Games Workshop, An Appreciation Thread

The strategy battle games system makes an excellent entry point into wargaming due to the low cost of an army and the familiarity of the range. A box of plastics, one or two characters and a couple blisters of elites is all you need. Which is why GW have relegated sbg to white dwarf updates only and introduced war of the ring.

And if GW wanted to support properly wotr they should have released more plastics of existing metals instead of made-up warhammeresque nonsense like Kârdush the Firecaller and not increased the prices by almost 25% within a couple of months of the rulebook's release.

a reliable one that I am not permitted to mention

Wasn't it always known the license would end? Why would GW continue to license it if there are no more films*?

* I realise the Hobbit will come out but haven't they already done the battle of five armies and the Perrys got on with Jackson not del Toro.

doubt they will be getting the hobbit licence

though heres hoping fantasy flight make a nice overly complicated boardgame

They are getting the Hobbit License, staff member told me so today. Also he's not heard anything about GW dropping the Lord of the Rings, citing that last year the LotR stuff out sold both 40k and Fantasy combined.

So.... yeah.... guess I'm gonna have to learn it after all... bugger.

my source is the manager of my local store

he seemed surprised to hear about the hobbit thing,

just reading some articles on dakka dakka, an interesting one on using marmite for weathering effects

you prime the model, then give a basecoat of metallic or whatever, paint on some marmite and then once thats dry paint over it, then stick it in soapy water and brush it with a toothbrush, seems to have quite nice results

Think they did do yeah, part of the rules for the big battles or something. Its not like Jackson isn't still involved with The Hobbit though so not having a relationship with del Toro would hardly be a setback.

Hmm, they're not bad at all! I've never been a great fan of tyranids though - always thought the idea behind them was actually better than the reality that was the models. Still, I can certainly see some potential with those figures in the bottom shot.

What are they then?

You've just described every Games Workshop product ever.

:P

I think GW do some fantastic things to be honest, but like everyone else there are some fairly poor models in the ranges too. Quite honestly, the amount of stuff they produce, it's probably very unrealistic for everything to be great.

Hell, if it wasn't for GW, I'd never have gone into the hobby all those years ago.

I believe they are warriors.

Me too. Except these days there are a lot of other excellent miniature ranges. If lotr is dropped I'll be moving on to flames of war and warmachine for my miniature needs. It's such a shame that rackham stopped the metal figures which I thought even surpassed GW's stuff and went for prepainted plastics.

We happened to walk past the GW shop in Oxford yesterday, and thought we'd pop in for a quick look on the way back to the car. God almighty we were there for over an hour, Dean and I painted models then he had a 'learners' battle and the guys there were just brilliant. Very nerdy, but brilliant. I have never known shop staff to live and breathe their product/game so much, the enthusiasm was quite stunning. They have recruited a young new fan into their cult now.

Be careful Sandra, it's like crack for young boys. It is expensive too although you can found places that discount their stuff online. (there is also eBay.)

On the plus side it will delay by several years later you having to worry about him getting girls pregnant.

Ah yes indeed the kits were bloody expensive, so eBay will be my first port of call. He's going to go every weekend to their shop led basic training too. I think he's fallen in love.

We've told him we will buy him the kits providing he makes proper space in his room for them otherwise they are going up the hoover!

welcome dean, welcome to the brotherhood

:)

Some of the kids in there were proper geeky, almost talking in their own strange Warhammer language.

edit/ what can you recommend for a noobie into the cult kit wise?

firstly, try and find an independent stockist as they can be much cheaper

the assault on black reach set is excellent value for what you get in it, two small armies as a start off point for a much larger force

GW also sell battleforces now, which are basically an army in a box for around £50

they never did that in my day eh

I think it might have been the £50 box of stuff he was most interested in. It seem to have everything in it, the paints, a book and the models. But they were not getting £50 out of me this side of Christmas that's for sure!

And cheers, we'll look into it in the NY.

that would be the assault on black reach set

I got mine for £30 so look around either online or I will see if I can get you one from here at he same price

there are no paints etc

just a space marine force, an orc force, the rulebooks, a starter campaign and templates and dice

it is a worthwhile hobby as it has a large craft element (making scenery and terrain etc) and also increases his social interaction

the painting is a hobby in itself

the most important part you can play is to encourage him with his painting to give him the confidence to improve. I was awful when I started out, and hopefuly I am now a little less awful
