ah, can you hear that sound? There, in the distance?

That’s the sound of my caution alarm.

If anyone wants to buy this you can use a jag or MD1 power supply to test it. (9 volts DC 1.2 Amps. Negative center) You also need a game cart.

I wonder if the seller is on the forum?

I don’t think I’d have been disappointed in a Jag back in the day, it had that next gen 2D vibe, some absolute killer FPS in Castle of Wolfenstein, Doom and Alien v Predator. Tempest 2000, Rayman and more. Even when it died it continued getting releases by small devs right into the new millennium and carried a small but passionate following. Think if Atari were not dead on their knees the Jag could have done well. Even a $150m injection by SEGA and free use of their IPs could postpone their fate. There’s probably an alternative universe somewhere where the Jaguar has the only 32bit next gen Sonic running on it.

Believe me, the Jag was disappointing back in the day and AvP was awful even on release.

Launch day with T2k is up there with the best launches ever…..I have epic memories of playing that in my college years, I’d take a Jag with T2k over a PS3 with any/all of the exclusives ;) (Jag has a better pad as we know)

I mean the rest of it was shite albeit I recall have some fun with a few other games but nothing that stands out all these years later

Soooooooo picked up a Jaguar and a bunch of cartridges today and of the few cartridges I've played so far (Tempest, Wolfenstein and Skiing) I've really enjoyed it! I had one about five years ago and probably didn't play it as much as i should. I'm quite looking forward to getting into the consoles catalogue, even though I know there are some shockers. I left Kasumi Ninja behind as well...yeah. Tempest is incredibly fun.

Need to get a copy of Sensible Soccer and Fever Pitch Soccer next as I've never played either of them on the console.

So what's the general consensus on Checkered Flag? I went into it with low expectations but actually found myself having a lot of fun with it. Once you get used to the controls, it's actually a hell of a lot of fun. Extremely fast and taking corners is extremely satisfying. There's definitely a few negatives such as the way the car moves when you hit a wall or another car but you always feel you can get back into the race. Really happy with it!

I mean, compared to the MD version of Virtua racing? Which cost £70 at launch and has a DSP on board?

it’s better, but compared to the 32x version it’s worse.

we don’t talk about the Saturn port.

at least it’s not club drive…

I’d argue teh MD VR is a much better game than checkered flag, looks better & plays better - it may even play better than the 32x version :o

I think I paid something odd for CF like £1.99 back in the EB days clearing all the stuff out, I felt robbed….

I'll give the MD version of Virtua Racing a go as currently don't have a 32x. Just out of curiosity, what was wrong with the Saturn port?

I've just played Checkered Flag again and once again, had a great time. Maybe just one of those games you like which other people aren't so sure about.

How much do the rotary controllers go for these days? I have one that was modded by Jonathan Ascough that I haven't really used. I was thinking of putting it together in a little package with my sealed copy of T2K.

IIRC it was given to a third-party developer (Time Warner?) rather than converted in-house by Sega, who made a bit of a pig's ear of it, and wasn't exactly impressive given the host hardware was more powerful than the MD and 32X. Never actually played it myself, admittedly.

I used to own a copy, but it's been a long while. It's developed by Time Warner instead of in-house at Sega and has loads of new courses and vehicles, so it should be an amazing port. Somehow it's not though. The presentation is really dull - there's none of the cool options screens and sounds of the arcade version and the new courses have boring designs and graphics. It's a perfectly competent port, in many respects, but it just feels dull and lifeless. As a Saturn owner, you wouldn't pick it over Daytona USA or Sega Rally (or even Manx TT, which I've personally always loved, but I know gets some hate).

The problem with Virtua Racing on Saturn was it isn’t Virtua Racing. The handling is all wrong. The Megadrive version was a more faithful recreation and that is unforgivable. To their credit though, Time Warner did add more content to flesh out the game. Something Sega should have done for their arcade to console ports. Manx TT in particular is their worst offender. 1 fucking track! They were taking the piss.

Two fucking tracks, to be fair. Although they both share a small stretch.
