hmm
Barty is just fantastic. Glad that Collins gave her a match at least but this could never go any other way. 44 years! Fingers crossed that we might see the nearly identical Wimbledon home win record fall in the summer, though I think it's a lot more likely that Barty takes that one too. Wallpaper
The first set was a blowout but after that it could have gone either way at any point but now deep in the forth Medvedev is looking like he’s having to start to hang on mentally to win it. Yeah, he looked steely during Auger-Aliassime game but he’s looking proper disconcerted atm. Rafa’s been closing the gap since the second set. Killing it atm. Minion
This match is insane, can't believe Rafa has stuck in there amazing, heartbreaking if he loses which after that long timeout between sets 4 and 5 I reckon will happen.

Miner Willy
I had to get on a train at 2-0 Medvedev. Didn't see any way Nadal would even get a set at that point. Gutted to have missed this.

Gutted to have missed this. It was an amazing fight back. He starting playing flatter on both wings when needed and drew Medvedev from side to side all throughout the 4th, he physically overwhelmed him whilst also playing precise tennis, it was really something! Medvedev did come back stronger in the fifth after a long break but Rafa found a way even after being broken for 5-5. What an incredible match, one to remember for sure. hmm
Extraordinary. Just sheer fucking determination won him that. Well, maybe a ridiculous amount of skill too, but mostly complete refusal to accept defeat. He looked exhausted somewhere around 2 hours in, and then goes on to do that. I don't think the GOAT debate is interesting, but I think I know which I want to watch out of this or Djokovic grinding out another slam. Still highly likely that Medvedev will finish the year as no. 1, and it's thoroughly deserved. I'm a pretty big fan of his too, and I'd have been happy to see him take it, but he just lacked a little bit of self-belief and guile today. Bit disappointed to see another crowd on his back so much, but that he nearly overcame that animosity again speaks volumes about him. Incredible match overall. Hard to believe it was well over 5 hours because it flew by.

skondo
Didn’t see all of this, but was somewhat disheartened after the first set. Checked my phone later to see that Rafa had lost the second set. Well that’s it then. Checked my phone much later to see Rafa is 3-2 up in the fifth. Abandoned what I was doing as I had to watch it. Scared the hell out of me, but what a fantastic result for Rafa. Such a great champion.

hmm
Yeah, he always comes across so well, and that's why I don't get why the crowd treatment often tips over into hostility. It's one thing having some of the pantomime villain thing going on - and he's certainly played into that at times - but here (a bit) and in NY (a lot) it's gone beyond that. Hell murray has come off second fiddle to federer at Wimbledon. if he’d turned up against Djokovic he’d be the crowd favourite…

fat flatulent git
What the fuck? https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-60843870 Barty is retiring at the age of 25.
hmm
Came to post the same thing, in much the same tone! I do get it, and even admire it, in some respects though - like, what else is she going to achieve now, besides chasing Court's record or other fairly arbitrary milestones? She's been absolutely dominant for 3 years, won everything she ever dreamed of winning, and maybe continuing that for another few just isn't that interesting to her. She already quit tennis once, under different circumstances but for some of the same reasons, I reckon: she simply doesn't have that relentless, unconditional desire to compete that you see in, say, the traditional men's top 3. And I think that's partly because she's so good that in a way, despite how much work she's undoubtedly put in, it's actually come quite easy to her. In other news, turns out that Nadal had a fairly good excuse for losing the Indian Wells final: the maniac was playing with a fractured rib (and still nearly took it to a third set!) https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/mar/22/rafael-nadal-rib-stress-fracture-tennis
Miner Willy
Yeah, shocking, but seems well thought out when you read the comments. She'll be sorely missed, but best of luck to her.
merman
Fair play to Barty. There are a lot of sports people who never know when to quit for the best.
