General chatter - discuss anything here

Considering buying Blood Rage. My group are all relatively new to board games and, so far, we particularly like games which make us hate each other. Anything that makes us rage at other players will be well received. Would Blood Rage fit this description and is the base game (without KS stuff) any good?

Our first game was Risk 2210 A.D., which we still like to play. Our games tend to run a little long and I would prefer something that is a bit shorter than this.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Absolutely. Blood Rage is the perfect game for screwing each other over. You can drop monsters on the board that kill off whole areas, and you can "hate draft" the cards to mess with each other's plans. Also highly recommended is the Game of Thrones board game. You have to sometimes cooperate with people against your enemies... Until you mercilessly stab them in the back.

Finally: Kremlin. A brilliant game of deception and throwing each other under the bus as you try to successfully get your chosen candidate to wave to the people three times without mysteriously dying.

I kind of disagree about blood rage, despite the name and theme, it's quite sedate, everyone is just playing for points and it doesn't feel very personal.

My favorites that involve hating/betraying/lying/bluffing:

- cosmic encounter - alliances, special powers, card play, silly fun

- dead of winter - co-op like "walking dead" but there could be a betrayer, lots of mistrust

- Wiz War - Wizards fighting, silly spells card play, really funny

- Risk Europe - best version of risk (only up to 4 players though)

- game of thrones board game - quite a long game but so so worth it

- king of Tokyo - monster fighting yahtzee

- celestia - bit of light bluffing and betrayal, short game

- the resistance / secret hitler / one night werewolf / spyfall - quick playing social deduction games

If you want rage, fighting and stabbing each other (and then being friendly) can I suggestion Dogs of War

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cool-Mini-Not-Dogs-Board/dp/B00O841670

You're mercs trying to curry favor with various houses by helping them fight each other. But you end up fighting with/against other mercs - and alliances and loyalties change each round as you try to come out on top of the various match ups. Alliances and team ups can change rapidly from round to round...

I don't know about sedate, you're all supposed to be clans of vikings slaying each other and pillaging villages before everyone dies in glorious Ragnarok, that's pretty unsedate. Our group likes Blood Rage. It's a fun area-control game with chunky miniatures and plenty of interesting choices. We've not got any of the KS-exclusive stuff, just the five-player expansion.

Some other games for relative newbies looking to hate on each other:

Survive: Escape from Atlantis/Survive: Space Attack

An oldie but a goodie. You've all got dudes of varying value placed all over a sinking island/space station, and you've got to get them to safety. Everyone takes turns moving their dudes closer to the rescue points, then trying to screw over everyone else by getting their dudes eaten by monsters. Good length, not too pricy, widely available.

Cyclades

Quite similar to Blood Rage, but this time you're all ancient Greeks fighting for territory on a chain of small islands. Build armies and ships, and summon monsters by currying favour with the gods using a clever bidding system. Couple of good expansions if you like it and want to spice it up.

Arcadia Quest

One of those dungeon crawler games, with configurable map tiles and hacking and slashing and potions and stuff. If you like chucking dice and stabbing others in the back, it's not bad. What makes it different from other games of its ilk is that while most objectives will have you slaying monsters and picking up treasure, you'll never win unless you claim points for killing other players.

Skull

Everyone should own this game, and it'll turn up in a lot of my recommendation lists, but in this one its particularly apt. The perfect bluffing game for driving others up the wall. It's amazing.

Also: the Spartacus: Blood and Sand board game is literally about being dicks to your rivals. There is a card called Spread Cheeks Wide.

Heard about that one, it's on my list and loved the TV show.

Thanks for all the suggestions lads, think we'll give Blood Rage ago, I've started to paint miniatures so will be good for that too.

Cosmic encounter looks fun too. Mate is looking to get Dead of Winter. We have GoT, Secret Hitler and One Night already; Hitler and One Night are great craic and get pretty noisy.

Hadn't heard of this one before, looks right up my street and bloody annoying!

I think I'm starting to become a little obsessed with Gloomhaven. I'm thinking about it now at work when I'm not playing it and thinking about how I want to improve my character's abilities. It's odd because it is a different medium, but I saw a review comparing the feeling of playing it to the first time playing World of Warcraft back in its heyday. It's quite apt.

God I love it.

Anyone doing anything for International Tabletop day? I don't know if it is intentional or how it fell but I'm joining a group in a pub from noon to potentially 11 on Saturday. Hoping to play Great Western Trail for the first time and potentially Revolution railroads again.

@Mortis or anyone else.

I'm looking for a board game for my daughter - she is nine next week.

She likes Ticket to Ride, Tsuro, King of Tokyo (played once).

I was looking at Forbidden Island and it says 10+.

That wont be a problem for her but I need a game her seven year old (just) brother can play. Is Firbidden Island suitable?

Blimey, my 5 and a half year old twins have trouble grasping a game of Snap at the moment! :)

The one game we do sit and play with them is 'Roll For It' which they really love, but I might have to start thinking about introducing them to something a bit deeper.

Forbidden Island should be fine for a seven year old.

I play 7 wonders with my 7 year old and was surprised at how easy she picked it up. Duel is good too and easier to grasp.

Carcassonne is one of my favourite games to play with them as you can nearly always do something on your turn, even if you're behind in the scoring. If you add in the princess expansion it turns it into a completely different game where you just screw each other over. In that expansion it introduces a dragon which eats your meeples. They love drawing that tile and eating my meeples :( I wouldn't play that expansion if I wanted a proper game as it's too random for me, but they love it.

Can you guys recommend me some YouTube board game reviewers? I understand there are a lot. Preferably ones which go into some of the specifics of why they rate/do not rate the game, where the reviews are no longer than 15-20mins. Would prefer British based but USA would be fine (as long as they're not super irratating!).

The site you're looking for is Shut Up & Sit Down. The only boardgame reviews and news site where I'll watch the videos even if I'm not interested in the game.

Tom Vasel is also very good if you want an overview and reliable opinion on a game. On the surface he epitomises the stereotypical boardgame reviewer nerd (fat white guy in a comedy shirt explains the rules whilst holding the cards up to an unfocused camera) but he has a real gift for public speaking and is ridiculously knowledgeable.

Shout out for Secret Cabal podcast, really enjoyable bunch of lads to listen to. They will be doing YouTube videos soon too, following their successful Kickstarter.
