NFL/NCAA American Football – Thread for experts and newcomers alike

I went to the game and whilst it was an entertaining event the quality of the game was shockingly poor. Having an average Giants team mostly outclass the hapless Dolphins will not be remembered for the actual game played.

If they are to return for another game the NFL needs to send a marquee team such as New England or Indianapolis, though they would probably crush what is left of a league that is suffering from very average teams right now.

I also read how much blame was leveled at the playing surface cutting up and being generally too soft as to why the game was poor. The problem, in my opinion, is the conservative nature of NFL play these days.

The organization was good and the event well staged, kudos to to getting Terry on the field to receive abuse from the fans, that was much appreciated.

I would say that if they provided that level of play on a regular basis then the attendances would fall quite quickly but I enjoyed the day and I finally got to see a game after watching the sport since the mid Eighties.

Yup, I really enjoyed it. One of the highlights was at the very beginning. They brought out Martin Johnson, everyone cheered. Next up, John Terry with the loudest booing ever. Then Lewis Hamilton, big cheer.

Half time entertainment was shocking - that marching band were fucking RUBBISH.

Killing the game with two minutes left pissed me off too.

without trawling through the thread, how has this game ended up in the UK ?? The adverts I've seen through the game kinda infers a sponsered series ????

Oh and not quite that high scoring game - but get Dermot Olearly at half time. He knew his stuff and for some reason I was really surprised!!!!

Didn't Dermot used to present a Yankee Footy game on E4 or something? Might even have been the Superbowl coverage a few years back

I don't know if any of your here read the Dubious Quality blog, if not you missed out on some great links to two crazy plays in college football. You can find them here.

Thats hilarious. The commentators sound like they are going to have a heart attack.

Would have been even funnier if he had run out of bounds just before the end-zone :(

  • 1 month later...

Game of the season (decade?) today. Giants nearly beat the pats.... pats came through to be the first team ever to go 16-0 in the regular season. Amazing scenes.

And I've been pleasantly surprised by the Bolts... got playoff tickets for next weekend, now just waiting to see if it'll be the titans or the browns. Jets fan at heart, but supporting the local team as long as I'm here. First ever playoff game next weekend, woot!

Anyone else been watching this last couple of months? Crazy season all round, but especially from the pats.... man is Bill B pissed.

I've been watching consistantly for about a month, having no previous knowledge of the game. It's pretty fun, and not as stop start as I was led to believe.

Stayed up and watched the first half last night of the Giants Patriots game. Very entertaining, especially since the Giants had nothing to play for other than be party poopers.

The structure of the Play-offs and who you end up with is quite confusing though. I've picked a random team to follow (Steelers).

I'm a bit shocked by the effort the Cowboys have been putting into their game since winning the NFCE, it's like they don't even care. It is kinda disturbing knowing they have a playoff game in 2 weeks and that they basically shut it down 3 weeks ago :D

Agreed. On the other hand, since winning the NFCE, they haven't had to put any effort in. It'd be nice if they did, certainly, but so long as they come out strong for the playoffs, I won't be complaining.

Shame about First Down. I know I can get free coverage online, but I'll only really look at Cowboys news. With First Down, there was the columns, the reports on every game, British coverage, all the miscellaneous stuff I won't get when I look online. Does anyone read Pro Football Weekly? My local Borders stocks it, and I'd like to have something to replace First Down.

Just look at the Colts in the past (not last year), the Chargers last year and a few other teams who has done it, they've all come out flat in the playoffs. I fully expect them to make the SB if they don't then the heat should be on Phillips for letting his team get to comfortable

I havent as we dont have borders but i am also in need of an NFL related magazine.

Anyway what about the Pats going 16-0, Brady beating Mannings TD record and Randy Moss beating Jerry Rices record ( )? Crazy stuff, heard a snippet of an interview with a the 14-0 dolphins team and they sounded a bit miffed tbh.

Remember that Rice's record was during the strike season, i.e. he did not play (or at least caught no TDs) in weeks 4 to 6, and the season was reduced to 15 games, which means he did it in TWELVE games. He's still the man. Moss just show boats. He *cluld* be the man, and has the tools, but is just too up himself.

Yeah? I was still pretty young so dont remember much of that stuff just that the Montana (and later Young) and Rice were amazing to watch

They'd better make the SB. I'm sick of waiting. I just wish they could have done it before they got that egoist Owens. Still, he seems to have settled down a little this year. I think I heard him mention doing something 'for the team' rather than just spout his usual 'we don't need 11 people - just put me out there. I'll win the game for us. I'm GOD'.

They also do a pdf version for $5. On the downside, they only publish 30 times a year, I think.

meh look at all the drama Philly had this year they wanted to run "St Donovan" out of town at one point after his stupid HBO interview where he tried to explain away his bad play by pulling out the race card. I'm not convinced TO was the problem there 2 years ago. Anything the guy does gets blown out of proportion by the media cause of what took place in Philly but there's really nothing you can fault him for since coming to Dallas.

I have no faith in the Bucks they're 9-7 in a division so bad any other NFC playoff team would easily sweep it, 5 of their 9 wins are over NFCS teams so out of the 10 games they played against non division teams they're only 4-6 that's not really very good.

the Jags are just built for playing in January more so then the steelers but if the steelers stop the run in this game they win i think this will be the closest of all the games this weekend it's really a coin flip
