Yeah, I've done very little to mine. I got the pupils in the right place and then put it the fuck down!

Another nearly finished Dominion guy. I got a bit exhausted by the banner, the reverse of which is still barely base coated, and the front of which needs tidying before I attempt to edge highlight the lot. No dry brushing to save me here!

 

 

It’s tempting to push on and finish some more of these, but I shouldn’t even be looking at all this half finished stuff until I’ve finished the Coven Throne.

I’ve taken a little break from the Coven Throne (not least because the guy hasn’t paid me or replied to my last two messages), to practice painting tiny white dots in tiny black pupils in tiny white eyeballs.

 

This guy is my best so far. His left eye (with the scars) is pretty much perfect, his right eye is a bit smudgy, but the effect works:

 

 

This guy is pretty good, the white highlight could have been a bit higher maybe, but again it works:

 

 

And this guy’s right eye is good, but his left went wrong when I tried to enlarge the pupil and cut in with flesh tone under the eyelid (losing the black outline).

 

 

He will go straight into the pot of paint stripper for another try. I don’t know why I didn’t strip stuff until now, it kinda takes the pressure off as you can just have another go. It’s a revelation.

 

Talking of revelations, if any of you aren’t yet doing so btw, give magnifying glasses a go. I’ve been looking at faces I painted (and was happy with) a year ago, and the difference is remarkable. This is the same head (one on the right is before I tried to add the white dots):

 

 

I don’t know how anyone hits the target without magnifying glasses!

It's funny how it works like that, when I paint a model (Gaz in particular), at the half way stage I thought it looked utter ponk but suddenly it clicked and I was much happier with it.

It’s the larger Orruks I’m slightly intimidated by. They have a seemingly never ending array of trinkets and detail. Severed heads, hands, goblets, different materials etc, etc.

 

By contrast the larger Stormcast just have more of the usual armour and stone bases. If I hadn’t used all the bare faces I could then they’d be even quicker to do.

Was feeling a bit overwhelmed by the sheer amount of partially finished minis in my pile of shame the other night so I, er…started 4 new ones. It’s less insane than it sounds - sometimes I find picking a completely unpainted mini with a clear theme in mind and executing it over a couple of nights can provide a much needed injection of enthusiasm, and remind myself that finishing something doesn’t have to take weeks, or months.

 

Nighthaunt are particularly good for this I find - 4 Glaivewraith Stalkers down, another 12 to go

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I could probably push the contrast between the top and bottom of the cloaks more, but I was going for a more monochrome, moonlit look.

Do you guys use anything to ‘temporarily’ stick bits together. For example, I have Emperor’s Champion and don’t want to plastic glue his pack on before spraying; as I want to take it off to paint, but sure would be easier to spray stuck on. 
 

Also what plastic glue do you use? I have the citadel glue which flows like no one’s business and is quite hard to get a tiny dab where I want it without overspill.

I normally stick everything together and hope for the best and I use only superglue even for plastic models. When it comes to assembling small parts I put a blob of glue onto an old piece of blister plastic and then use a sculpting tool to apply the glue to the model.

If I’m being lazy? Blue tack on a lolly stick. But sometimes I’ll superglue a piece to a section of dowel or sprue, glued in turn to a spare base - superglue is brittle enough that you can just snap it off and clean up any residue with a scalpel before using plastic cement to weld it onto the model properly.

As for plastic cement, I was using Tamiya Extra thin but now I’m using Revell Contacta decanted into the empty Tamiya bottle. The brush applicator suits me.

The tattoo was an easy addition but gives the model a lot more personality which is something I want to add to my models.  This was another straightforward painting overall too, maybe 3-6 layers/edge highlights on each bit with some airbrushing at the end. Really does feel like all of the work I've put into this over the years is finally paying off.

I think the personality comes across very well, but also I think you sell texture in a very convincing way. I follow a lot of NMM painters on Instagram and I’ve noticed that in many cases all of their surfaces look like metal - skin, cloth, you name it. You’ve got a really convincing way of keeping these textures true to life.

One of the many things I've picked from from the incredibly talented Spanish lot is to vary the contrast across the different elements. I've developed a simple system for controlling the amount of contrast over an area and it takes away the uncertainty I used to have and is so far proving to be very effective. 

 

I haven't decided on next month's project. It was originally going to be continuing with my infinity army, but after seeing the painted models for the marvel zombicide game I really want to try out that bigchildcreative painting style. It's a classic illustrative method for lighting and to see it done on a miniature is incredible. Whilst I don't have their level of skill I think I do a decent job of it and am tempted to pick up the 2nd ed zombicide to have lots of models to practice on.

This is on my list to do and I’m a bit scared of it. 
I’ve decided to speed paint my sigmar army. I’ve so far this week got 25 models done* with 7 halfway and 25 at the base/shade/drybrush stage. 
 

once these are out of the way I’ve yndastra, 2 mounted hq models, a banner dude and 3 flying guys who will benefit from a bit more effort. 
 

*done - but I’m going to do a mass spray varnish and basing session at the end.

Little bits of plastic blister . Stick 'em on, then carefully ran some UV resin down 'em . It's a surprisingly quick and easy way to achieve a fun result...although sticking them where you want can be a little bit of a lottery

Looks awesome - very realistic.

 

I still want to do water/swamp on my base but I can't figure out a way to stop it running over the rim of the base.

uv resin in a bottle…the stuff’s magic!

 

Well, as long as you have a UV light to dry it that is.

A bulb in a lamp would do I expect. Or sunlight if I'm not in a hurry?

 

I think the issue though is that I'm trying to use the bevelled GW base. I think if I want a clean edge I need to use a base that's completely vertical. Otherwise I can't find anything to form a perfect barrier to stop the stuff I have running off (Vallejo Still Water).

Just buy a new base then! You can get straight edged laser cut mdf ones on eBay for pennies.

I’d have to carve the mini free of all the basing work I’ve already done, but I’ll take a look.

Just get one the same size then and  glue it on and then you’ll have a flat edge at the bottom to work with.
