Any suggestions for worker placement to move onto after Waterdeep, have tried concirdia once...

Alien Frontiers is fantastic, and is relatively inexpensive when compared to other worker placement games. It's light-to-medium in weight, a good match for someone who enjoyed Waterdeep IMO.

Our group also enjoys Viticulture, which isn't too heavy. Great theme too.

Anyone backing Rising Sun? Have recently gotten into mini painting (as well as board games), the models look great but the Japanese theme ain't really my jam. I imagine I will give it a miss. Wish I had been into the hobby when Sword & Sorcery was kickstarted as that is right up my street.

In case I can't restrain myself tomorrow, anyone have any recommendations for singleplayer boardgames (or boardgames that are singleplayerable)?

There's a good Facebook group for this actually.

The current hotness for solo games is One Deck Dungeon.

Should have played the demo before I bought the game. Not impressed!

It is super-complicated - after I bought it I did in fact sit in on someone else's demo and the guy playing it AND the guy demoing it were BOTH confused. It is also very harsh. I just played the easiest dungeon as a Paladin and was more or less fine until the final boss battle which seemed to require an insane amount of luck to even survive more than one round, let alone actually injuring the thing. There seems to me to be very little actual tactics or strategy. Most often your choices boil down to deciding whether to fight or flee; and then just assigning dice rolls to different target boxes. Most fundamentally the mechanics seem to have nothing to do with the theme, which makes it difficult to intuit any sort of strategy.

If I am missing something and if anyone on here has any advice etc, I would love to hear it.

If my wife divorces me over this I will be furious. I mean, at least if the game was half-decent...

I'm a big fan of solitaire games and there's some fantastic games out there. You can also grab any coop game and play it by controlling two characters (think Arkham horror or pandemic).

There's games where you play against the game itself, which would be something like Lord of the rings lcg and player counts scale the 'game'. So you can play with one deck or two (or more).

Some newer games are coming with 'bots' which control an opposing player. GMT have a line called COIN games which are 1-4 player. The non players are worked out with a flow chart and you play the game that way. You can actually play a 0 player game and have the bots flow charts control all four players :)

And then there's games designed just for solo play. Companies like Victory point specialise in this field and make some of my favourite games (the states of siege line for example).

I've just picked up Comancheria by GMT Which is a solitaire game based around native American Indian tribes. Rules are pretty heavy going though and it's not a cheap game.

Are you on boardgamegeek.com? The one player guild on their is really active and good for discussion and recommendations.

Do you have a link for that? As far as I can tell, there doesn't seem to be a way to search for a specific guild on BGG.

Ok, as long as some people have a vague grasp then you'll be fine.

There is so much going on and so much to remember that it's difficult to offer any solid advice really. The thing that I found difficult to get my head around at first is that in order to take any actions with fleets, you activate the system they are IN, not where they want to go. So activate a hex and then you do stuff with what's in it.

General tips:

Focus on objectives, victory points win the game.

Try not to get caught up in protracted battles until a couple of other players are already committed.

Build Planetary Defence Cannons on systems around your home world to provide a shield and put off anyone thinking about making a sneaky move for it. The tech that allows them to fire into adjacent hexes (can't remember it's name just now) is brilliant, and worth obtaining.

Research Sarween Tools and Enviro Compensators early, they really help with getting production going.

War Suns (Death Stars or War Nips as we call them in my group) are good, but a massive resource sink. Not really a game winner in my experience.

Prepare for the long haul! We usually play with four and that's a full day almost with experienced players. Bring strong coffee or energy drinks and try not to drink alcohol too early ;)

I'll see if I can think of anything else.

How are you selecting races?

*Edit* Fighter screens are ESSENTIAL in larger ship battles. You need loads of cheap fighters to soak the hits and let your bigger ships keep going.

Um...it's an all day thing and I think alcohol's involved. It may be the driving factor for some people (I'll be just driving :))

I think it's draw three, pick one for races (I expect most will focus on story rather than abilities)

So for getting a gaming group off the ground with some friends initially and now a good few others (every 2 weeks on a Wed evening @settlers in Hamilton if you're interested) I got a gift of a copy of Inis.

Have only had a chance so far to pop the pieces and have a peruse of the cards and rules but it's already won me over with the art style :) can't wait to get it to the table - anyone else played it yet?

This Mythos?

That is a blast from the past. I think I had a pack of those about twenty years ago...

Nah "Mythos Pack" is a mini expension scenario.

There's 6 of them in this campaign

Aww Mythos!  That's my favourite card game.  I have a nearly complete set of the starter edition and the first three expansion packs, all in card wallets in a lever arch file, and despite being comfortably old enough to order a pint, the plastic hasn't deteriorated and turned it into a glued together mess.

I really liked that you could play it like a race against the oppoenent but also try and hunt them down with the right card combination and get your allies to attack the other investigator.

If anyone has a spare Nyarlathotep card hit me up!

I got Mr. Jack Pocket "because this CD I want is £5 and I have to bring it up to £20 for free shipping".

This is developing into a habbit.

You've made an excellent choice though. Mr Jack Pocket is a great game!
