Radiant Silvergun

FFVII

Folklore

Daytona USA

Steambot Chronicles

SF2

Were my original choices. Folklore can now piss off, as can SF2. My official top ten would be:

1. NiGHTS into Dreams

2. Radiant Silvergun

3. Ikaruga

4. Final Fantasy VII

5. Sonic 2 (Megadrive AND Mastersystem)

6. Rocket Knight Adventures

7. Ocarina of Time

8. Steambot Chronicles

9. Daytona USA

10. Eternal Champions

Some of these haven't been mentioned yet - but thoroughly deserve to be...

Grandia 1(Sat/PS1) and 2 (DC/PC/PS2) - have absolutely stunning music throughout...

- Such a beautiful song this one...

Battle

Guardian Heroes (Sat) - Really eclectic mix of rock, jazz, classical and a multitude of other styles - shouldn't work but it does...

Kameo (360) has a superb soundtrack also - if anything it's a bit TOO epic for the game..

Total Annihilation (PC)

Turtles in Time (SNES) - Love all the different variations around the main theme...

Tiny Toons (Snes)

Spook Mansion

Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn)

Rusty Ruin 1 - Richard Jacques, seems too chilled for a Sonic game, but it's such a great track..

Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)

Sona Mi Areru Ec Sancitu

Shenmue (DC)

Theme

Shenfa (vocal)

Lotus Esprit 2 (Amiga)

Just as a final point - though both seem to have been made by cherry picking different tracks from music portal sites - both Braid and Castle Crashers have fantastic soundtracks...

Little Big Adventure 2 and Final Fantasy VII

These games have more in common in my head than they should, probably. I'd get stupidly excited about games as a child, and, coupled with the fact I'd often have to wait quite some time to get my hands on a game I was desperate to play, I'd be literally shaking in front of my computer when the day came. First it was LBA2. I'd played the demo close to twenty times, and I'd explored every corner of that first island, hoping that it would somehow let me go a little further if I cheated it in some way! Finally I had the full thing.

The feeling as I watched the installation bar creeping along was borderline embarrassing. As the game itself kicked off and that FMV sequence and music began I was transfixed. I'd urge everyone to listen to that prologue music again, you could almost class it as soft post rock and its build up is great. Here.

As minor as it may seem, both games had superb installation screens and music. Final Fantasy VII had the song "Prelude", which brought very similar feelings and was a great way to kick off the adventure. I'd agree with the person above that a lot of the in game music isn't quite as good, though.
