It’s women’s tennis. Who knows what her or Fernandez’s career might be like. Unlike the men’s, it’s astonishingly flat with anyone beating anyone else on their day and multiple teen grand slam champions who then wait years for their next shot.

I think it's really embarrassing that the US Open make a big deal of handing the cheque over. No other major sporting event does this.  It's so lacking in class.  They even mention JP Morgan to add a further layer of cringeworthyness.  It should be about lifting the trophy, and the cheque presentation gets in the way and distracts from it. It's not a gameshow FFS!

hahaha the thing that stuck in my head was the "Now someone from JP Morgan, head of asset management, will hand you a cheque".... like, urgh.

True, but I was more talking about a sustained career in the top 10/20/30 rather than necessarily accumulating 20 slams. I don't think there are all that many examples of female players winning one of the major tournaments at a young age and then wholly disappearing. You don't even need to actually win much really! Sabalenka is world no. 2, and was briefly no. 1, and has been winning exactly one singles WTA 1000 title a year so far. Clearly there are always risks - obviously serious injury apart from anything else - but I do think they might be preferable to the risks involved in letting the tabloids turn her into the next Rooney. Both Raducanu and Fernandez have such ridiculously proficient all-court games that I really doubt either is going to disappear back into obscurity if they focus on their talent rather than other distractions.

 

Also, the relative competitiveness of men's and women's tennis is at least as much down to the 5 vs 3 set slams as the field. Men's ATP 1000/500 tournaments are far more open, and especially in more recent years since the traditional top 3 started to pick and choose more. Djokovic would have been knocked out of the French Open twice over this year (Musetti, Tsitsipas) if it was a 3 set event! Rublev is world #7 and hasn't won anything above an ATP 500.

Amazing tennis on display last night from both players, it was truly brilliant. Emma is a deserving champion and instant superstar, she seems like she has a good team behind her to keep her focused, she's going to need that close support when our disgusting press decide to start publishing bullshit about her. And yeah the US Open is particularly unclassy in handing over cheques before the trophy, no other Grand Slam does that...

I still think Leicester was far more crazy than this. I'm not downplaying it, but that was a full squad of players who massively overachieved as opposed to one person.

At that time US women were paid $28 per diem during the US championships.  Players of other nationalities were financially supported far more generously, despite being officially amateur.

Some really quite horrible shots from Djokovic at times here. 

I don’t think I’ve ever seen him hit as many unforced errors when he’s in control of the point.

Its that he’s not able to chase balls he’d normally chase - that last point in medvedevs service game, for example.
