Got me a sega saturn model 1 with two official pads, an official multitap and 5 games - panzer dragoon, bug, sega rally 95, daytona and firestorm

everything but panzer dragoon worked as it had a rather nasty crack on it that looked like someone had stood on it with a high heel

so please recommend me do some top notch games for it and if anyone has a spare copy of panzer dragoon they would like to send my way......

Nights is an obvious choice, as would be Guardian Heroes, Fighters Megamix, Sega Rally too. Dpends what you're into, 2d gaming + RPG's is imo the consoles mainstay, with games like Panzer Saga, Shining Force 3, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Vampire Saviour and many many more besides!

I still love mine!

Make way for the Sega fanboy! :)

So this is what you do:

Play Sega Rally, sit in awe of the brilliant track design and know that however hard you try to beat your best time, there's always room for improvement. 4 tracks, 3 cars, no filler, or any half-arsed attempts to pad out the single player experience - that's the way arcade games should be, and it's pretty much the foundation of my rampaging Sega love.

NiGHTS is essential, for pretty much the same reasons. You could beat every level in less time than it takes for Oblivion to load, but the idea is going back, beating your best score and wallowing in the gorgeousness of it all. Not so gorgeous by today's standards obviously, but the game shouldn't be punished for the hardware's (many, many) shortcomings. It's probably the most imaginative and innovative game of it's time, and if you end up agreeing with me on that one, you'll actually give a shit about the Wii sequel - which may or may not be shit. :(

VIRTUA COP. You must play Virtua Cop. 1 or 2 will do, but 2's definitely the stand-out favourite for having so many luverly extras bolted on. I've yet to play a gun game as solid as this, and while you'd get a far better version on PS2...dunno, maybe you don't have one?

Panzer Dragoon Zwei. Probably the second-best looking Saturn game ever made, next to Panzer Dragoon Saga - which will cost you a fucking bomb to actually play. It's on-rails with multiple paths, but where the first game in the series suffered for that, this properly, properly benefits from it. Bosses are amazing, the levels are amazing, and the fuck-ton of secrets they packed in make it absolutely essential. You must play it.

Shit loads more, but those are my favourites.

Panzer Zwei, Guardian Heroes, Parodius, Xmen-COTA, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Exhumed/Duke Nukem/Quake*, Saturn Bomberman.

* I need to make this abundantly clear. Get Duke Nukem and Quake, create save files for each and bask in the almighty glory and splendour of multiplayer gaming that is DEATHTANK ZWEI! Seriously, put that multitap and those pads to good use by getting some friends round and shooting each other with little coloured squares on randomly generated terrain. I'm not kidding. Do it. Seriously. You'll thank me for it.

"HEY KIDS! IT'S TIME FOR A BLITZ ROUND!! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!"

Thank fuck you didn't put astal in that list.

Best saturn games are jap only, get yourself some sort of import enabler thingy and hit google for some good sites. Luckily (unlike other consoles) Jap software info is easy to find when it comes to saturn games. Here's a few to start on.

http://segagagadomain.com

http://www.segasaturn.co.uk <-- Still under construction but could be good.

Capcom's 2d games were absolutely fantastic on Saturn. Especially those which utilised the 4mb cartridge. (There's a 4mb cartridge + import enabler combined, should be about 15 quid on Ebay)

SF Alpha 2 and Zero 3

Marvel vs SF

Marvel Superheroes

Xmen vs SF

All were top notch. Avoid the PAL version of Xmen COTA though, Acclaim completely and utterly fu[/bcked it up (slow and huge borders).

And if you're feeling flush, you could always try and get Radiant Silvergun.

Yeah, but if you use an import cart instead of getting it switched doesn't it just run at 50hz with borders anyway?

Yeah, it does, best bet would be to get a JAP Saturn. For convience though, it's not a bad solution. Most of the Capcom games had speed selectors and most widescreen tellys will allow you to stretch the picture.

My switched Saturn is fucked, so it's what I've been forced into doing.

Yup. I got round it by buying a Jap Saturn and modding it to run CD-R's. Top that off with an Action Replay cart and it will run anything you throw at it.

Me switched saturn is one of my most prized material gaming posessions. When it gives up the ghost (10 years and counting!) I'll prolly have to buy a japanese one.

I'm currently using a V-Saturn. I had a Derby Stallion but it had to go to pay bills

I've owned four different models in total, and it's my favourite console of all time (NiGHTS being my favourite game of all time). Not sure why I told you that, really. Anyway, my faves include:

Quake

Guardian Heroes

Vampire Savior

X Men vs. Street Fighter

SF Zero III

Radiant Silvergun

In the Hunt

Marvel Super Heroes

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm on my 3rd Saturn. Own 2 PAL machines (1 dodgy, 1 working fine) and a white Japanese import.

Up until I got the import machine I used an AR cartridge for import gaming but I'm enjoying full screen shmups on my white machine now. Most PAL games play with no glitches on the white console at 60Hz when I use AR cartridge on that. The only thing is I'm dubious of overusing the AR cartridge as I've heard stories of it messing up the cartridge slot - can anyone confirm/deny these?

I also recommend the Parodius games on Saturn - Parodius Deluxe has the 1st two games (Da! and Fantastic Journey) - Oshaberi and Sexy Parodius are wonderful followups.
