Quite a mix of styles on this Pharoah Sanders album but Astral Travelling, Morning Prayer and the title track are lovely.

I brought Jewels of Thought a few months back, and like it, apart from the jazz yodelling. Is there a Sanders album that is yodel free, or is it common across all his work?

Yodelling, Leon Thomas’ vocalese, circular breathing and overblowing to the point his sax screeches like a tea kettle are key elements in Sanders’ ouevre. I think Africa just has chanting and is for me one of his best albums, including the definitive version of You’ve Got to Have Freedom. Love is Everywhere is played quite straight too and is a masterpiece.

For yodel trainspotters Love Will Find a Way features plenty of it, but done by Norman Connors. That’s Pharoah going full jazz funk and it’s a fun album.

I had a proper sit down no distractions listen to In A Silent Way the other day for the first time in years. This isn't going to be news to anyone but it's such a masterpiece, and to this day it still sounds like quite nothing else to me - "fusion" really doesn't do justice to what's going on. There's so many musicians and layers and yet it's so elegant and cohesive - those warm woozy organ droning bass notes in the title track and the tinkling electric piano and guitar flourishes and all the space that's there, and then Davis coming in with crystal beauty on the trumpet. Music doesn't get any better.

It astounds me that the whole thing was recorded in one day in a single session.

It’s been my favourite for years. I love everything bout it. It is understated and amazing at the same time.

Edit: If yiu haven’t listened to it I really recommend the Complete Sessions. Some of this stuff was released elsewhere but I find this collection sublime:

Thanks for that. It's not one I'm familiar with, but really enjoying it. Will definitely pick it up.

No probs - glad you like it.
Will see what else I come across later in the week. It’s bloody fantastic getting the vinyl out again - I’ve waited years..
