Also announcement of massive contention:

The new property id Software executives have repeatedly hinted towards is named Rage, co-founder and programmer John Carmack revealed at today's QuakeCon festivities.
While id maintained its typical stance that the title will ship "when it's done," the company did reveal that the PlayStation 3 edition of Rage will arrive on one Blu-ray disc, whereas the other three versions--PC, Mac, Xbox 360--will come on two DVDs with a potential Blu-ray distribution for compatible systems. Through the game's use of the recently unveiled id Tech 5, which CEO Todd Hollenshead claims will run equally well on any hardware platform, all four versions of Rage are targeted to run at 60 frames per second.

Wow, proper return to form for id.

That Rage game looks pretty incredible (check out the integrated trailer on www.shacknews.com), graphically one of the most 'solid' looking titles I've seen .. ever, I think. And all the other stuff? Brilliant! id seem to be back! :)

Amazing scenes.

That Steam pack is a serious bargain. I wonder how well the old DOS-based stuff works.

The various DS/Wii/mobile news is promising too, although weirdly Carmack seems to be (erroneously in my view) pushing for extra hardware power on mobile where it's not needed, while at the same time under-utilising the DS (2.5D engine).

And a Wolfenstein film from the Silent Hill guys should be interesting.

Quake 3 was the last really good game they made, though in fairness it was and still is the best online shooter ever made so it would wrong to be too harsh on them. Not quite sure what to make about Rage, really need to see how it plays before making any sort of fair judgement.

I hope Q3 sees a bit of a resurgence now that it's on Steam, I guess part of the 'problem' is the people still playing are bloody good for the most part which isn't going to be particularly appealing to any newbies giving the game a go for the first time.

Surely the complete lack of a mouse for weapons like the rail gun, and for skills like strafe jumping and rocket jumping means that this Q3 will be rather neutered. You just can't turn fast enough on a pad.

Maybe there could be a look-behind button or summat... I know, sounds pants. I wouldn't mind using a Phantom Lapboard with this though...

They could just include mouse support, I guess. Wouldn't be a problem if they allow hosted games to take control method into account.

They could probably make a macro for rocket jumping, the rail gun would be no fun at all on a pad though.
