Here's a break down of the monthly NPDs starting from November 2006, which I have stolen from some other rubbish forum, so you can see those small spikes in action...

For anyone having trouble following that, just use this key:

Wii = Playstation 2 + hot cakes

Playstation 3 = Xbox 1

Xbox 360 = Xbox 1 + a little extra

Bungie will never leave Microsoft

Rare will never leave Nintendo

Sega will never leave the hardware business

Things change.

Bungie and Rare didn't have the gazillions of dollars that Sony has made from the PS1 and PS2.

Sega had to make a ten year loss in money before it decided to quit the hardware business.

Things do change but only every two generations or so when it comes to hardware companies.

EDIT: never mind then, northy and Harsin have just proven me quite wrong. :(

You've seen the third party Wii sales figures?

Depends on the games you're talking about really. If you take a look on the high profile third party games for the hardcore such as NMH and Zack and Wiki than you have a point. But it's not a coincidence that something like Guitar Hero 3 sold the most units on the Wii.

So that's why they've had their credit rating decimated in recent years, are laying off staff and can't afford a PS3 price cut.

Apparently Sony have made a bigger loss on the PS3 already than the total profit they made on the PS2.

http://www.joystiq.com/2008/08/19/the-sony...ss-ps2-profits/

According to DFC intelligence figures cited by Dave Perry, Sony has lost more money on the PlayStation 3 hardware than it made on the PlayStation 2 during its five most popular years. In pure numbers speak it's lost $3 billion on the PS3, which is about equivalent to everything it made selling PS2s during its peak years. This story would actually have a lot more impact if Carl Sagan was around to say "beelyuns."

Things ain't so rosey for MS either!

In all fairness, the article goes on to explain that Microsoft lost $4 billion on the original Xbox, and has had to spend over $1 billion replacing faulty hardware in the 360 and extending the warranty for original purchasers. So, we tend to think $5 billion trumps $3 billion. The real winner in this struggle? Nintendo. It has been churning a profit on that little Wii since it hopped out of the gate. Rassin' frassin' wand-wagglin' profiteers.

This is the reason we probably won't see a large-scale price-cut for a while.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/games...ing260oneveryps

According to The Guardian (as of May this year) each PS3 was selling for an official loss of $130 (£87), but they reckon that the real figure could really be as high as $260 (£174!).

Components and what not will have dropped since the time of that article, but it's still going to take them a long time to be able to afford to drop the price down towards Wii and 360 type levels.

But not enough to make a profit?

Not according to all these sources saying they are making a loss on every sale.

It's what happens when lots of cooks spoil the broth.

They were desperate to push Blu Ray and install it into their next console. The HD war is worth $10 billion to the Blu Ray consortium so they wanted to get it into as many homes as possible - the PS3 was the Trojan Horse to do that.

The only problem is that it ramped up costs - and in these times of financial uncertainty this is not a good time or a good place for Sony to be in.

Doubt it.

It's underperforming seriously, but remember it's not that far behind the 360 all things considered.

If Sony gets into / is in a position where it cannot afford to continue supporting the PS3, the gap it's behind the 360 is irrelevant.

Some of the numbers over the last few pages, particularly the loss on the PS3 wiping out the PS2 profit from the 5 best years is quite mind boggling and you start to think maybe things are quite drastic.

Which makes selling your consoles as a loss sound even more ridiculous. I bet Iwata and co have had many a chuckle after work. I can see it now. Shigsy in Iwata's office after hours, Iwata opens a draw and pulls out two glasses and a bottle of scotch and they reminisce on old times and laugh at the current situation with Sony.

So, all you guys are saying "Oh yeah, the 360 is making a profit because all the gubbins inside is now so cheap because Microsoft have sold so many of the fucking wretched things (23million)" and you're also saying "Sony can't reduce the price of the PS3 because it hasn't sold enough of them (17million)". I know 6 million is a lot of things but, well, it's not THAT many. And the 360 is only outselling the PS3 SINCE the price drop, you know?

You know?

I'm just saying to say that the 360 is now making money and the PS3 is losing a shit load, even though the PS3 didn't have a failure rate of 30%, well, I mean, I'm not sure that all adds up.

If Micorsoft are making a profit on 360 hardware which let's not forget was BLEEDING EDGE not long ago, well, Nintendo must be making £200 or more on each £179 Wii sold.

I don't think that's exactly what is being said.

It's not a simple case of costs coming down automatically as you sell units. More that MS revisions has reduced the cost of producing the 360 far more than any cost saving revisions Sony has made to the PS3. The '6 million' gap doesn't factor at all in that.

Is there any possibility of the PS3 being discontinued? With the recession about to kick in and all?

I'd say there's a real possibility. They're hardly publishing any software, and the hardware isn't shifting. Third parties are already supporting the 360 and it won't be long til they drop PS3. There really will be very few reasons to own a PS3.

They can't use Blu-ray as a major selling point now that dedicated players are getting cheaper, and it will never get near DVD sales.

Sony's other businesses are suffering too right now and they're threatening to increase the prices of cameras and other consumer electronics. They're getting rid of staff...

PS3 is a massive drain on them.

Not true. The PS3 outsold the 360 in the first few months of the year when both the Wii and 360 were in short supply, and then again when MGS4 was released. This year was the first year when the PS3 actually outsold the 360 for a single month. So yeah, that's not really true.

That said, it's pretty much selling at GameCube rates, which isn't a disaster, but I don't think mainstream retailers will stick with it for much beyond the summer if things don't improve.

Yes true.

The 360 was in short supply!! Hohoho.

January, the PS3 outsold the 360 in the USA and therefore probably everywhere else on the planet

February the PS3 outsold the 360

March the 360 outsold the PS3 by 5,000 consoles in a month

April the 360 outsold the PS3 by 900 consoles in amonth

May the PS3 outsold the 360

June the PS3 outsold the 360

July the PS3 outsold the 360

August the 360 outsold the PS3 by 10,000 consoles

September, October and November has seen the 360 outsell the PS3. The 360 had its price reduced in September.

Now this is in America the only place apart from the UK where they like the 360.

So it's only in the last couple of months that the 360 has outsold the Ps3 to any significant degree. And in that time there's been a price drop and the 360's last big-hitter - Gears of War 2.

Don't get me wrong, the PS3 is doing shit, but let's not kid ourselves, the 360 is only doing marginally less shit.

Nintendo are the best.

Maybe Sony are working hard on a Performance Analyser to give PS3 games the kind of wow factor Gran Turismo had on the PS1!

This will lead to Microsoft releasing the 720 to keep up and it'll be a two horse race with the Wii HD and the 10 year plan of the PS3, as Microsoft struggle with the 720!!!"!"!"£

Don't give up hope PS3 people! What goes around comes around!1
