Late to the Bloc Party

As ever, I have found out about the 'hot new band!' literally ages after everyone else. This is usually down to me only buying unknown quantities in the sales. Which is what I did; I bought Silent Alarm on play.com as it's only a fiver (use the affiliate linkz lol!) and I'm pretty much in love, now.

Anyway, what other albums of theirs should I get?

I thought 'Silent Alarm' was OK (despite all the songs sounding pretty much identical), but their new album ('A Weekend In The City') is just awful. One of the few albums I've ever listened to with an intensifying curl in my lip; it's absolute tripe.

They've only done those two albums, I think.

I wouldn't necessarily trust my opinion, I'm generally not particularly into indie bands. If you really liked 'Silent Alarm', you might like their other stuff – I thought it was OK at best.

However, indie albums I've bought and enjoyed recently: Maximo Park: 'Our Earthly Pleasures', Mr Hudson & The Library: 'A Tale of Two Cities'.

If you're looking for indie, check out the Rumble Strips. They haven't released a full album yet - just EPs - but they're among the most infectiously catchy and fun bands I've heard for ages. I've seen them live twice, and they're brilliant.

Great singles, mind. Or is it just me?

Incidentally, as well as Silent Alarm, the new album is also £5 on Play. Which says a lot about the reception it has received.

Can't remember which songs were the singles. I liked 'Two More Years', but that isn't on either album.

I enjoyed Silent Alarm, though it does tail off a bit towards the end. A Weekend in the City is 'alright' and the remix album is a bit hit-and-miss but if you like Silent Alarm it's worth picking up for a fiver just to see what you make of it. There's some good re-imaginings and some dull ones too.

Indie stuff? Spoon are worth a shout - "A series of snakes" or "Kill the moonlight".

Also, another shout for Interpol. Fantastic band and either of their albums are worth picking up.

Modest mouse also. Their new one, "We were dead before the ship even sank" is pretty accessible and might be a good place to start with them...or not.

I absolutely love A Weekend In The City, and much prefer it to Silent Alarm. I have however been incredibly dissapointed with every live performance I've seen on TV.

I saw them live yesterday at Oxegen, really energetic and worked the crowd well. The music was great and was more like a dance party than a rock show.

I'd put that show up next to Muse's show the night before which is saying something.

Better live than on CD.

You can file me in the 'thought Silent Alarm was average but Weekend In The City is bloody brilliant' category as well.

Seems that Silent Alarm is more an album for the snobs. If you're a snob, don't bother with AWITC. If you're not, you'll probably quite enjoy it.

Er... we like Silent Alarm because it's quite simply far better. There's nothing snobby about it at all. If anything, it's the opposite - Silent Alarm is way more tuneful and has better melodies. Surely a snob would prefer the less listener-friendly AWITC?

Silent Alarm was wonderful - always going to be a hard one to follow up (a bit like Arcade Fire's Funeral).

However I can't understand all the hate for A Weekend In the City. Overall its not on the same level (more an 7 out of 10 than a 9 like Silent Alarm) but still ...

True, but its the lyrical clangers that make it feel much worse.

I didn't like Silent Alarm a great deal because it really didn't live up to the promise of the demos and early EP. The original version of She's Hearing Voices was astounding. Banquet and Little Thoughts were definite highlights before they were sanitised a bit too.

The second album is a bit overproduced, and rather eclipsed by the somewhat similar TV on the Radio too, at least for me. Great singles band though, I agree.
