Anyone else see the Comics Britannia documentary last night? Pretty good, although needed more 2000AD and less Viz.

I remember one storyline when Dredd went to the moon because there was a zombie version of him on a mad killing spree.

Dredd had a little arab judge friend for that one. He wore a little red fez. He died in some sort of explosion and Dredd was totally unemotional about it, he just got on with stopping the zombie dredd.

I started buying 2000ad again about a year ago (originally stopped around prog 500) and I'm loving it. I really look forward to Wednesdays and half an hour or so in the evening reading through it.

Some of the artwork is jaw droppingly good at the moment.

I need to get back into 2000AD. There was a point where I lost all faith in it and stopped buying it. This could be the recommendation I need!

I dreamed I was in a newsagent last night and I bought the latest Judge Dredd Megazine (is that still going?) and 2000AD. 2000AD was 71p (!) and the Megazine was £1.70 which may be an insight into how long it is since I bought one. Then I was instantly transported to a bookshop where I bought the second volume of Nemesis, because Dream-me had already got volume 1.

This is clearly a sign that I need to start buying 2000AD again. And I haven't even watched Monday's Comics Britannia yet.

I've just realised this is the first 2000AD I've ever bought for myself. My grandad used to buy it for me until he died in 1994 (I was married by then, and I think he was looking for an excuse to stop). He took over buying it for me in the mid-80s from my other grandad, who'd been buying it for me since the first issue of Starlord. Nearly 30 years ago!

This has made me feel a bit sad. <_<

I remember deciding at the time not to bother carrying on with it, as I felt like I was finally growing out of it (IIRC it was around the time of Mechanismo which was quite silly/disappointing compared to previous Dredd epics), and the arrival of the Dredd movie made my mind up for me.

So last night I read my first 2000AD since 1994. It was a strangely emotional experience. It brought back lots of childhood/teenage/young adulthood memories. And coincidentally, the first thing I read was Tharg's message which starts with a sentence about older readers coming back after drifting away. It felt like it was aimed at me, unless he writes that every week on the off chance! Tharg's changed a bit too - I'm sure he didn't used to have pointy ears or such a scowly expression. They should bring back the photo-Tharg we all remember from the good old days.

I enjoyed the Dredd story, which I found easy to get into. It was ticking along quite nicely and then one of the characters talked about going to "Santa Kylie" and "Wannabe", and suddenly the old magic was back.

The story about fighting aliens (can't remember the name) didn't do much for me. It seemed like a mythology-less Slaine, and Slaine never did much for me in the first place. The problem might be coming in halfway through though, as I enjoyed some of the lines.

I always used to love ABC Warriors (and Nemesis, and Ro-Busters before both of them) but judging by this one episode alone, it seems to have become quite self-indulgent. It seemed like an excuse for some late 70s/early 80s style heavy metal album art, and not much else. Again though, it doesn't help that I'm picking it up halfway through so I might be doing it a huge disservice.

Caballistics and Button Man were both new to me (I think the first series of Button Man had just started when I stopped reading) but I thought they were both great, and unlike the other two stories, very easy to get into at the random point I was joining. Caballistics felt quite Zenith-y which is always a good thing in my book.

I think I'll definitely keep reading over the next few weeks and see how it goes. I'm hoping the two stories which haven't really clicked with one episode will start to work for me, or at least when they finish and something else starts I'll be able to follow that properly.

I also read the first half of the Megazine. The Dredd story was pretty good (PJ Maybe becomes Mayor of Mega City 1 under a false identity) and is presumably the set-up for all kinds of future fun and games. I wasn't so impressed with the Judge Anderson story (but again, coming in halfway through etc.) and judging by the letters page I'm not alone, but I did like the massive blast from the past appearance of Krong (complete with asterisk and "*see Prog 5" footnote. Prog 5!) I was a bit disappointed that the Megazine is so text-heavy. It feels like half of the pages are interviews, reviews, or other articles. I'd rather they had much less of this and made room for another story. I haven't read the rest yet but I will, and I'll probably get next month's too, especially as a new Dredd story will be starting. But overall I'm less impressed with this so far than I am with 2000AD so I can see why Stilly stopped buying it.

So for now at least, I'm back on board! Expect lots of questions from me over the next few weeks and months as I try to fill in the blanks from all my years away.

Unfortunately you've returned to AD mid-story. Might be worth you ordering the last 4 or 5 progs for when the current stories began, or failing that I can send you mine.

Stone Island (the aliens) is the second chapter in and it took a huge twist during the first chapter. I won't say any more (unless you want me to) because it's been a pretty good story to date.

ABC Warriors has been drawn like this for some time, and basically the Warriors are on a journey and as they're travelling they're all recalling their experiences of the Volgan War, when Blackblood was (still is??) the enemy and there were huge battles.

Button Man hasn't been in AD for a few years - he was a hired killer in 'the game' - paid a load of money by unseen hirers to fight other 'button men'. This current story is slightly different...

From what my haphazard memory can recall:

The first chapter started with a guy going to a rough-as-arseholes prison, tries to fit in etc (can't remember much of the details) then it turns out an alien race has targeted earth for invasion via (I think) double-Y chromosome men (where you apparently find a lot in crims and therefore prison) - the aliens literally use YY blokes to get to earth by transforming them into aliens or making them into a gateway. The 2 aliens speaking English in this weeks AD were men but didn't entirely transform for some reason thus they're on the side of the humans. Anyway, in this chapter some humans and those half alien/humes have used the original guy from prison who is now a brain-dead gateway to the alien's planet, and they're planning to destroy it with some poison bomb thing.

The Megazine has lots of articles in because, to put it bluntly, they're cheaper to run than another strip. Sadly, 2000AD doesn't operate on a huge budget. Some of the text articles are interesting and relevant, others not so (I could live without the movie reviews, which simply are of no relevance to me, except for me to see which old shite is out in the sci-fi and horror genres which I'm not going to watch).

The Meg's apparently going to get better soon, because the editor has nearly finished using up the backlog of material he inherited, and he'll be able to do what he wants with it. He also edits the weekly, which has been ace for the last year, so it seems promising.

Yeah, I was very impressed with 2000AD overall, and I'm happy to assume that my problems with a couple of the stories are more to do with coming in halfway through rather than a reflection of their quality. If the Megazine can achieve similar standards then it will be a very good read indeed.

Anyway. I've ordered 2000AD from the newsagents this morning to come with the paper. I'm getting it delivered again!

2000AD related due to the artist & writer creators: I'm currently about 1/2-way through Watchmen. It's an absolutely fantastic read, so brilliantly written by Alan Moore and the artwork is great too. I'm up to where Rorschach

has been caught and unmasked, and his psychoanalyst is starting to go mad as the therapy unearths more and more about the guy.
