Why aren't SEGA making OutRun 3?

I'd pay a silly amount of money for a boxed set of arcade perfect Sega Rally, Virtua Racing and Outrun 2 - they should release the first two on Live Arcade / PSN - but Sega would be fools to pour money into another Outrun sequel on consoles.

I can't see how Sega could justify making an Outrun 3 to be honest. Enjoyable as it is, Outrun is a very limited, pure arcade game and surely a 3rd installment would just be more of the same but with a small graphical improvement.*

If they went crazy and tried adding realistic physics, GT-style 'garage' modes and all the other crap you get in todays racers then it just wouldn't be Outrun.

(*EDIT: Although I do realise this is EXACTLY what every other company does with their series' these days. Sega shouldn't be doing that.)

Yeah, get Digital Eclipse on the case!

(joke).

For the same reason we'll never see:

Shenmue 3,

New Jet Radio,

Skies of Arcadia 2

or any other good games, it's simple, Sega died with the Dreamcast.

But they released OutRun 2 after the Dreamcast died.

You know what they want to do: not charge TWO QUID for one go on their deluxe OR2SP cabinets (with the moving seats). Ace though they are, it must put people off. And OutRun is one of those games that's impossible to dislike when you actually play it and pull off a mad powerslide around the first bend. Cheapo 50p version and deluxe £1 version please!

Sega is still milking Outrun 2 in the arcades though, so it's been kind to them. I wouldn't be surprised to see a new Outrun arcade game, undoubtly followed by a home conversion.

I was thinking this too. Surely the money they'd make back from 360 / PS3 versions would at least pay for SUMO's time to convert them. If it's outsourced it's not taking up their internal resources and breaking even and getting a new Outrun on shelves must been good for maintaining brand image.

Exactly what I thought. I suppose they could turn it into a free-roamer such as the latest Burnout, but that didn't turn out so well did it?
