After being left a bit.... um.... not unimpressed, more uninspired by the Forza 3 demo, I've made up my mind to give GT5 a go when it eventually reaches Europe (I'm not convinced March 2010 will see a world wide release).

Evidently it still has its faults, but the more I see of it, the more I start to like it. It's such a small, petty detail, but the way the speed sensitive spoiler on the Mercedes goes up and down is really cool.

Really? Just take a look at the nudge at 1m35s. Newton would turn over in his grave.

Yeah, as I said, it still has its faults. Particularly when compared to playing Forza 3 in cockpit view (before I gave it up as a bad lot and returned to the ol' faithful that is bonnet cam) where I lost control and spun the vehicle into a wall which just felt frighteningly real.

Apart from that, the depiction of driving just seems to 'look' right in the GT5 videos. More so than Forza 3 to my eye. But of course, when we're finally able to get our hands on the controls and try the game for ourselves, there is the possibility that it might just feel totally wrong. The lack of a true sensation of speed when in any of the driving views I've seen is but one area that's giving me cause for concern.

On the positive side, the graphics speak for themselves and roll-over, night-day cycles, weather effects and improved physics and enhanced AI are currently rumoured for the title. It certainly seems to be heading in the right direction and is now, potentially, an attractive future purchase.

Hmm indeed. It can't though.

Bizarre said that with PGR4. If the game features basic textures (ala Midnight Club) its doable but to do the realistic textures properly lit poses issues.

Wasn't the lack of storage space on DVD the issue with PGR4 though? With the space available on Blu-Ray at their disposal, maybe this won't be a problem for Polyphony.

that + less grinding in the beginning & I might start to get tempted (again, since GT3)

Otherwise I'm having way too much fun right now with the unpolished but underrated NFS Shift

Really? Can't remember it in PGR2 & GT3. Never owned GT4.

Still pretty cool though, no matter who did it first.

:D

yeah the Enzo and Porsche's Turbo and Boxster definitely did it in PGR2 and the Cadillac Cien and Chrysler Crossfire did it in GT Concept Tokyo/Geneva. i'm sure there were others that escape me at present too.

Weather and Day/Night Cycles

Yamauchi: “We can implement it, but we don’t know whether we will put it in or not. Even for damage, it only took us two months to get it where we’re at, and if we really wanted to, we could enter time changes and stuff like that, but it really depends on how it will affect the quality of the game.” –via IGN

On Gameblog's TGS podcast released today (linked below), journalist JulienC, who made the Polyphony Digital studio tour video and Kazunori Yamauchi's 30-minute video interview (yet unreleased), claimed he saw GT5 night races and rain races (both features were not supposed to be in GT5 in the first place) in the studio. Also, GT producer told JulienC that Polyphony have 3-4 months left to complete the damage feature which is a big work for them since they want to make something that is really different from the other games. Damage will be full scale and real time processed, it will be more precise and each impact deformation will be calculated hence unique

I'm getting a bit fed up with GTs half assed attempts at this. We've had rain racing before but with only two cars. Surely the PS3 can do a bit better without too much difficulty? Sometimes I wish they'd stop setting the graphics bar so high and just develop the feature list a bit more.

Blimey. I don't remember that.
Neither do I. I remember the wet track (no rain?) but not the two car scenario.

I remember. It was only available in 2-player multiplayer as a wet track. No rainfall involved. Looked lovely at the time though.
