.::: I'm guessing/hoping the smoke is going to be used as the effects in-game. Basically every punch and kick won't be an explosion, but this. Then they go overboard with any Super Combo's and Parry's like they are seemingly doing in that trailer.

God, I'm already drooling at the thought of a front-end in that style... (Yeah, I've got a fetish for that, CvsS was beyond sexy in that respect.)

Alot of the new characters in III were quite similar to characters in II if I remember, as fighting styles went. There was a boxer, someone with stretchy limbs, someone who electrified etc.

Though they didn't necessarily play that similarly - the electrifying person was also the stretchy-limned one, for example. But yes, most fit to pre-existing archetypes (so you could see that by Third Strike there were both Ibuki and Chun-Li filling in the nippy, jumpy category, both Dudley and Makoto taking the non-throw-based close-combat roles - though all four characters play very differently), just with their own twists. The system was a bigger change, with the slower-pace and parries moving the game away from the direction Alpha had taken (and taking away the associated dominance of ranged and speed-based characters that existed at least at the (low) level that I played)

Still, it'll be interesting to see what characters we get (somewhat disappointed to see Ryu and Ken still there, but I suppose they're rather locked into the franchise).

While I hate always-awesome japanese CGI being used to sell always-shit japanese gameplay, I love that whole watercolour thing it's got going on. Maybe the game itself will bear some resemblance, but I'm pretty sure it'll at least be mega fun at the very least.

And people shouldn't worry about competition-level play so much, it's not like there's anything that changes skill levels beyond the amount of time you spend thashing and being thrashed by your mates anyway.

3D graphics but 2D gameplay, perhaps?

Almost certainly.

Creating and storing the amount of animation of equivalent quality in 2D (ie anti-aliased masks in HD) would be expensive and prohibitive, and ultimately not look as good as a stylised 3D one would.

Those watercolour splashes should absolutely be in the final product. Or not so final, or whatever.

Actually, hold on - maybe they should break from the mould - make it like Burnout Revenge and a bit of Fable - you create your own characters, choose a fighting style then travel around the world, looking to challenge people or save people out of sticky situations with your superior fighting skills. Every fight moulds your player in some way - you would get visible scars and so on.

I'm so glad you don't have a job at capcom.

Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god.

This comes the week I was thinking about how amazing a new, fourth street fighter would be. I am so looking forward to amazing looking parries and uber-high res sprites (please pleaaseokrsoejkr).

This is a joke post right? Because it's fucking hilarious! Stylised 3D looking better as high quality HD 2D graphics.... of course I'm talking strictly within the contexts of a beat-em-up.. but still, good joke.

2D, hand-drawn sprites from Udon, very high-quality... Capcom aren't stupid enough to fuck with Street Fighter in 3D, of course Arika were majoratively responsible for that, but I like to think that Capcom can recognise what a massive fucking failure the 3D on a 2D plane idea was.

No joke.

You simply wouldn't be able to fit the required resolution of 2D frames in sufficient quantities in the memory of the machines on the market today. You'll get miles more bang for proverbial buck by using 3D.

Ok lets get our balls on the table and start betting some bollock. Its going to be stylish 3D (probably with 2D gameplay).

Guys... Viewtiful Joe was stylised 3D in a 2D plane. It was by Capcom. It looked AMAZING. It can totally be done. I'd rather Capcom didn't take the risk, though :)

Certainly I can imagine UDON would rather not rely on a programming team getting cel-shaded motion blur to look like something they've designed. Especially not if they can just draw something, scan it in, photoshop it and put it in the game.

Of course you could. Two large sprites? Why not?

He's right, but he's thinking of using bitmaps which would come to about half a meg per frame.

I'm certain that whatever the 360 uses for compressed textures would be fine for that amount of stuff. It's not like it has to be massively lossy, but as it'll get anti-aliased anyway it's useless to demand lossless images. It can be done, I'm sure.

Of course it can. How else would it be possible for them to make SF2 HD Remix-thingy?

SPOOOOOOGE

Are there any screens of that video? I can't watch it at work.

Much as I would prefer high-res 2D, I don't think we can dismiss 3D. Arika made a mess of it, sure, but Capcom themselves nailed it with Rival Schools - they just needed to develop it a touch more, and slap a different name on the box.
