.::: If they'd go 3D, they'd be stupid to Tekkenfy it again. Which is basically what happened with EX. I think 2.5D is certainly possible, and in some ways preferable. They just need to kick ol'Auntie Realism out again and make sure it's SF first and whatever the hell the dumb mainstream 'wants'* later.

*: The mainstream usually only wants whatever is deemed hot anyway.

Yeah, they were inherently different games, proper SF and EX.

The fact of the matter is, it just doesn't look good in 3D. Try to think of Ryu, photo-realistic for a moment - even as a massive Street Fighter fan, to me it's laughable - same as when you see the Chun Li cosplayers at various gaming events, even if they get the costume correct, they still look ridiculous. Kayin Amoh, Blobcat and myself spent a while walking around the cosplay area at TGS this year, and there were several Felicia's and Lilith/Morrigan's, and although some were hot (hell, they were attractive women that were half-naked) they still don't even remotely capture the coolness of the characters they are trying to emulate.

Long story short, unless the team makes a massive paradigm shift in terms of what is possible in games with cel shading, 3D probably won't look as good as 2D. However, if Capcom manage to produce a Rival Schools and not an EX3, I'll still play it - I mean that's really what matters.

you create your own characters, choose a fighting style then travel around the world, looking to challenge people or save people out of sticky situations with your superior fighting skills. Every fight moulds your player in some way - you would get visible scars and so on.

I like your way of thinking (I thought this was what that Virtual Fighter online game was going to be). You can still bring out SF4 with predifined characters, but there is no reason why a fighter like you're suggesting can't and shouldn't be done, i'd love it. I've always wanted a game that Chambers of Shaolin's system started. I wish people like you DID work at Capcom, so they can do what people want (SF4) AND new franchises that would be exciting. I like the idea of games like new Outrun and Sega Rally + new ideas like Test Drive Unlimited pushing the boundries. A fighter like you're suggesting in an online world would be fantastic and excite me more that SF4 would (don't get me wrong, i am very much looking forward to this).

I crave the truly new.

Looking at the trailer i'd be really happy if the game looked *exactly* like it does in that trailer. (Without the slow motion). I know it's a stylised trailer but a game actually looking like that would be utterly amazing.

o/\o I just saw the trailler if the game looks like that count me in - if we end up with *another* 2D fighter then meh (and yes I am a fan of the series!)

My money is on it being; 3d, on a fixed plane of left / right movement with a camera that tracks in and out depending on how close the characters are.

It *could* be done in 2D, but to meet with modern expectations there would need to be a ridiculous number of frames drawn for each character. SF3 looked silky smooth at the time, but looking back there actually aren't that many frames per character (although there are more than Guilty Gear).

Most film / cartoon animation achieves smooth movement at 24fps; even this is more than a 2d game would bother with. If Capcom render in 3D, 60 fps is not a problem, if they go 2D the animation worlkload becomes a major overhead if they want it to look cutting edge.

Off topic, but I think the Udon sprites for the HD remix look terrible; the relatively low number of animation frames in SF2 will only compound the uglyness.

and until it releases I was so hyped for the HD SF2TX to drop anytime now, until I read this on magicbox

- Capcom announced the online puzzle game Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network will be delayed to 2008, the reason is to eliminate time lag in online multiplayer modes. The game will also include 16:9 widescreen support, high-res characters and remixed music.

Good if it eliminates the lag though. SF2 hyper fighting online, on 360, is hellish at times.

Oh the glory days of SF2 from the chippy to the bus station it was everywhere.

Be nice if it got the old community back together.

I often visit Japan and the scene out in Tokyo is amazing

Held my own on Turbo X and SF3 i a local game spot in Shibuya which was a surprise.

I even got a bow from my opponent

probably get butted over ere lol

I wasn't so fussed about the trailer as Street Fighter should be all about 2D. Good to see Ryu & Ken though.

This ^

If Capcom do ANYTHING 3D with this (apart from possibly the backgrounds, that would be the most acceptable thing from where I stand), there'll be a massive fucking :( from every fan who has respect for the Street Fighter series

.::: They can do with the graphics whatever they want, it's the game's mechanics that should remain rooted in 2D. I love sprites, but if they can get it to work with 3D graphics I wouldn't be complaining. It would open a world of possibilities.
