Hmm, I'm tempted to take advantage of that and then use my miniatures from other armies to play it: I don't collect Space Marines or Tyranids, sadly. Or, in fact, more than one army per setting. Space Hulk played with a crack team of dark eldar incubi vs. night goblin hordes sounds oddly appealing... (or indeed, some black orcs wading through a mob of warriors of Minas Tirith).

Sadly (fortunately?) I literally can't afford to do so, as I have to fill up my Gondorian army. Fortunately GW have confirmed that while I will need some Grey Company/ranger of the North figures in the Grey Company formation, it can be bulked out with rangers of Middle-Earth - nevertheless I've over £100 worth of models left to fill the rest of my army up by September, plus I've already spent £60 this month on the rulebook and assorted metal figures for the army; this army building malarkey is expensive :(

On the plus side, I have 80 warriors of Minas Tirith painted now - only sixteen to go! Then I can add the finishing touches to the three knights I have left, paint 88 rangers (24 of Gondor, 24 of Ithilien, 40 Grey Company), and then finally - finally - I can paint my two Aragorns and my Faramir. And hope that I never have to put Faramir into a mounted unit. Oh, and then base everything. Hurray!

Space hulk arrived today, everything was new, will take a picture of it in action with my lego men and gogos. Spent ages finding them all suitable weapons and outfits but very pleased with the results. Went for the classic pirate theme.

If you are looking for figures, then I'd recommend trying to pick up a set of the Assault on Black Reach terminators, along with a box of Assault Termies - eBay is your best and cheapest bet. That should let you build wysiwyg models for all the Marines. If you did end up short a weapon, then I've probably got a spare or two in my bits box. You can usually pick up a horde of 2nd hand Genestealers for around a tenner, as well, as they've been in so many box sets over the years. Enjoy the game :)

Well, as of yesterday I'm past the half-way mark: 112 models painted, 107 to go. I'm getting there!

Current line-up (plus twenty four archers at the back, of which sixteen painted, none of which I'll be using, and minus two knights of Dol Amroth who are painted but not yet pinned to their bases):

WOTR%252520Gondorian%252520army%252520090711.JPG

(click through for a bigger, but still low quality image. Apologies for the low quality of the picture - I was loath to remove them from their cabinet, so had to take the shot with limited light and one-handed as I held the door open)

Displayed are ten companies of Warriors of Minas Tirith, three companies of Rangers of Gondor and three companies of Knights of Dol Amroth, plus what would amount to three companies of archers, if they were actually ranked up. Only sixteen more warriors to go and that'll be all twelve companies completed - then everything left will be rangers of varying descriptions, and characters.

You army is looking most impressive!

I've managed to paint one figure to a reasonable standard the past couple of weeks :( (been reading volume 3 of song of fire and ice). A predominantly black scheme is easy enough but not very interesting and I'll be rethinking what to do with my rangers. My inability to settle on a particular colour scheme is partly why it takes me so long.

I've been lurking this thread for the last week and it brought back a lot of old memories from my youth. Since my Parents have thrown out my Space Hulk and Deathwing games I decided to start afresh. Today I went to the GW in Swansea and had a nice chat with a helpful sales assistant. I've decided to go into 40'000 and as per his advice I bought the Assault on Black Reach. I'll go back on payday to get the paints. It seems like a good introduction and i have a base of army, be it Orcs or Space Marines.

Now I just need to find people over the age of 16 to play with. I was old enough to be the father of most of the kids in there today.

Don't suppose there are any Swansea based players here?

Just started my second ever army, a 2,000 point Tyranid list. As the army is for friendly play, I've gone for what I think are cool models to make and paint, rather than a particular theme. I only get to battle once in a blue moon with my brother and our next game is scheduled in for January so I've got about 5 months to buy, build and paint 136 models...

The list is:

HQ:

1 Tyranid Prime

Elites:

2 Zoanthropes

1 Deathleaper

Troops:

5 Warriors

5 Warriors

8 Genestealers + Broodlord

28 Hormaguants

28 Hormaguants

20 Termegants

Fast Attack:

5 Raveners

15 Gargoyles

15 Gargoyles

Heavy Support:

1 Trygon Prime

1 Trygon

I'm hoping to use this thread for motivation to keep me going as otherwise I'm going to get to the other side of Christmas with 130 models still to do.

Ha, yes, motivation is key! Personally, I find it easiest to start with the massed grunts, as it leaves me the more interesting figures to do last of all. Of course, that can backfire if you're playing a 1500 point, 219 model Gondorian army, and doing the easy grunts first still leaves a 40-man legendary formation to do at the end. Turns out that having to do 40 models to a decent standard is, er, not plain sailing. Particularly when you discover that you're no good at making grey cloaks look not-shit without spending a good deal of time on them, and can't really get away with painting the Grey Company any other colour

I've got a pretty quick scheme that I decided on before taking the plunge on that kind of size army - Prime, Red Foundation, Purple Wash, Bone areas painted yellow and then topped off with a sepia wash. Paint the base with green foundation and apply grass. I reckon I can get a tabletop standard gaunt done in around 45 minutes from sprue to finish (with drying times in between obviously).

I've got a battleforce and another box of gaunts to start with, so I am going to get a pile of the small beasts done first. Hoping to have half a squad of gaunts (14 models) done by the end of next weekend - I'll try to remember to post a picture of what I've got done then.

Not quite in Swansea... but Carmarthen.

I'm similar to yourself, old memories and this thread have inspired me to pick GW stuff up again. I've started throwing together a Imperial Guard Army (Cadian Battleforce! = Lots of painting ahead!). I may dabble in a Black Templar or Space Wolves army too. Not sure when I'll play a game though... pondering whether wait for the 6th Edition before learning the rules! :omg:

I've made what I think is a pretty good start (after spending all of the evenings and the weekend last week on them) on the army. I've finished 20 Gaunts, 5 Gargoyles and a Warrior - but all of the photos I keep taking come out looking really bad. Has anyone got any advice on how to take good modelling photos - otherwise I'll have to post the horrific ones that I've managed to take so far.

Best posting a few pics first so people can see what might be bad about them. Is it the lighting? blurryness?

Also anyone that doesn't know about it:

I've been experimenting with one of the yellows a bit to try getting my space marines at least basecoated. Not tried any of the shading stuff as I was a little concerned about hearing that it varnishes too and I don't shade at the end but I did find the tutorial videos amusing for painting guides.

So in the last week I've been reading and re-reading the 40k rulebook and tentatively looking at what army I will go for. Last Thursday I went to the local GW and played two games, one with the trainee manager, which I won and a second against a player who was fielding an army much better than the one I was given to play with, I lost this by some margin. Playing the game was great fun and I seemed to pick it up pretty well and the rulebook has made a lot more sense this week.

I've decided to go for a Grey Knight army, and I'm going to pick up the beginnings of it on Friday.

Army painter sprays are pretty good and I love the little basing tufts they do. As for your vanish problem with the dips, get some GW satin finish spray (think they call it hard coat) it'll take the shine right off.

I think bcofn meant that his issue is that he prefers to shade before detailing the models, but because the quickshade also varnishes, he won't be able to effectively detail the models once it's done - as, presumably, painting on top of varnish isn't a brilliant plan. I could be misreading his post, though.

Devlan Mud, Devlan Mud, Devlan Mud. Did I mention Devlan Mud? Army Painter Colour Primers are fantastic (although I still prefer GW's Black & White) but ignore Quickshade unless you're wanting to do regimented units. In fairness, you can highlight over Quickshade - they've been steadily refining it over the years, but there's something similar I'm sure I may have mentioned...

(Or use Gryphonne Sepia for a softer tone).

I've jsut read my brother's latest White Dwarf (I'm not allowed to buy it anymore) and it's got me thinking: do you think GW ight be returning to printing army lists in WD instead of producing Codexes / army books? They always used to, way back when I started playing 40K (iirc, the first Imperial Guard amry list was in WD 109) so mayb they will start printing some of the more iche army lists to sell mre copies? Just a thought...

It's a nice idea but as a means to sell more copies I don't think it'll work because all White Dwarf articles are put up on the website where anyone can access them for free.

I have heard though that they are planning on returning White Dwarf to its glory days of being something more than a glorified catalogue.

Wiper/bcofn/somerandom, are these lotr figures of any use to you?

ok94ar.jpg

They were ballast in a ebay deal and are no use to me (I didn't really like the look the films went with so however nice the models are they're not going to inspire me). I don't think they're worth relisting since I think they're all from the weekly collectomag? Either way I rather they went for nowt to good home. :)

EDIT: There is also a horse

EDIT2: don't look in its mouth!!! :omg:

Unfortunately it will just be the dreadnaught that you can use in the Grey Knights army, assuming of course you want it to all look proper and correct. I don't think people would have any complaints if you used the stuff from Assault on Black Reach for a few games as count as models.

I've almost finished my first squad of space marines in over fifteen years.

6074049405_53af81c550_b.jpg

It's been quite an effort as I had to rework almost my entire approach to painting so different they are to what I usually paint. But a worthwhile effort I think and I'm looking forward to painting the remaining 25 marines.
