Late to the Bloc Party

Kele was no Shakespeare on the first album - but compared to the vast majority of the dross out there I don't find myself cringing.

Yes the lyrical content is similar, but at least on Silent Alarm he fitted in any half arsed social/political statement in with the rhythm of the song rather than going.

The Daily Mail says the enemies amongst us..blah blah...

It just really doesnt go with high tempo drumming and punchy guitars. At least when he was talking bollocks on Silent Alarm it had a sense of aggression and urgency, See Helicopter and Luno. He sort of accepted the lyrics weren't up to much and let the music compensate, with the second album its almost as if he's gone to the band,

"Look guys I've written some lyrics on the xenophobic hate spouted by the right ring broadsheets in the light of the 7/7 bombings, reckon you could make a nice catchy riff to sum that for me?"

Going to see them in December, hope they don't play any of the duff tracks of it.

I prefer the CD EP to either of the albums tbh. The Answer is one of the best records I've heard in recent years, the last minute and a half is just outstanding. Silent Alarm has its moments but is overproduced, and I couldn't get on with Weekend in the City at all.

I can't stand Kele, I can't stand Russell and his idiotic fringe. I do however really like the dual-lead stuff like the Banquet riff and the end bit of The Answer. They also have the best drummer in the business, imo.

That changes my feelings on the Killers - although I have to say as much as I love their first one Sam's Town is even better.

The soundtrack to my uni was REM's Automatic for the People. And you reckon yours was depressing ?

I think he's trying to be too clever by half - but you're quoting from Hunting for Witches which makes a shiver go down my spine.

I heard some track a few days back which sounded a bit pants - nice beat but Kele is using that stupid voice thing that Cher did and that Bob Mould almost sunk his last solo album with. Please tell me they've not turned into a dance act ...

I love the guitar on Hunting from Witches, but some of the lyrics are absolutely awful.

And the track you're referring to is Flux. Its a bit meh.

All Bloc Party's best songs are either about nothing (Helicopter, Banquet) or about drugs (Prayer). Actually, I should've never looked at the lyrics to the former two. What a disaster. Still, doesn't stop them from being awesome songs though.

I really like Flux... until Kele starts singing. His melodies are becoming more and more generic. Bleh.

Some would suggest that Helicopter is about something, namely Western culture, America and George Dubya.

I don't know what it's about personally.

Yeah, but even I can write Kele-esque lyrics that appear to be political/social commentary the US.

(To be sung with shouty Kele vocals)

Cheeseburgers, Time Square, New York Stock Exchange!

Marlboro Lights, Kentucky, Female Black President!

Left, Right, Left, Right, Assembly Line Production!

We're not going to make it! x 4

That's a Bloc Party classic right there.

Doo doo doo... DOO DOO DOOO-DOOOOO

Doo doo doo.... DOO DOO DOOO-DOOOO

Spot it in every new Bloc Party song. The exact same shouted high bit.

-------------0 0 0---

-------------------0-

------0--------------

---0-----------------

0--------------------

As illustrated above. Which is getting rather repetitive.

For a second there I thought that was part of Helicopter. You should be their lyricist <_<

Does anyone write music that's similar to them then? I would say it's pretty unique at the moment but I might be entirely wrong.

Franz Ferdidnand's first album is kind of similar. With the same sort of 'angular' guitar pop with completely irrevalent but catchy lyrics.

I listened to Silent Alarm yesterday for the first time in ages and really enjoyed it. Its a class album.

I like Silent Alarm but Weekend in the City isn't up to much, the only two songs I like are The Prayer and SXRT

I hated it at first but i have crackdown to thank for me loving it now. I used it as a custom soundtrack once while orb hunting and have been listening to it ever since!

Good god man. Wrongfax ahoy.

I can kind of see where you're aiming at, but you're all wrong.

Maximo Park, Kubichek! and Rakes sound like Bloc Party.

Foals sound like Christmas Morning with Jessica Alba and a kilo of coke for breakfast.

The first time I heard Hummer I thought that it was by Bloc Party.

I'm pretty big into Maximo Park already but I wouldn't compared them at all really, I still think bloc party are pretty unique though.

I'll give rakes a try and maybe kubichek.

You've never heard the Rakes??

Go check them out now! Capture/Release is one of the best indie albums in recent times.

I can't say I've ever heard the similarity between Foals and Bloc Party but I understand where you're coming from.

But Foals are in a different league already. I love Silent Alarm, it's one of my favourite debut LPs, but Foals are just phenomenally tight, articulate and monstrously energetic.
