" too.

I'm betting it'll be March. Certainly doesn't seem it will make its intended 2007 release anyway, and that was my point.

If it wasn't for the fact they've finished both language tracks and November EU release dates keep appearing on IGN et al I'd agree with you. Seems on schedule.

I'm quite happy with my machine. It's had more use in a fortnight than my PS2 got in its first two months.

We're talking about console exclusives. PC or not PC, they're not coming to the PS3, are they?

Where's the list of the tons of third-party PS3 exclusives coming before the end of the year you mentioned, by the way?

I'm not sure they've ever claimed it's anything but an early 2008 release, have they?

There are very few, just as there are very few for the 360. It's just not financially viable for a publisher to stick to one console this generation.

Hence why I said 3rd party titles, not 3rd party exclusives. Basically for the PS3 the list for 2007 is Coded Arms: Assault and Ninja Gaiden: Sigma.

So, we're back to square one then; an almost total lack of killer-apps on the PS3 this year.

Region-free gaming has spoilt me. Out this summer :>

driving a train or smashing a zombies face into the ground. It's a tough one to call that, I mean both are pretty thrilling but perhaps slowing down for a junction just pips it.

I'm not surprised this is coming from a guy with a gamertag.

Shocking isn't it. It's almost as if I like playing online games with my friends. Where will the scandal stop?

Well, correct me if I'm wrong (because it has been known), but this thread was started by someone who owns a PS3, but can't see any big exclusives for the format any time soon. That's how it kicked off, right?

In your wisdom, you've offered up the likes of Lair, Warhawk and Ninja Gaiden Sigma for 2007. How exactly does that prove that he's wrong?

and people need to differentiate between exclusives and exclusives with brand value. I mean it's not like Lair is as big as a brand as Halo, it's not even close in name recognition. Hell even the biggest PS3 "exclusive", MGS4 isn't as big a brand as Halo.

Halo 2 (8 million)

Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)

It's not exactly far off though, is it?

Funnily enough, looking over sales figures, how is it that people claim that the video game industry is at its peak with the highest profits ever, and yet nothing in the last two gens came close to touching SNES / NES games in sales?

Super Mario Bros. (40.23 million)

Super Mario World (17 million)

The PS3 is being marginalised horribly in retailers with really poor shelf space and I cant really see enough exclusives before Christmas. I feel it's really going to take a miracle and a huge price drop to turn this baby around before it hits the iceberg. The shock of the new has worn off off PS3 as a platform, it really needed something that was ahead of the game to justify the price tag and in that respect it has failed. Blueray is a techhead luxury and not a system seller,

and currently there is no real compelling differential to drive sales at its current price. Then we run into the hype of Halo 3 Aug/Sept.....How could this have been cocked up so munumentally...

Interesting, you make it sound like consumers are going to affect the strategy of games retail, rather than games retail pushing the platform(s) that serve them best at consumers. The price will drop and it will be promoted accordingly.

Ive had a PS3 sitting here for two months. It has been turned on for two days.

I have never had such a unused expensive console lying around. I dont play the wii much, but it does get used by others and at least stays plugged in.

When I get quoted PS3 lists, it smacks a little of desperation to me. Sure, the 360 nor the wii have any gob smacking lists either. but 360 wise it has one killer app from me. Halo. I mean for fucks sake, look at how mad people are going over THREE MAPS from an unfinished game. Ive been on it all week, and for me will probably be like Halo 2 and Halo always spinning in my disc drive. If youre not a Halo fan, sure, the 360/PS3 argument is a moot point, one costs more is more reliable, but the other is cheaper and has a wonderful online service. Neither is head and shoulders above the other. Hence the PS3 is nowhere as seductive as it should be. If Sony give me a game that I'll play as many hours or enjoy as much as the AAA game Im expecting from Bungie, go for it. I believe one great game is enough to get a console for me.

The PS2 has an amazing library of games that no other console at its time could match. Or still can.

But the PS3 is showing no indication as of yet of ever reaching that same height of variety, diversity and exclusitivity. Too many things are going wrong and the wrong priorities have been made.

The wii is a bit shit, esp in Europe. But its Nintendo. Love them or hate them, you know no matter how bad or great their console is, they will have some games that no one else ever will and as such as a perfect compliment to any of the other players battling for the same ground.

PS3 until now = Meh.

And thats being totally fair.

And anyone who mentions blu-ray will get 25 gb of fucking fists up their arse. No non mass market formats used in silly arguments. Thanks.

Basically the PS3 is this gens Xbox - more expensive, better hardware made redundant by 3rd parties just porting 360 games, distinctly chunky with a pad that needs to go through a few more revisions.... except it doesn't have halo, the one shining light that made purchase acceotable and pretty much guaranteed it a market share to developers inclined to hedge their bets.

Until (unless) the PS3 find's its Halo - that is a game so amazing it'll spawn a whole community and is far too good for the 360 or Wii to replicate - it is going to fail.

I was doing you a favour by cutting some of those out.

Anyway, I say again, how exactly does that line-up prove him wrong? Especially when you consider that LBL is, as I said, currently listed as a 2008 release.

wouldnt that be the actual on the shelf release and not the psnetwork download?
