Most people seemed to like the scoring so they will stay for now.

If anyone has any other film suggestions post in the thread and I will update the first post.

Black = Terrestrial and Freeview : Blue = Pay for Channels (e.g. Sky Movies)

Film of the Week

The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) - C4 Friday @ 6.20am

Ideal family fare from the great Hayao Miyazaki. Whilst not a Studio Ghibli picture (it was made before the studio came into being) it has all the directors hallmarks of adventure. In fact it is possibly his most fun movie to date and one of his most accessible. Well worth getting up early for (or at least setting it for record).

It is an average made for TV movie that did well because Americans love to watch stuff about our royals.

You're probably right in a commercial sense, doesn't explain why I enjoyed it, which is simply that I liked the dialogue, particularly betweeen the queen and her family.

It is about a Serbian woman that marries an American but she believes that if she is touched she will turn into a panther and kill. It is a really good thriller and the synopsis doesn't really do it justice and nor does the slightly iffy 80s remake starring Malcolm McDowell.

Some of the ones I'll be watching/recording:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) - BBC2 9.25pm ***

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004) - BBC2 11.05pm ****

I haven't seen Hitchhiker's since it was out in the cinema. It was disappointing that some of my favourite lines from the book/TV series were removed, and the new plot elements weren't very good, but other than that I liked it.

I haven't seen The Life Aquatic, but I really liked The Royal Tenenbaums.

Monday (Christmas Eve)

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) - BBC1 2.45pm ***

I think my mum wants to watch this (she did when it was released in cinemas, anyway...)

Tuesday (Christmas Day)

Finding Nemo (2003) - BBC1 3.10pm ****

Haven't seen it since it came out, but I remember it being amazing (and IIRC I liked it more than Monsters Inc, which you've given 5* and which I only saw for the first time when it was shown last Christmas).

Being shown immediately after a Pixar film will really highlight how inferior Shrek 2 is, although I do think it's worth a bit more than the one star you've given it.

Wednesday (Boxing Day)

Porco Rosso (1992) - C4 6.05am ****

Thursday

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) - C4 6.35am *****

Friday

The Castle of Cagliostro (1979) - C4 6.20am *****

Nausicaa is the only one of these I've seen. Recording them on C4 at that time will probably mean catching a lot of kids' toy adverts too though.

When I first watched Monsters Inc it was actually one of my least favourite Pixar movies but I do believe it is the one that is most rewatchable and rewarding.

I'm sure many people would agree with you on the last point but I really do hate the Shrek franchise with a passion.

Might have to tape The Straight Story as it's one of the only Lynch films i have yet to watch. Also need to see The Motorcycle Diaries.

Both are fantastic. The latter is especially beautiful.

The Radio Times gave The Life Aquatic three stars today. Dicks.

*wonders if that was a radiohead riff in the title sequence of Hitch-hikers Guide*

It's the Eagles' "Journey of the Sorcerer".

I watched the Hitchhiker's Guide film this evening. Its flaws were a lot more apparent to me than they were in the cinema - there are some great bits in the film, and the production design is great, but the jokes aren't executed as well as in all the other versions of the story. It often seems as if the film is rushing through everything by rote, with no variation in the pacing to let things register.

Not as good as I remembered. :)

A shame it didnt do well at the box office as we wont get a sequel.
