This is the new handheld coming out next year thats been developed by a few key members of the gp2x community. I'm not sure so final the aesthetics and design of the console are but the hardware is all finalized from what Ive heard and its quite powerful.

kind of like an eee for gaming, but smaller and a little bit cheaper.

theres some more confirmed information here

official website with dodgy render here

Gah! It has a 'Select' button.

A sure-fire sign that a developer hasn't thought things through properly in this day and age. Have you ever 'selected' anything with the select button. Of course not. Does it serve any continuous purpose or even clearly denote what it's typical function should be. Nopers. I hate select buttons, they simply serve to say "look, we chucked this thing on here because we remember seeing it on other things and haven't stopped to consider if it's actually of any use or properly implemented". More useless than a 'big-head mode'.

Strawp, what is your sig all about?

Yep, it's basically a pyramid except your only investment is your email address. It's completely legit, but you do turn yourself into a whore doing it. It goes like this:

1. Follow the link and register on the site

2. Pick an affiliate to register with (go for LoveFilm)

3. Register with a membership scheme like the 2 week free trial

4. Get 12 people to follow your referral link.

5. Get sent the thing you signed up for.

6. Cancel your subscription at no cost if you like (I might keep it though - I know lots of people who love LoveFilm)

I've switched from the 32 inch HDTV which required 25 referrals to the surround sound kit which only requires 12. I've got just under 200 people on my Facebook list - I reckon I can do this...

I know you're skint, murray! Do eet!

True, however most people are going to just use this thing to play old 16 bit stuff, so it does serve a purpose.

If this ever actually gets released I'll be utterly astonished. If it's actually made to half decent standards it would be bollock eating time.

Much as I'd love them to actually make a success of it those mockups don't breed too much confidence!

They have had dev units for a few months now so it already exists, they just need the design sorted. They are taking on board a lot of suggestions on it as well, which could eitehr be a good thing or bad I'm not too sure at the moment.

I wouldn't be surprised if the release date slipped till a bit later in the year but it will be released.

I don't think it looks as bad as some of you are making out. It looks better than the original DS for a start. Could do with bulking up a bit actually. Go for the PC Engine LT look.

The thing is unless it somehow has the NGPC microswitched controls and a PSP beating screen in a case that would survive a direct nuclear impact, I'd find something to complain about it. A more serious concern is the processor, which isn't up to running Android (I reckon - for the techie types iirc Android requires ARM 11 instructions). Were it able to it would be one hell of a device.

Nope, sorry I'd buy it like that <_<

It's got a keyboard because that's the direction the GP series has gone in. The last gen was basically a linux PMP and I expect with the addition of a keyboard they're going to be putting messaging / browsing ability - whatever really. I'd get it because I'd finally have a pocket device that can run an SSH client properly that isn't trying to also be a rubbish phone.

And then I'd play SNES mariokart on it.

A good hardware keyboard is essential for the full Spectrum emulator experience and that's all this is essentially. The ultimate emulator handheld. Have you ever tried playing a text adventure on a virtual keyboard? It 'aint pretty.

I predict massive failure on a scale that means only sad cunts and smelly twats with beards will purchase such a device.

:(

Right then, fucker - I'm going to bloody well grow a beard now. It's going to take bloody months but it'll be worth it just so I can go "HEAR, LOOK AT ME, I'M A SMELLY CUNT WITH A BEARD AND I WOULD LIKE A SMALL GAMING DEVICE WITH A KEYBOARD PLEASE MR SHOPKEEPER, YOU FUCK"

And then I would see the look on your face and you'd be all like

I don't think it'll need to be a massive mainstream success to make these guys a profit. It's a small company that's targeting a very specific section of the gaming market. The section that bought a GP32 and then a GP2X. The sort that hacks a PSP so they can install a C64 emulator and play Buggy Boy. If they don't over produce they should be fine. They seem to be starting from where Gamepark left off but while Gamepark wanted to make an open machine they could also sell real games on it looks like this device is all about the community coding.

I'm quietly optimistic but we'll see. It'd certainly be nice if they pull it off. A C64/Spectrum with hardware keyboard in my pocket? Yes please. Looking at the specs we know so far it would probably have no trouble emulating any of the 16bit consoles. Fully portable SNES anyone?

A handheld designed for emulating the speccy & C64, I predict sales ohhhh well into the tens, shit even twenties...

Don't get me wrong I'm a retro emu nut, but this is pure 100% fail.

What? The machine hardly needs to outsell the DS Lite for it to be deemed a success, and the associated community has essentially accepted it as the successor to the GP/GPH handhelds, which must have sold well enough for their distributors to consider this venture viable.

I'm with Strawp on this, Linux + Keyboard + Old games = Good times.
