Wiper/bcofn/somerandom, are these lotr figures of any use to you?

ok94ar.jpg

They were ballast in a ebay deal and are no use to me (I didn't really like the look the films went with so however nice the models are they're not going to inspire me). I don't think they're worth relisting since I think they're all from the weekly collectomag? Either way I rather they went for nowt to good home. :)

EDIT: There is also a horse

EDIT2: don't look in its mouth!!! :omg:

Ooh, I would be happy to take Gimli and Legolas off your hands - I'd quite like to be able to have them up on display with Aragorn as the Three Hunters. That said, they aren't essential to my army, so if anyone else has a more pressing need for them favour them instead :)

I do quite like the idea of collecting an elf army once my Gondorians are done, so I wouldn't say no to those figures either, but again, I'll defer to anybody who actually already collects elves.

Whatever happens - it's very good of you to offer like this. I will, of course, cover cost of postage and packaging, should any models end up coming to me :)

Don't worry about the postage, it won't come to much, and I don't want to faff with sending them to the four corners of the kingdom so you can have the lot :D I think you post by far the most lotr in here (and very nice painting it is too). Pm me your address old bean.

They look pretty epic, are you going to do anything with the bases?

Yup. I'm going for a martianesque desert look for the base as I wanted something a bit different from the usual snow base that's used for space wolves and I have some weathering pigments to play with:

Best posting a few pics first so people can see what might be bad about them. Is it the lighting? blurryness?

Below are a set of photos of the first set of Nids that I've finished. I hope they are decent enough, the only one that seemed to come out well was the one of the gargoyle on it's own, but I'm not sure what I've done differently. Anyone with an expert eye able to help?

Cocky, those Marines are amazing - I'm really looking forwards to seeing all 40 when they are done.

That's a nice start on the 'Nids - they look impressive all set up like that. Did you use Army Painter dip on them? A tiny bit of Bleached Bone streaked as a highlight on the carapace would probably just finish them off nicely, although I'm sure the better painters here could give you more advice.

For an army and a horde one at that you ar e doing the right thing. You have an ideal base to add some extra details to later. If you want to create a little more definition try drybrushing a highlight with a large flat brush. I would also suggest maybe adding an extra colour or two so that trhe different units can be identified easier or even inverting the colours for an elite unit.

No, I didn't use the dip - it's just a base of Mechrite Red, washed with Leviathan Purple. The armour is then done with a base of Iyanden Darksun washed with Gryphonne Sepia. The bases get a coat of Orkhide Shade, followed by some PVA and the GW basing grass.

Cocky, any suggestions of couloring to drybrush with - I've got enough models to do a test piece to see what improvement it gives and how long it takes. I'm being mindful of the time as to get my army done by the deadline I have to finish on average 6 models a week. I'm hoping I can keep this pace up

Depending on how much colouration the wash provided you could simply use the base colour for the drybrush. If you want more contrast I think tallarn flesh could work for the red parts and bleach bone for the rest. I would at first start with a very gentle drybrush to gauge the effect until you have more confidence with the technique and maybe focus on parts such as the face and weapons/claws that you want to draw attention to. You can always use a dilute wash afterwards to smooth the colours.

And a handy hint for mass painting - use a hairdryer to dry the paint quicker (being careful not to melt the figures!)

I think i'll cry if you drybrush them :P

But then again these are the reasons I don't have an army painted <sigh> :(

I did put these in G+ a little while ago but forgot to post them in here:

Also i've magnetized the bases

Also, thanks for the offer of the LotR figures but it's not actually a game I ever played. I even managed to avoid learning the rules in a year and a half of working for GW.

Yeah, those are fantastic elves. And I'm deeply jealous of your freehand there. Just gorgeous, I'd love to see your high elves on the table at my local, rather than the unpainted armies I tend to see :(

These new ogre kingdom models look pretty sweet. Sure the designs are ridiculously over the top and if I were to play the game I'd need to spend maybe £200-300 for a decent army but gw get a thumbs up from me for their big fuckoff chariot mounted cannon. If I had the time and money I'd buy some of these right now for the fun of it. Instead I think I'll start saving for the Chaos space marines coming out next year. Just need to decide between a night lords or alpha legion warband.

Due to being far busier this past month+, my progress has been slow. Too slow. The spreadsheet I made to keep track of where I am isn't a pretty sight:

post-409-081638900 1314487514_thumb.png

On the plus side, I finally worked out how to make passable-looking grey cloaks at speed, so at least the Grey Company should be ready in time. I've taken a shot of the ones that are mostly painted (a few need their boots and helmets doing, most need belts/straps/scabbards/quivers done, but that might have to be left undone until after Games Day). Halbarad (with the flag) and Aragorn (standing on the rock) are finished, though. Although, unfortunately, Aragorn's sword went from metallic to opaque after varnishing - too much matte varnish, I guess. Click through for the full-sized image - which came out pretty well, by my standards - they're almost in focus ;)

They aren't perfect, but I'm happy enough with the way they've all turned out.

Oh, it turns out one of my close up shots, for once, actually came out in focus. Observe the world's worst basing on Aragorn (which, in its defence, looks a lot better from above, and when not zoomed in on with a camera), and the results of speedy cloak painting (based on a Uniform Grey ArmyPainter primer; detailing with GW Codex Grey and a Codex Grey/Adeptus Battlegrey mix for the highlights and shading, respectively; then giving a liberal wash with Badab Black):

Your army is coming along nicely!

I finished off my first space wolf squad today. This was not the most technical painting I've ever done with parts of the miniatures receiving little more than a basecoat. But I think I achieved the gritty, battleworn look I was going for.

I promised myself I'd stop buying on ebay until I deal with my selling backlog - I have amaong other things 15 bloodbowl teams to shift, worried if I list them all at once I'll be seriously flooding the market :) - but this: was too good to resist. My very own Bloodthirster :D

This should go in the Bargains thread - a Bloodthirster and an Avatar for less than £6. Git ;)

You know what folks, I always thought I'd come back to Tau eventually :P . I had the sudden urge to do a swamp scene. I also had the urge to cut legs off a figure and have it wading through the murk! Now, I was going to use a Tau firewarrior for the scene, but when I was rummaging through my grey mountain, I couldn't for the life of me find any torsos!

However, I did find an awful lot of Kroot! So, Kroot it is :)

Everything's just 'placed' at the moment - there's obviously a lot of work to do! - so ignore the floating Kroot for now, and the odd metal spikes and everything else. With a bit of luck it'll pan out okay in the end!
