The new Leeds store is a vast improvement on the old one. It's not new as such, it's that they've bought the shop next door and knocked the wall down, so it's now luxuriously spacious.

Also went into Geek Retreat with my son, which is just across the road from Travelling Man. I've never been to a gaming cafe before so didn't know what to expect. It was pretty good actually –  the board games are free to play as long as you've bought food or drink, and they had a reasonable selection.

 

We gave Unlock: Mystery Adventures a try, and had an enjoyable hour playing through the House on the Hill scenario, with coffee and cake.

Met up with some school friends yesterday who have all been getting into board games to varying degrees, felt a little out of my depth tbh at times but they were good at making me feel included. We played Forgotten Island which felt very much like a children’s version of Pandemic as you try to shore up sections of a slowly flooding island and collect four elemental items before getting to da chopper. Was fun and a nice game to ease us into the session. Burgle Bros followed which I really enjoyed, great heist game where you sneak around a few floors of a tower block trying to find the safes to crack while evading the security guards. Highly recommend that and will be picking it up myself to play with the family. We had a quick go at Lovecraft Letter, the Cthulhu version of Love Letter card game, it was ok but I prefer the purity/simplicity of the original. Finally we tried an escape room game called Exit something or other which was a one use type thing as you cut up, wrote on and folded the clues. We had to call it a day before finishing but probably wouldn’t bother with one of those again.

 

So yeah, board games are ace!

What's the best way to package and post boardgames?

 

I'm going to be having a clear out soon and will be advertising stuff on here for sale. But what's the best way to package a variety of different sized boardgames? And what's the easiest or most cost-effective way of posting them out?

Box of closest size and some bubble wrap if you want it to get there undamaged. Postage wise hermes is usually the cheapest unless the game is really heavy. I usually check with the buyer that they have no issues and always take insurance - I’ve lost one board game to a Hermes driver in the past but did get refunded after about 6 weeks and the buyer was ok waiting till it got resolved luckily.

To that I would also add that it’s worth using bit of bubblewrap inside the game box itself, to avoid bits rattling around and possibly getting damaged.

How do you get hold of boxes just a bit bigger than a board game, then? I work in retail so I can get a load from work but a lot of of boardgames are a really odd shape. Look at something like Ticket to Ride which is a fairly typical boardgame box, it's very squat and flat. The vast majority of cardboard boxes that I've seen that could accommodate that are much, much taller. You could easily pack in two or three.

 

Are there any flat packed boxes people can recommend purchasing? Or is it reasonable to just take a larger box and cut it down a bit?

I just usually end up cutting a larger box down, and it works OK.

Yeah cut the corners of a bigger box is my usual tactic.

Aye I've sold a few games with bubble wrap, brown wrapping paper and myhermes. Never had a problem, even had a compliment from someone how well wrapped it was. I bought my bubble wrap and brown paper from Wilko, seems super cheap and good quality from there.

 

I'll probably list a few games for sale too in the upcoming days/weeks, do we have a thread in this sub-forum or do folks just use the Trading folder?

So has anyone here played Arkwright - I was quite intrigued by the SU&SD review but obviously chucking £60 at a fairly dry, economic euro with a play time in the region of 5 hours for the full fat version isn’t something I would do lightly. 

 Our gaming group doesn’t mind a heavy game but I don’t know if this is just a step too far into “spreadsheet - the game”.

£64 since I missed it in stock at games quest but I’ve sold a few games at the Tabletop Scotland bring and buy so it’s been purchased - hope it’s as good as the reviews seem to say.

Cracking weekend at Tabletop Scotland. Organisers did a great job. Our team also won the board game pub quiz which was nice. Got a chance to play Root, and thought that was excellent and had a great play trough of Legends Untold on a 3800 quid geeknson.

 

the game library was *superb* - easily the best one I’ve ever seen.

All games are over 2kg in weight so postage will be up to £8 (I use collect plus and wrap in bubble wrap and brown paper) so I'd like £5 towards postage.

Yeah was a superb weekend - played loads of stuff from the library that was on my “to play” list. 

 Did well selling at the bring and buy on Saturday - shifted a few of my lesser played games and gave me enough to pick up a few other titles later.

I've played it once and liked it. It is a fairly dry economic euro, as you say, but within that category I wouldn't have said it's that heavy. Although obviously that term means different things to different people. There are other things I'd rather play. Lacerda stuff is denser and I'd prefer that. And the new versions of Brass I enjoyed more on the subject of economic euros about the industrial revolution.

 

I'd happily play it again though.

Haven’t played but ordered on the strength of that review - I’m really enjoying Ganz Schon Clever and it’s been a big hit with my group so a roll and write that we can all play will be great. 

 In other news I’m officially rubbish at every game I’ve taught my 6 yr old - she whipped me at Qwirkle 229 to 214  and yes I know there’s an illegal placement in there - worst thing is - I think it was me that did it so I’m beaten by even more

Ganz Schön Clever is great — I’ve been playing the iOS version to death.

I've pre-ordered Welcome To...*, I think that may be my first non-Kickstarter board pre-order!  Something excited me about the whole Roll (Flip) and Write concept, not got anything like that in my extensive collection.  I might get Ganz Schön Clever (disappointing attempt to pronounce that on the SUSD review) too, I think actual dice might enhance the experience, and I love the Germans.

Anyone know of a decent £ marked set of poker chips that I could buy to replace the paper money in Arkwright? I know it’s going to end up in a state and it’ll annoy me  would have to be more muted palette wise as well as I’d like it to fit the look of the game as best as possible. 

 Obviously a set of the clays from the new version of brass would have been ideal but they aren’t cheap

Board Game Extras do a set of wooden chips, although I wouldn't call them muted and they don't specify a currency, if that matters:

The nice thing though is that they'll sell you parts of the set, so if you just wanted 1s and 5s that would be possible.
